in reply to: long shots #48159
I know I am preaching to the choir here but I felt compelled to add…Whether its 700 yard rifle shots or 70 yard shots from bows, the animals deserve better than to take any risks. Long shots by any weapon, no matter how accurate, becomes far more risky than close shots. Its that simple. Our archery forefathers had to learn through trial and error. As archers we should be better and more disciplined than our predecessors because they taught us clearly what not to do. The best rifle hunters I have ever come across are cats that are such good hunters that they don’t have to take long shots. I really believe in my heart that I would rather be good/disciplined in my shot selection than lucky. Forget luck…Killing an animal humanely and honoring the challenge of that is far better than being lucky.
in reply to: Washington Elk… #47176I’ve hunted Washington back in 2009. It was an OTC late season either sex tag. It was a very tough hunt. Hunting Roosevelts in the thick timber was as hard of a hunt I have been on. That said, it was so much fun. I have spent time steelhead fishing on the Olympic Peninsula as well and I always saw elk in the river bottoms. My father and I are planning a return hunt next year. I have unfinished business with the burly Roosevelt Elk!

in reply to: First Black Widow!!! #13048I personally love my Black Widow bows. My father owns one of their last handcrafted MA’s and I plan on using it for a memorial hunt after Pop is no longer with us…Congrats on the bow, you won’t be disappointed.
in reply to: Some Game recipes… #13047I watched Rinella hunting the Brooks Range for Caribou last evening…He showed footage of cooking up some bone marrow and eating it…It was very interesting. Anybody else here eat the marrow?
in reply to: Less of Dave Petersen, please! #13042I think Dave forgets some of the Marine acumen…When one of the leaders speak, we had better listen…But seriously…He simply wants all of us on here to be more involved, share our opinions…I will step it up in 2013!

in reply to: The Election Buck #56439There is no such thing as justice in hunting…That said, Alex, you deserved this animal, his death was a gift to you. He will eat well, and you will never forget this experience, this death, this life…Well done brother, a fine whitetail buck killed ethically and humanely on the ground…Doesn’t get any better.

in reply to: Longbow by Jay Campbell…Interesting find #26389An update on Jay’s Book,Longbow, A Hunting Life. I read his book throughout elk season and I was really blown away by how great a book it is. Jay and Karen’s adventures with traditional bows are deeply personal and the book is full of adventure and life lessons. I loved it. I have an amazing collection of Traditional archery/bowhunting books. Longbow is an instant classic that belongs with the best of them…
in reply to: Backpacks for hauling meat… #19723Hope all you fine hunters have had wonderful adventures this hunting season. A couple of thoughts regarding packs that haul meat…My MR CrewCab and my father’s MR Longbow performed flawlessly recently packing out my bull. It took us two and a half trips. I made the mistake of keeping bones in my two back hams. I was concerned about the heat, so time was of the essence. Pop deboned both front shoulders, which cut weight down considerably. I carried out one back ham on the first trip out. Pop took care of the loins and other misc meat on his first trip. The next morning, I policed up the other back ham. Then went back and grabbed both deboned front shoulders. Pop carried the head on the final trip out. These packs can load 100 lbs of meat but that is too much weight for my skinny legs to handle…These packs are pricy but worth every penny when it comes to comfort and durability.
