Great write up Dave. I solicited myself to be on the working group for the working group for the CP&W bear management committee that was directed by the legislative committee that voted to postpone this bill, so that all stake holders have a voice in this. (If this working group ever comes to be)

The fact they tried to rush this bill through, without consulting the biologists and staff of the CP&W says a lot about the politicians intentions.

Dave, Appreciate your vigilance on this issue. I too have been bringing it up on another hunting blog and taking alot of criticism by the “corporate conservationists” that more and more “sportsmen” are aligning themselves with.

It is wearing me down having to continuously justify the need for the conservation of our public lands to fellow hunters, even though they claim to be their rallying cry when convenient. Yet when it comes to practicing it, they fall short.

I am fortunate to get great flight from same arrows for both bows. I would appreciate any expert reviews of my setup. I know arrow is light (400 grains), but I know the elk I have been blessed to take with complete pass thru’s were very concerned about it.

I use a standard bicycle inner tube from WalMart. You can get them in varying widths. Cut it to proper length, turn it inside out, and roll it up bottom limb, just like the commercially sold rubber grips. Use a wider mountain bike tube for recurve grip, and a narrow street bike tube for a longbow.

You can buy a performance tube that is thicker to provide more cushion to your hand. These you typically have to go to a bike store.

FYI, Easton came out with a new “Tribute” line of aluminums. They are 7075 alloy (XX75) , and low cost. A dozen shafts goes for $37 and some change on amazon. They are only available in 2016 and lighter. I just ordered a dozen. I’ll fletch them up and report back an a couple weeks.

Yes David, many problems with this bill as written. The lack of participation from the key Colorado sportsmen’s groups,the way it was brought forth without biological professional input, and the “carte blanche” wording would have been disastrous to public land hunters. I’m all for more hunting opportunity, when it’s done the right way within scientific boudaries, fair chase ethics, and with the resource in mind. This bill would have allowed the killing of a tremendous amount of bears, paticularly on private land, with the tags going to the highest bidder, at the expense of “average joe” hunters because of reduced opportunities in the archery and rifle public land seasons. The only potential positive is to move elk/deer off of private land in August if it were a very limited August season, but again the biologists would have to chime in to see what they believe what the effects would be on elk/deer movements. This bill accomplished non of that.

There are alot of other issues associated with an August bear season that need to be considered also….what are the effects on deer/elk movements, what about hunter/recreationalist conflicts ie. Harvesting bear in front of summer hikers ( we don’t need any more hunting closures like Brainard Lake…tag allocations. This bill came on too fast without proper consideration given to Colorado’s diverse and challenging outdoor community. I’m also concerned when conservation Is done legislatively instead of biologically ie legislation and ballot initiatives.
