A simple, and brilliant, visualization technique. One of those, “why have I never thought of that before?!?” ideas. Thanks, Jason.

I think you can. Recommended brace heights are just that – recommended. But I’ve sometimes found that a particular bow shoots best a little above or below that. I just wouldn’t wander too far out of that range.

Fletching tape, and a little dab of Goat Tuff (or Gold Tip glue) at either end of the feather should work just fine.

Case scissors?!? I had no idea. Any idea how old they are?

I hear ya. My neighbor with the basement range went and got married and became a dad in the process, and suddenly his basement isn’t available all that much for bad weather shooting anymore. As a result, I did a lot more shooting outside in the backyard as much as possible through the winter, which ultimately has been a good thing. It’s made me shoot a lot more in adverse conditions and at a bit longer ranges than the basement allows.

But now I’m really itching for the snow to melt enough to get out in the woods and rove!!!

Decided to put a leather grip on my Quick Styk this morning. Feels great, and I like the extra thickness:

In fact, I liked it so much I went ahead and put one on my Kanati as well:

                      T-Roy –

I think Steve is spot-on. From your description, I would guess that your nock broke upon release, essentially resulting in a dry fire, which is why the string parted. It can happen even if the string is in good condition. Glad it wasn’t worse!

You might want to get in touch with the San Diego Archers Club to hook up with some like-minded folks (they shoot @ the Rube Powell Archery Range). Like MoeBow says, there is a pretty active trad culture in SD.

I really hope you pull this off, E. It would be a very cool accomplishment.

One of my practice challenges is to shoot late in the afternoon with the sun blazing in the corner of my eye and my target in a shady spot. It can make it a tricky challenge to pick and focus on a spot.

That is good practice, Jim. When backyard shooting, I’ll also do things like balance on a small stump that’s just big enough for my feet and shoot, sit down and shoot around/through various obstacles, etc. Anything to break out of the, “perfect shot under perfect conditions with perfect target shooting positioning” which can easily become a habit with backyard shooting. My backyard range is oriented in a southerly direction and so it’s not uncommon that I’m facing into the sun when I’m shooting as well.

Thanks, folks. That crosswind was definitely making it interesting – if you look close, you can see my arrows kicking right a little (from the camera’s POV) as they get near the target.

And yeah, DWC – it’s always interesting to see your own shooting on video. I tend to think that I pause at anchor longer than I actually do.

                                Happy St. Pats!!
