in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #21478
Looked at some maps last night, and was thinking about where I’d hunted down there in the past. I’m thinking about basecamping somewhere around the Whetstone Mtns – lots of public land around there, and at least the last time I was there, we bumped into quite a few javis.
But I’m definitely open to any other suggestions, if someone knows of a better area.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #19531Got out for a nice stumpin’ session this morning.
Two well-exercised longbows, taking a rest:
in reply to: Little Blackie takes a dirt nap #17465Thanks – that’s great info, Dr. Ed. While of course individual results will differ, it’s this sort of information that helps inform our choices in an educated way.

Bruce, we are headed out that way fishing soon, how’s the run off?

Things are clearing up, but the creeks are still running high and strong – still a surprising amount of snow at higher elevations in the Tetons.
in reply to: Little Blackie takes a dirt nap #17352King – as I read back through this thread (and pick my jaw up off the floor after looking through the pics again) one thing jumps out at me – your arrow weight is just over the magic “650gr. bone-breaking” threshhold, but not by much. And yet the damage is obviously huge.
I’m assuming you’ve probably experimented with some arrow setups that are significantly heavier at some point, and I know that there are other variables to take into consideration as well, but I’m curious – did you find that the gains were negligible beyond 665 gr, and that there wasn’t much need for an arrow a lot heavier than that? That sure seems to be what the pics suggest…
Awesome “King” pic, btw.
in reply to: New bow to show off! #17289Sweet! That’s a beauty. I like the slim riser, and the stippled grip. What are the specs?
in reply to: What ya got goin? #17247Now that’s just good livin’ right there. Nice little vid, Cameron.
in reply to: Little Blackie takes a dirt nap #16032Holy cow – the devastation from that shot is unreal!
in reply to: What ya got goin? #15983cpbiv – I like it. Looking forward to hearing more once you get it all together and use it for a while. I used an ultraralight wood stove on a turkey hunt this spring, and man, it sure was nice on chilly mornings.
Cameron – if the video is hosted on YouTube, try just copying and pasting the “Share” link.
Tailfeather – looks like a fine trip! And I agree, there’s nothing like a good river trip. I’m due for one this fall – hopefully we’re going to float the Middle Fork of the Salmon in early Oct. which is a great time – hardly anyone on the river, fall colors, and lots of chukar…
in reply to: Little Blackie takes a dirt nap #15981One helluva hog, King. And a great story. Thanks for sharing the detail pics.
I can’t help but laugh thinking about what a 125 gr. head with 12% FOC, which is supposedly “all you need,” would have done on that bad boy… 🙄
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #15220I lived in Tucson for a couple years as well, back in the early 90’s. Great country around there and, same as you – I’ve bird hunted down there a bunch (mostly south of Tucson), and bumped into lots of javis along the way, but never hunted them.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #15137Interesting looking stove – how much does it break down? Weight? Love to hear a little more.
I got out yesterday for a hike across the state line into Wyoming with the mutts. It was a good stretch of the legs up a trail that isn’t maintained anymore, and doesn’t see much traffic at all.
There’s a trail here somewhere…
Up above 7500′ the wildflowers are still in full effect:
Seems like most of my hikes this time of year are a quest to get somewhere off the beaten track, ideally near some flowing water, and then find a good spot to pitch the hammock and enjoy the view:
I had a very tired shorthair by the time I got back to the truck.
Saw some big elk tracks, spooked something large above me that kicked boulders down uncomfortably close to us and found some old bear sign. But honestly, every time I saw a stump, all I could think of was “I wish I had my bow with me…”

Sounds like you should come meet us in Az – a little more of a drive, but it’s all on big pieces of public land, owned by you and me!
