in reply to: They are Really HERE!! #42329
Yes! Rumors of the wily beasts in the vicinity are true. In fact, from what I understand, they were transplanted to the Snake River Range a while back (they’re not native) and they’ve spread to the Tetons and are at risk of displacing the native Bighorns, who are having a hard enough time already.
I haven’t hunted WY for anything other than small game since the licenses have gotten so expensive for us non-residents – how much is a billy tag goin’ fer?

We were in southern Ca, on the edge of the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Some great country in there once you get off the beaten track – easy to forget that L.A. is only an hour and half away…
You’re farther north, aren’t you?

You know, Mike, I’ve suggested it, but she loves this one. I’ve tried to explain to her how wonderful it is to own multiple bows, but being for more intelligent and practical than yours truly, she’s not buying it. 😉
We got out again the day after Christmas for one more rove before hitting the road back to Idaho:
With smaller fletching, I bet this would have been a ‘complete pass-through:’
You don’t want any of these cones dropping on you…:
My best shot of the day – threadin’ the needle:
Is there anything better than wandering through the woods with a bow and a handful of arrows? Good for the soul, I tell you.
But now we’re back home and it’s currently 2F outside and the snow is knee-deep in the yard. Already looking forward to AZ…

It had bits of sticks and leaves still in the pockets when it arrived along with some subtle signs of wear.
Ha – nice. Hope they didn’t charge you extra for the foliage. 😉 I’ve gotten most of my best wool shirts off the Bay, for a fraction of the cost of a new one, and often better quality!
in reply to: Cold Weather Gloves #41180Glad to hear the AL glove is working for you, David. I found them to be quite toasty as well.

Thanks, David. I wore it while out stumping yesterday – it’s a perfect fit, and definitely a more dense, quality wool than a lot of the newer stuff.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #37869That is one very nice buck, Ralph. Glad to see you two are growing close! 😉
in reply to: What ya got goin? #36900My uncle, who first took me hunting as a kid, just gave me his old Woolrich hunting coat today. Of course, true to form, he just shrugged and said it didn’t fit him anymore, like it was no big deal – but it was a big deal. Not only is it a fine coat, but it has more hunting history woven into it than I could hope to equal in this lifetime. I’m truly honored to be its recipient.
in reply to: Merry Christmas bow hunters! #34138All the best to all of you over the holidays – you make this the best, most informative and most entertaining forum on the interwebs!
And the campfire won’t be the same without you, Jim. But we’ll save you a stump for your return, and maybe even sweep it off from time to time… 😉
in reply to: Neck Knife #33122In my experience, it’s a way of carry that may take a little getting used to, but I hardly even notice I’m wearing one anymore. It’s no more ‘jewelry’ than any other way of carrying, it’s just another option (and a less visible one). And no more hazardous than other ways of carrying, assuming you have the proper sheath/retention. I particularly like it when I want to carry a small fixed blade (which is most of the time), but don’t want to have a knife on my belt, for various reasons.
However, I only like small fixed blades this way – if it’s a full-sized knife, it either goes on my belt, in a pocket sheath in my coat, or in my pack.

Actually, David, I admire you for primarily shooting ONE bow! That takes a level of self-discipline I haven’t found yet. 😉
And Patrick – I’m afraid I’m not much help. Mine are simply on horizontal shelf hooks in the closet, where no one but myself can appreciate them.
in reply to: Wolves relisted #32795That jives with what I’ve seen in western states that have a wolf season as well – trapping far and away accounts for the majority of wolves taken. I think that very few people successfully hunt wolves, and of those, most are the random ‘lucky’ encounter when a hunter just happens to see one out in the open, and has a tag in his/her pocket. Without bait, and without the ability to run them down with motorized vehicles, wolves are an extremely difficult animal to spot and stalk.

What David said.
Fallguy – did you make that knife?

in reply to: Could this be the best knife sharpener ever? #31410My field knives are all convexed. The only sharpening gear I carry in the field is a small leather strop, pre-loaded with stropping compound.
Steel choice from the outset on field knives goes a long way toward what sort of sharpening supplies one has to carry (or even better – not carry) in the field.
You can also strop a fine edge on a pair of jeans, btw.
