Since when do you need an excuse for that?!? In fact, I’m going to run to the store and get some right now!! 😆
And mixing plaid and camo together, Alex?!?! Don’t you know you’re breaking article #127, Section 6, of the Trad Code?

Therefore without, without wantoness, and without cruelty, we shall hunt as long as the arm has strength, the eye glistens, and the heart throbs. Lead On!”

in reply to: You're stuck with me…. #54894Right on, Critch.
When I think of some of the “last, best places,” this forum is one of them. The rest are all far more remote. 😉

Haha…you must have been a fly on the wall at our pub the other night, David. I went off on a little satirical rant about “man clogs”…and I’ll leave it at that. 8)

I’m betting you regularly get carded at the liquor store, eh Bruce? 😆 Somehow I had you pictured as older, like most of the rest of the world it seems. Misery loves company.
“Mysterious BS” being the operative phrase, for sure. 8)
I’m 47, and yeah, I just got carded the other day.
in reply to: Good Reads #53755Thanks so much, David and Alex. Wordsmithing is right up there with bowhunting on the “short list” of my favorite things to do. I hope to be able to devote more time to it in the coming year.
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #53513John – that’s a very interesting knife. How long is it?
Dave – I actually knew nothing about Francis Chan when I came across that quote, but I liked it. Turns out he’s a Christian minister, with an interesting/atypical approach. If you Google him, you’ll find all kinds of info.

That looks like it could lead to even more of a headache than owning a German shorthair. 8)

Good to know for next year, compadre. 😉
2) .44
Yeah, it’s a bit of a beast to lug around, but definitely reassuring. Then again I just picked up a very light .38+P that is a joy to carry. Of course, I’ll probably end up packing both.
3) Stormy
Aye. Again, I’ll probably pack both. The beauty of car camping.
4) Yes on the Menudo.
The definition of “soul food” in my book.
5) Bird Dog
Yeah, I seriously debated this, as I’ve hunted quail in the area before and it can be quite good. But I think I might be spreading myself too thin. And, my dog needs daily vigorous excercise. Telling him to hang out while I go hunt javis for the day would not go over well. So I think I’m going to forego it this time. Besides, I’ve got a chukar hunt in western ID the weekend after I get back.
in reply to: Last minute Arizona advice for Bruce and I #49263Haha…this thread gave me a good chuckle this morning – thanks, folks.
Vance – a good set of tweezers is always in my first aid kit, but I’ve probably used them more on my southwest trips than anywhere else in the country!
Unfortunately Ralph, I had to swear off tequila a long time ago, after extensive ‘trial and error.’ 😉 I’m strictly a whiskey guy now.
Wojo – Bulleit is one of my “go to” whiskeys for sure. Although theses days I’m liking the Bulleit Rye even more. Sazerac makes a really nice rye as well…
Put the Meatheads on the KME yesterday and they are ridiculously sharp now. I love that sharpener.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #49248Cameron – I hope your travels go smoothly, and huge kudos to you for the work you are doing.
Fallguy – no kidding. By all accounts, there are few things nastier than a trapped wolverine! The trciky part is lifting the lid to get the tranquilizer needle on a pole inside the trap and to the target…
John – love to hear more and see some pics, of life in Nunavut when you get a chance. So are you planning on hunting musk ox in the coming year?
in reply to: What ya got goin? #48526Spent the afternoon helping a friend who is a biologist for IDFG with setting up a wolverine trap (so they can put a radio collar on it, and set it free again).
On the way in:
The trap. They haven’t baited the actual trap yet, but they are “pre-baiting” right now to draw wolverines into the area, and watch for sign. Ifd you look closely, you can see a deer leg wired to the trap above the door:
The trap will eventually have bait inside of it, on a wire connected to the big swing arm you see above the trap, which will slam the door closed.
Even so, there is often not a long window of time before a wolverine will chew/claw it’s way out. I’ve seen some pics of traps that they have escaped from, and it looks like someone tossed a grenade into the trap.
Hopefully, we’ll get a call to help out when they actually trap one…

Who you callin’ a “bandejo?” And while we’re at it, what the heck is a “bandejo” anyway?
Nevermind – Urban Dictionary to the rescue. I grew up speaking Spanish, and that’s still a new one for me.
in reply to: Last minute Arizona advice for Bruce and I #48289Things I’m continuing to ponder in preparation for this trip:
Rye or straight bourbon?
.38 or .44?
Stetson or Stormy?
Should I stop at my favorite hole in the wall in south Tucson and get a big pot of menudo for the first morning in camp?
