Recently we watched a NatGeo special on Wolverines, featuring Chadwick. A good watch. There’s also a great NatGeo called Snow Tigers, about Siberian tigers, featuring famed bowhunter Bart Schlayer.

Same with us, and happily. But thanks for the heads up on those two documentaries!

Thanks for the reminder – I’ve been meaning to read this for a while now.

There are grizz in the Wind Rivers, for sure, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them continuing to expand their range southward, though probably not in significant numbers, given the amount of development and backcountry traffic in the Front Range.

Oh, and on the topic of wolverines – I’m reading Doug Chadwick’s “The Wolverine Way” right now. Great read as well.

Ha! Excellent. And that was perfect bunny-chasin’ music. 🙂

I hear ya there. I fly when I absolutely have to for work and that’s it.

I’d really like to hit PBS and Kalamazoo as well, but I also need to “bank” time now, so that I’ll get less grief about it in the fall!

Wish I could, but I’m not going to be able to make it to PBS. I’m hoping to hit the BHA Rendezvous the first week of March, and unfortunately, I can’t take time off for both (+ Missoula is a lot closer for me). Hope to see you there.

So this begs the question in my mind – why do so many use 5″ – 5-1/2″ fletching, if it isn’t actually necessary with a well-tuned arrow and a decent amount of FOC? Is this just another one of those “tradition” things?

And, to take it a step further – in the case of bare shaft tuning advocates (a practice I’ll admit I still don’t buy into) – why would you bother to tune an arrow to fly well without fletching, and then finish the process by putting on more fletching than is required? Haven’t you just demonstrated that your arrow flies well without fletching? So why not just put on a minimal amount of fletching (3-4″) as the finishing touch, rather than 5″ or more?

And, as I think about this even more (probably too much), it seems like bareshaft tuning, followed by putting on more fletching than is actually needed, would further minimize the point of doing any bareshaft tuning in the first place, since the more fletching you add, the more you are changing the balance of the arrow….

In the end, why not just tune with the amount of fletching you actually intend to use? And why use more than needed?

                      Troy –

While I haven’t taken it to the extreme that you have, your efforts reinforce my experience. I really see no compelling reason not to go heavy for hunting, and lots of benefits to the things that matter – tuning, flight and penetration.

Of course, I approve of the name of this new arrow.

And it sounds like if you ever break a string or snap a limb, you can just throw the arrow at your quarry.

Are you shooting with an “open” grip? I find this also helps with rotating the forearm away from the path of the string.

I tend to gravitate toward things for which the process is at least, if not more, important then the ends. Fly fishing is like that for more me, and so is traditional archery. Both have given me a great excuse to go to amazing, remote and wild places, spend time in them, and learn. And at the end of the day, that’s really what it’s all about for me – lifelong learning and spending as much time as possible in wild places.

I also feel that in this day and age, the outdoors have come to be viewed too much as some sort of personal gymnasium. Climbing, mountain biking, skiing, even hiking at the pace that most people do it, has become too frenetic, too about the “person” rather than the “place.” I partake in these activities too, and I realize I’m making a sweeping generalization here for which there are lots of exceptions, but I think most of you get my point – the whole “push your limits, extreme, on the edge” culture that has come to define what so many view as being outdoors. Fewer and fewer people go into the outdoors simply to sit, listen and observe as quietly as possible. Bowhunting does this for me – so much so that it’s what I prefer to do even outside of hunting season, to simply hike out somewhere and sit and listen and watch.

I’m amazed at how much people miss, being so focused on moving fast and “pushing their limits” while traveling outdoors. The funny thing is that I think for a lot of people, having to sit quietly and observe for extended periods of time in the outdoors would probably “push their limits” more than anything. I have friends who simply can’t do it, and don’t understand why you would.

In addition, I’m a Sagittarius – we’re born to have a bow in our hands…

My favorite glue is tape. Adheres as well as glue, in my experience, and I can bang out a 1/2 dozen arrows way faster.
