Shhhh!! When you don’t live in a hippie state, you have to get creative…8)

Some of my best times have been stumping with friends. They have rules on 3-D courses you know.
Rules, eh? Shows you how much time I’ve ever spent on ‘official’ 3D courses. I just meant a place in the woods to set up a bunch of targets and have fun. Nothing against those who formally compete, but it’s not my interest.

South of Tucson, not far from Sonoita.

in reply to: Spring shoot #14729Looks like a blast! I really wish we had a 3D course somewhere nearby. One of these days I hope to have enough land to make a course of my own. But on the other hand, I’ve got more public land than I could walk in a lifetime, so the stumping is pretty much unlimited, so I can’t complain.

I had to do a classic SmithHammer gratuitous bow pic!!!
Very nice. And gratuitous bow pics are never actually gratuitous, in my totally gratuitous opinion…

in reply to: Tip on straightening wood shafts #14423Clay – I think that’s the best 40 seconds I’ve spent all week. 😉
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to run out right now and grab a 6-pack of “arrow straighteners”…

I’ll bring the Bourbon. 8)
Seconded! It would be a long trek from Idaho, but it would be awesome to rove all day and hang around the campfire at night with you guys.
in reply to: Shaking the Rust Off #14325Its true that there’s no substitute for shooting, but I have also seen noticeable improvements by having honed the muscle groups that I use to shoot in the first place.
I have a whole routine I do at least 3-4 times a week with resistance bands. I addition to using them for standard things like ‘curls’ you can also use them isolate certain muscle groups like rhomboids, delts, etc. There was a good article in TBM last year about using specific exercises w/ bands to help prevent shoulder injuries. If you can dig that up, it’s a good place to start. You can also find a ton of info about different ways to use bands with a Google search and/or on YouTube, which is what I did when I first starting using them, in order to put together a routine that works for you.
The other things I really like about using bands regularly is that they are cheap, and you can travel with them anywhere. I use these – for a number of different exercises, the handles on them are very useful:
in reply to: Two Tracks String Scallops #14242That’s too bad they aren’t working for you, Sean. I have to say, I’m amazed that any longbow would still be making noise with four silencers on it!? 😯 Regardless, silencers are yet another one of those things that seem to respond differently to different setups, and I don’t think there is any one magic solution. Sounds like you should stick with what was already working for you, and I’m happy to take those Scallops off your hands…:D
in reply to: Winter Rove #13362A few more pics from yesterday’s rove. After listening to the wolf carry on for a while, and watching the moose hightail it out of there (I’m always amazed at how they can cover ground when they want to), I decided to sit in that spot for a little while, just to see what might happen next. Sure enough, a few minutes later a half a dozen mulies ran past (you can see several of them under the big tree):
Elk had moved through there not too long ago as well:
Once the wildlife parade quieted down, I spent some more time bonding with the Primal Styk, whacking stumps and every other little target I could find. Though it initially required me to adjust some things about my form, I have to say that this is the most ‘intuitive’ style of bow I have ever shot. I know that probably sounds oxymoronic, but oh well – I can’t claim to always make sense to anyone other than myself…
Just a pic of my favorite hat, some sage brush and an old fence line…
And, as you can see in the above pic, the snow at lower elevations (7000′ ft.) is already largely gone. Crazy for us in mid-March. Upper-50’s and rain forecast for this weekend…:?

My wife and I both worked for an outdoor ed/skills school for many years, which allowed us to live in some pretty far-flung parts of the globe. When I was in Chile (for the better part of 5 years), I was way down south – mostly in Puerto Natales (near the Straight of Magellan) and a little north of there in the Aisén region. But I did travel up into the central part of the country on several occasions when I had a little vacation time – the area around Villarica is really nice. Great food and wine, and extremely nice people.
Paleo –
I didn’t grow up in Idaho – we moved here full-time about 9 years ago, after living most recently in the Yukon and Chile before that. But we’d both come and gone from this little corner of the state for some time prior, and had lots of friends that already lived here. It finally dawned on us that it had everything we wanted, including a great community of people we’d known for a long time. Neither of us has regretted that decision for s second.
