A Blind Horse ‘Camp Muk’ and a Boker Copperhead. The Muk is a fantastic skinning, food processing, general camp knife. Probably one of the most all-around useful knives I own. O1 carbon steel blade, micarta scales. I’m a sucker for ‘Nessmuk’ designs.

I am SUCH an idiot man….. As soon as I get off work I’m having another beer 😉
Ha! That reminds me of the Homer Simpson quote: “Beer, the cause and solution to all of life’s problems.”

X 2. Heavy, devastating on whatever they hit, and I’ve had no quality issues with them whatsoever.

Agreed. Very cool contributions, David (and everyone else).
Here is a Queen ‘Straight Jack’ that has been seeing a lot of pocket time lately. It’s a little shorter than I normally prefer in a pocket knife for daily carry – it’s 3-3/8″ and I normally prefer folders between 3.5″ & 4″ but it has a solid heftiness to it that makes it feel like a bigger knife than it is. Queen did a gorgeous job on the bone handles on this series. And their D2 steel takes a fantastic edge.
Oh, and the Wathen’s isn’t bad either….8)
in reply to: '59 Bear Kodiak replica #20097Thanks, Alex. I love that little K-Mag.
Despite what I said above about new Bear bows, I took a look at the new Kodiak you’re talking about – it’s definitely a great looking bow. I wonder if their higher-end, limited edition bows are still being built with more attention to detail? If so, that one would be hard to resist.

Great! We’ll see you there!

Bahaa…that is awesome. I wonder how many of those pics ended up getting called in to game mgmt. agencies.
Unless I find myself prematurely unemployed, I plan to pull the plug on a canvas wall tent and woodstove this year. I’m looking at models by Montana Canvas and Reliable.
I’ve gone back and forth on the traditional canvas tent, vs. an ultralight option like a Kifaru, but cost is about the same. You get a lot less weight/bulk, but they don’t retain heat like a canvas tent, and they are usually quite a bit smaller for the same amount of $$, in my experience. Besides, I’m mostly looking for something for basecamps in places I can drive to, or would be horsepacking it in.
If the plan comes together the way I hope, I’ll get the tent soon, and then find myself happily unemployed in time for September…:D

The chap that runs that store told me it’s great for al arrows but no good for carbon and wood 😉
With all due respect, the chap that runs the store doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Fletching tape works fine on carbon shafts. I lightly sand the aft end of the shaft with fine sandpaper, then wipe it clean with a little alcohol. Apply the feather w/tape, and then put a small dot of glue (I use Gold Tip glue, but others will work) to either end of the feather. It works great.
in reply to: '59 Bear Kodiak replica #19383A few pics of my ’70 K-Mag:
43 years old, and still a snappy, great-shootin’ bow. It will likely be my choice for turkeys this year.
But agreed – I wouldn’t buy a new Bear. Seen too many issues with them.
in reply to: from the home page #17245Same thing I use on my knife blades – a light coat of mineral oil.

in reply to: What's in a Name? #14384Easy. “Smithhammer” is my last name.
Which reminds me, one of my “bucket list” items is learning to blacksmith. I’ve always been fascinated by it, just haven’t found the time. And I figure I owe it to my ancestors. 😉
“Smithhammer Forge” does has a nice ring to it…

My favorite fletching glue is tape. 😉
in reply to: Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Rendezvous #13857in reply to: Hunting footwear #13172I often wear a pair of Danner Jackals. Decent ankle support, but lightweight, with a rubber compound on the sole that is designed to be quiet.
I’ve also snuck around in a pair of 5 Fingers. They are wicked quiet, but take some getting used to.
