in reply to: Robertson 'Quik Styk' Hybrid #32218
Finally had good enough weather (and time) to get outside and shoot this bow at longer distances. Whenever I’ve been shooting recurves for a while and switch to a longbow, it forces me to really focus on every part of my form and technique, which is a good thing. When I did my part, the Quick Styk performed beautifully and I shot some of the tightest groups I’ve shot in a while – in a crosswind, no less. I’m sold.
Here are a couple more pics:
in reply to: My Elkheart has arrived!! #32051It looks very similar to the “natural camo” limbs of my Kanati. When you look at the bow straight-on from a distance, it just vanishes. I don’t have the best picture of it, but you can sort of see it here:
My ‘Quick Styk” with high-grain contrast bocote limbs, has a similar effect. That’s why I’ve always liked natural limbs over solid glass.

Thanks, compadre. But I think we’re all lucky to live in this era with so many fantastic bowyers to choose from!
in reply to: My Elkheart has arrived!! #31912Nice, Alex! Looking forward to seeing more of this bow soon!

Ha. Yeah…hook, line and sinker. Again. 🙄
The most painful part is that it arrived at the PO on Sat morning, but we were on our way to Montana for a few days. So I raced over there as soon as they opened, brought it home, unpacked it, drooled over it, and then had to leave it behind without even shooting it once. I tried really hard not to think about it for the last 4 days…
Finally got back home tonight and threw about 50 arrows with it. The grip fits my hand beautifully. It’s the longest bow I own – I usually opt for at least several inches shorter, and a little more poundage. But that extra length and moderate weight make for a very sweet-drawing bow that I can shoot all day without thinking about it. And the name is not a misnomer – it’s a snappy shooter for sure. Tomorrow I’ll take it for a hike and put it more thoroughly through its paces, but all first impressions are that it’s a solid “11” out of 10.

I’ve been taking videos to critique myself. For those interested here’s a link to a 2 minute video I put together of my practice sessions:
I laughed just as hard the second time I watched it. However, I don’t mean to make light of the obvious challenges you’re facing with learning a new bow. My guess is that a little more “push/pull” would help a lot…

Alex – you can get heavy weight field points up to 300gr. on 3Rivers.

Ha. No kidding. We were “stretching out” pretty far on those shots. 😀

Nice looking bow. It peaked my interest so I went to Mr. Kendall’s website and found he his full up for 2013. Good to be busy.
Thanks. Jason makes a great hybrid, but I don’t think he makes a whole lot of them (which is good, ‘cuz I’d probably order another one…). For being 56″ inches, I’m impressed that there is no stack or pinch at all, and it flings a 620 gr. arrow with plenty of authority. After shooting my recurves exclusively for a while, it’s nice to go back to a bow that is so quiet and ridiculously light.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #21934We’ve just finally gotten to a point where some south-facing hillsides are free enough of snow to get out for the first stump shooting session of the season yesterday.
My buddy Kevin who just made the leap from compound to trad:
Those darn uphill shots…:(
This little Kanati has really been growing on my lately:
It felt great just to get out and stretch the legs with a bow again!
in reply to: New Bow in the house #21170Wow – that is a serious beauty all around, from the grip to the tips. It has a great shape to it as well. Well done!!

I practice to 35, would not shoot game past 20 — for the same reasons {especially -the all it takes is one quick step}.
Scout.
X 3.
I find that practice shooting out to 35 or so makes those 19-yard shots a lot easier.
