in reply to: Getting in shape #38304
If there are two things I’m really poor at, it’s sticking to a regimen, and working out for the sake of working out.
So instead I just try to do lots of stuff outdoors on a regular basis, year-round – hiking, mtn. biking, xc-skiing, etc. And I live at 6200′ which I think helps.

My main bow, the Shrew Classic Hunter is named SST, after Sweet Sticky Thing, an Ohio Players’ song I’ve re- recorded.
That’s most excellent. The Ohio Players were quite a band.
in reply to: So nice to visit the campfire… #37472Well, speaking of campfires and whiskey, I just installed a new fire ring in our backyard, and the better half and I christened it tonight with the first fire. A sweet, calm night watching the sun set behind the Big Hole mtns.
And you guys have just inspired me to pour a smidge of rye – cheers to you all!
in reply to: Hunting in grizzly country! #37454All of my elk, and a lot of my mule deer hunting happens in grizz country. The fact is never lost on me that when bowhunting, I’m basically doing everything the exact opposite of what is recommended – moving as quietly as possible, working the wind, etc. I simply try to always maintain a high degree of situational awareness, particularly in areas of limited visibility, and I keep the pepper spray handy. So far, that’s worked (knock on wood).
That said, few things put me on edge like hiking out in the dark, solo, in grizz country, at the end of a day of hunting. I’m always amazed at how bears can just materialize out of nowhere…
in reply to: Cottontails! #37169Thanks! Pretty sure they’ve done a number on my parent’s garden…
in reply to: Cottontails! #37020Well done!
Hmmm….I was thinking about visiting family in Cali next month. I heard that in some counties, they’re considering having open season on turkeys and/or pigs as well?
in reply to: So nice to visit the campfire… #36865Right on, Todd. It’s the best forum around, imo! And good to have you here.
in reply to: Helms Deep arrived today… #36069Alex – congrats on a sweet bow!! I’m really intrigued by the profile. Definitely let us know how it shoots once you’ve taken it for a walk.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #35632That’s it, Joe!
Oh, and the bar in the pic is @ Chico Hot Springs, north of Gardiner, MT. An old resort with a lot of history. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area. But don’t wait till then to have a Mule….:D
in reply to: Bear kodiak magnum brace hieght? #35629Mine seems to like 8-1/4″ with my 28″ draw, fwiw. But like Dave said, start at 8, and dial it up as needed till it feels, sounds, and shoots right.

Agreed, but now I’m curious – how many ladies’ shoes do you have?
in reply to: What ya got goin? #34507Took a drive through Yellowstone last weekend, on our way to meet up with friends in Paradise Valley. Traffic was horrible:
Our humble abode for 4 days:
Other than catching up, hitting the local hot springs, mtn. biking, doing a little fishing, and blasting clays, we enjoyed a profusion of ‘adult beverages.’
Bulleit Rye, a whiskey with enough character that we decided it needed a mustache:
More local residents:
The “Moscow Mule” – a specialty in these parts, served in a gen-u-wine copper mug (warning – it is very easy to drink a lot of these…):
Another view of the homestead:
And one very tired pup:
Not much to do with archery, but I figured if I threw in enough wildlife, it would qualify…

How was the finish and workmanship on the bow? I have long thought about a Robertson but haven’t seen one this far North.
Thanks! F&F are perfect. Not a flaw to be found. I would say that even if you can’t find one in the flesh to look at first, you can order with confidence (but of course, it’s always nice to shoot one first – so check out their “try out” program if you’re curious).

in reply to: Abell's instinctive shooting books – a question #32223After delving into “Advanced Instinctive Shooting” I would highly recommend it for anyone other than an absolute beginner (but they could jump to this right after reading and practicing the info in his first book). It is the best, most thorough exploration of instinctive form and technique that I have read, and I feel like I’m seeing improved results from some of the advice I’ve taken from it.
