in reply to: 1st time Colorado Elk hunting! #53602
When it comes to tents, sleeping bags and packs. Those are such an individual preference as to what works well, I would recommend try before you buy. I believe for some of this stuff if you have an REI store nearby they rent for weekends to test. Also, since a few have given you pointers of where to hunt, you can harness technology and scout some of that area with google earth to get a feel for the lay of the land. Once I pick an area I am confident I want to hunt the I get the 7.5minute maps from USGS and then put on those maps any property boundaries for private land and make notes for myself of what water holes look good for me to ty and scout or in your case to hunt when you get there.
in reply to: 1st time Colorado Elk hunting! #52478One thing I did not see mentioned was the importance of hydration. While you got a lot of great tips so far i would throw in make sure to take water with you and a way to filer water while there so you drink enough. Good luck where ever you go and be surprised if you get lucky on the first trip. I know a lot of people treat the first one as more of an adventure to scout and be prepared for the second trip.

if you are doing a little R&D then remember to to do the R&D on left handed bows too 🙂 FOr those who are loving your creations but never see a lefty pop out.
in reply to: long shots #48113I think what is happening as that as technology expands possibilities then you get shows on TV that support these long distance shots as being realistic. There was even a whole rifle hunting show a few years back that was dedicated to long distance hunting in the west. They even had a website where you could send in your scope and they would modify to work like theirs for long distance. SO I think once again while we preach to the choir on here about ethic shots and right decisions it is sometime hard to be heard above the din of multiple others on TV advocating and making look cool long distance hunting or unethical shots.
Wolf will not berate you at all but glad to know you worked to make the shot and were successful. I have shot long range rifle but have no interest in using it for hunting since it feels like there is no challenge.
in reply to: Washington Elk… #46135Alex;
there was a guy on here posting a while back about starting his own guide business slowly in Washington don’t remember his name but do a search on Washington hunting you might find it.
in reply to: Humidity in new shop (new bow pics added) #46132that is a tough one to reduce humidity. Could you put an old 55 gallon drum in there and run a fire to help dry the air? or too dangerous. How humid is the outside air right now? may have a hard getting lower than that inside your shop.
in reply to: Gettin' Out… #45919Cool pics Bruce, this is my favorite time of year to get out and tromp in the snow for a little fun.
in reply to: New Low in archery Hi Tech ! #44676And here is another one of the lows to add after all it seems the compounds are getting so short they have had to introduce a new device to eliminate the torquing problem.
in reply to: A comment on crossbows #44671I disagree with others who shrug their shoulders and say what are you going to do about it. I think we should take a vocal stand, after all we were able to push it back here in CO keep them out of archery season they are only allowed for disabled and that’s it, only allowed in regular firearm season. As I noticed here in CO and others have noticed is the NRA is one of the big ones pushing X-bows in hunting season which I find to be a very bad thing to the point I pulled any support I had for them. I also agree a lot with prairie prowler in that they will skew data and if we have in archery season long enough it will just take time but we will start to have rifle season advocates proposing to eliminate archery season if that happens.
in reply to: New Low in archery Hi Tech ! #41227Not surprised with either items being posted here after all the human brain is a either a dangerous cruel weapon or can also deliver great compassion and artistic beauty in other ways.
in reply to: New Robertson on the Way… #37518So stunning of a bow. The down side is the grip is on the wrong side. Otherwise I would suggest that it is to pretty for you to shoot and send to me so I could take care of it for you 😀
in reply to: My first glimpse of falconry #36089That is cool to see falconry. I have always thought that if I could not hunt with a bow I would then pick up falconry.
in reply to: What if …? #30317I agree with owing it to the animal but how often is that ethic taken to the back seat to get the result of a deer like Dave showed in his first picture.
in reply to: Glove vs. tab #29266For me I have always felts I feel the string better with a tab. The only downside is I have lost one while out hunting so I always keep a few spare around for that reason. Otherwise for my big fingers it was always hard to find a form fitting glove I liked.
in reply to: First Piggy #14758Steve cool looking pig how was the weather for the hunt? When I went to Kauai in Aug. it was so hot I could not think about hunting in the jungle.
