Great idea Mike! Longest shot (rifle) I made on a whitetail was just shy of 400 yards using that same principle. I try to vision that when I shoot my bow.

One should always practice in less than ideal conditions. “Train the way you fight, fight the way you train” is what my military bud always says. Lance Armstrong used to train in the crappiest of crappiest conditions for that reason.

Your “spare tuck key” is invaluable!! Probably one of the most important pieces of gear! When I hunt with a partner, he gets the spare, or I stash it somewhere close to the truck in a spot we both know.

I read a study on wolves on another local site by a fellow named Val Geist, not sure if I got his name right, apologies if I didn’t, but it was a really good read! Will post it if I can find it. It is about when wolves come into a habitated area ( people), how they work their way through the food sources, and eventually end up eating out of dumps, livestock and pets. A friend of mine who lives rurally in a neighboring province has noted just that, telling me she saw wolves eating a deer in front of her home! They have pets, livestock and kids.

I am looking forward to warmer temps and barefoot running, but one thing I will definitely miss is the the smell of various wood burning stoves I encounter along my route. Birch is awesome, pine reminds me of hunting camp!! Puts me in my happy place!

Google will answer that for you Mike. That’s how I found out, was going to post a link, but….! Lol

I’m lucky to have a friend (Ted Williams) who has a son who owns a maple grove and every few years, if I beg properly, I get a jug for xmas. While I don’t claim to own the experience in maple syrup that I do in whisky (and other good stuff), IMO the Mass variety is hands-down the best.

Of course, in the interest of self-education and fairness, if anyone reading this is from another maple syrup-producing area, U.S. or Canada, and wishes to argue that yours is better, just send me a pm and I’ll generously supply my mailing address so’s you can send along a sample. A guy can never get enough education in maple syrup, whisky … or all the other of life’s good stuff. 😀

Well Dave, I would gladly oblige you, but maple syrup here (Alberta) is like pope’s teeth on a whorehouse!

Last night’s run. -24C and windy! Yup, pretty sure it’s spring somewhere, no here though…

Sinawalli also mentioned the Exped pads, which are really nice. They up the “R” value even more by adding down into the mix. But, they are not cheap. No good quality pad is, in my experience. Comfort, durability and lightweight generally come at a cost.

Did forget to mention that they aren’t cheap! Mine was a Xmas gift. I have used it in some very cold winter camps, and found it awesome. A bit of a pain to inflate using the bag, and you have to make sure the valves are screwed tight.

I’m with Smith on this Dave! I have a Therma rest for many years now, and have beat the crap out of it. Still going strong. Slept a few times on gravel, to no avail. I also have a Downmat 9 DLX, expedition mat. Inflates about 2.5″ thick, has goose down insulation in it,carry bag is used to inflate it in cold temps, and rolls up like a dry bag and is waterproof. Can be stuff for a pillow as well.Weight isn’t real nasty.
