in reply to: Hunting in the heat! #47404
Yeah, no clear cut solution! Packing out after dark is a solution providing one has help. Country side is real tough trucking, and Mr. Griz is a real possibility. Oh well, guess I’ll have to load up the 45-70 and just get after it! God hates cowards!
in reply to: GPS Suggestions #45311I have a Garmin Gecko. It is very small, about 1.5″ wide and 3.5″ long. Very easy to carry. I usually mark my camp, and wherever I leave my Jeep. When it’s time to go back, I just use it to get a bearing back. I use my compass to follow said bearing. Make it a point to note direction of travel and landmarks before setting off.
in reply to: Asbell Anorak #45300I have the pullover with the separate hood. Like Doc Noc said it is real hard off and on! Mine literally fell apart the second time I wore it. Came apart at the seams. Was going to toss it out, but luckily a seamstress friend told me she could fix it. Been good to go since.

Ok for the last time my thoughts on this thread. The trackers are all I wear down to about 20F then to the camuks which are good to about -50F. http://www.mukluks.com
Yes pricey but mine are into their 8th year of almost daily wear–out there.
Well. your already a barefoot guy–but I shudder to think what the mountain guys will find when they give up those heavy pack boots for something that really works. With out the weight.
You know. I guess I have worn every boot made and humped more miles then I even want to remember all with sore feet. Trust me folks on this one I know–you DON’T need support for your feet or ankles–do your own research.8)
The old grunt who continues to learn:shock:
Good stuff Mike! Hard sell to those who don’t get it!
in reply to: Neck Knife #36310Personally I don’t like anything around my neck. I made one for my daughter and she likes it. Fixed blade goes in my pack and if I need a knife, my Emerson is forever in my pocket.
in reply to: Chek-Mate bows???? #36304I have a Beaver Creek long bow, and love it. Got mine back in 2011, and it took a long time! Was going to pull the pin, but the dealer I got it from assured me it would arrive soon. Wouldn’t want to deal with them now!
One thing about the Beans is that traction is marginal on wet grass, and really sucks in snow. Wore them last Nov. in a foothills hunt in deep snow. Had to change them out for my Danner Canadians. Steep hills were darn near impossible to negotiate.
Col. Mike, how are those Trackers?
in reply to: Cold Weather Gloves #7958Hmmm, cold fingers… Know a thing or 2 about that! I use my usual shooting glove under a pair of those ragg wool/thinsulate lined fingerless gloves that have the mitt flipped over with a small Velcro tab to hold it against the back of your hand. You can put a hand warmer in if you choose.

You should be able to get a light weight tarp, and just buy a grommet making kit. I’ve done that before with various tarps, and you can put the grommets exactly where you want them.
in reply to: Garbaging for Bears #29279Hmmm, sitting over top a rotten, stinking pile of garbage (bait), then shooting whatever comes into it? About as appealing as being boiled in oil!
in reply to: The Running Woodsman #20432Well I’m going to take your post literally, as I do run in the woods. As a bare foot runner, I constantly notice the temperature change in the ground from the different parts of the trail. I also notice the change in texture and smells. When the ground gets soft, I look track traps, just to see who is also in the neighborhood.
