For me, a stand has been more productive but it is more fun to get one on the ground. I have also shot bigger animals on the ground. This year, there were so many hunters around that my stands weren’t working. I finally decided to go have some fun. I got my pack and my bow and took off. I went about 3-4 miles keeping the wind in my favor. Right before dark I crept up on a herd of elk. There was a six point and a cow next to me. I couldn’t shoot the six point because I didn’t draw the trophy tag. So I shot the cow. It took most of the night to get it out to my truck with the waiting ice chest full of ice. But it was so satisfying. It tastes good too. Gary

I used to use brush buttons on my recurves. A couple years ago I had some loud noise when releasing the string. I couldn’t figure it out. Finally I tried taking off the brush buttons. The noise disappeared. Gary

Back in the seventies, my brother-in-law shot a doe mule deer. He had my sister with him and had her help lift the deer up on his shoulders after cleaning it. The deer slipped and his head went up inside of the ribcage. My sister heard a voice echoing “get this thing off of me”. Hahahaha, when he came back to the truck he had blood all over his head. Gary

Here’s where I got mine. They look just like cat whiskers and for a few bucks you can buy a lifetime supply. You cut them the length you want. Gary

I own a Rokon. I use it responsibly. I shot two elk last year and packed them out on my back. What’s funny, I also hate what atvs are doing in the backcountry.Gary

You could also add a thicker strike plate on your bow to gain some in the spine dept.Gary

I’ve been messing with them for a year now. You have to be very aggressive at first with a file until you get the bevel set. I use a curved tooth file. Then I just work them down with finer and finer grits until they are sharp. You have to keep your angles right or you will lose the sharpness. I have found several different ways to sharpen them that work. They are pretty hard steel. They also penetrate better than anything I have shot so far. I’m thinking about making a jig that holds them so I can use a table disc sander to make it easier. Then I want to get the paper sharpener wheel that fits on the grinder to finish. I think that would be the fastest way to get them sharp. Something else that helps on touch ups is ceramic sticks. Gary

I shot mine for a while and put it up for sale. I didn’t want to lose that much and no one wanted to pay more so I kept it. I shot it a bunch more and finally figured it out. It is very adjustable. Cut way past center so you can shoot all kinds of arrows out of it.I use a very thick strike plate. I was also going by what I was told to use as a brace height. I now shoot it at 7 1/2 inches and it is very stable. It is very efficient. I have not chronographed it but those arrows are moving. It is also very accurate. Very easy to shoot. I think there would be far fewer for sale if people learned how to shoot them. It is now my go to bow. I killed an elk with it this year. I bought another pair of limbs for it too. They came with limb savers on them. Ugliest things I ever saw. Since I raised my brace height and messed with my nock set to the point where it shoots right it is very quiet. I think the limbsavers were on there because they did the same thing I did at first, they just didn’t get it to the point where it was quiet. Before I got mine adjusted it was loud. I love mine now. I didn’t for a while though. I shoot mine like I do my recurves, with a straight wrist. It increases my draw length and seems to work better with this bow. Gary

I also carry two compasses. I had one break once. I use a GPS as a tool but it is not as reliable. I was once coming out of a canyon late at night and didn’t want to dig out the compass. I looked up at the north star and realized I had made a complete 180. That could have been a long night. Gary

Hi Dave, Nice to see you’re still at it. Thanks for the posts. I like lots of pictures. It is more fun to read stories with pictures. I guess that’s a hold over from when I was a kid. Gary

My main stumping head is a .357 maximum case with 7 1/2 shot to help weigh it down. They are longer and you can put more shot in it without it becoming too short. They are also very cheap, durable and do pretty good in the not lose your arrow dept. If I need more than that I pull out a broadhead. For small game I either use my stumping head or a MA-3. I almost exclusively shoot woods. Occasionally I play with aluminum and carbons. Gary
