in reply to: PSE Longbow? #33438
I can’t speak for PSE’s longbows, but I had a PSE Stalker recurve as a starter bow. The bow shot well for me, but about a month after getting it, I had to send the riser back, as the wood was beginng to separate. A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine had been shooting it and I noticed a spot in the center of the lower limb where the fiberglass had separated, so back to the bow shop again. The manager said that with all the bows they’ve had blow up in the past few months, he was getting tired of dealing with PSE trad bows and swapped me across the board for a Sammick Sage that is a remarkable shooter for the price. Sorry I couldn’t give more info on their longbows, but I’m over PSE for good.
in reply to: New Kota Prarie fire! #33429Man that’s a nice pair of bows you have there!
in reply to: Since we're around the campfire…. #33142I couldn’t find the smiley icon for drooling idiot, but that would be me! Nice arrows! Oh, and if the red isn’t bright enough for you, I’ll gladly take one of those off your hands! Very nice.
in reply to: Upgrades to the new longbow and arrows #33140Thank you Wex. The feathers are hand cut with scissors and masking tape and split with a knife (because I’m cheap). I couldn’t find any artificial sinew the other day, so I settled for a strand of B50 Dacron. (I was raised in the “if you can’t buy it, make it or substitute it” fashion) I’ve found this attitude to work for a number of things, stopping short of the motor vehicles.
in reply to: 40 yards, Kodiak Mag, elevated rest. #33117Very well done! I’ve shot a 52″, 55# indian mohawk all summer long and absolutely agree with you on the accuracy of a short bow. The accuracy is there- all in the stability of the shooter.
in reply to: Since we're around the campfire…. #32714Nice way to put it, but I still believe in magic!! I’ve noticed that my form is much the same, but that my hand seems closer to the arrow, causing my bow hand to be a bit higher and my sight picture is a bit different, with the arrow farther out in my peripheral view away from the spot I want to hit. Once I get that burned into memory, I’m sure I’ll do away with the errant shots between good groups.
in reply to: Since we're around the campfire…. #32390Oh man, Hickory arrows? I’d like to see those. Do you make them yourself? I doubt I’ll get much sleep between now and then- probably fall asleep as soon as I sit down in the woods!
in reply to: traditional recurve bow sights #308873Rivers Archery or RMS Gear migh have what you’re looking for.
in reply to: My New Longbow!! A Little Guidance Please… #30654Okay, so yesterday I decided to take the advice and put it to work. I shot the 400 spine bare shaft and WOW, was I ever wrong about them being right for this bow. I spent the rest of the day shooting 500 spine with 200 grains total up front and enjoyed it quite well. I’ll bare shaft a 500 and try different weight points this evening to see if I can dial it in, since yesterday my shooting was off a bit. I expected coming from recurve to longbow, I’d see a difference in my sight picture for shooting accurately, but not this much.
in reply to: My New Longbow!! A Little Guidance Please… #29345Thanks for the advice guys! I have a 28″ draw and the bow is 50# @ 28″. I would prefer to shoot 150 grain broadheads (mainly because I already have some woodsmans that have yet to take any game) but have been shooting the MFX Classic shafts with 50 grain brass inserts and 145-175 grain field points.
in reply to: Effective range based on accuracy #26300Most comfortably, I’d be in a very similar looking boat as yours. My daily practice is out to around 22 yds and my near frequent archery course visits can get me shooting confidently around 30, but only after making a few shots. I don’t know whether or not I would take a shot as far out as my regular long range (22 yds) or not (would completely depend on the moment and the confidence at the time), but would much rather hope to be in around 15 yards or so and this is the way I try to set up my brush/timber blinds in the woods.
in reply to: What are your plans? #25744My hunting buddy and I have spent countless weekends in the public woods we hunt near here and I think it’s time to allow the deer to marinate on our most recent brush blinds we’ve built, so I’lll probably stay out of the woods until our season opens in 3 1/2 weeks.
My plans include first picking up my new longbow this afternoon and becoming familiar with it over the next few weeks. I’ve already got arrows tuned for it, but will need to do some tweaking with the sight window to bring it to more of a center shot. Right now it has soft velcro on the shelf and window that need to go.
I’ve got another buddy who’s been hunting around a reservoir up north in the state for the past three years that has invited me out in November. Another good friend is itching to hunt with a muzzle loader on a private rock quarry where he has a cabin near another reservoir in NW Kansas and since the muzzle loader season runs through the first couple of weeks of archery season, I may spend a weekend up there with him as well this year. He and his in-laws took three nice bucks during last years rifle season, but I told him I’d like to hunt private land for does, not bucks, since Kansas issues up to 4 doe tags per hunter, good on private land.
I’m so ready to be in the woods hunting again I can smell it!
in reply to: Scouting and 'Shed' Hunting 8/11/12 #22367I got back out to the woods yesterday and had a ‘moment’ with nature. I got caught walking around with my eyes on the ground (looking for more turkey feathers) by a couple of yearling whitetails. When I realized what was going on, I froze at a full stand and was able to move in to 25 yds or so in my blue jeans and camo shirt before they realized they were being stalked (must be a yearling thing-don’t think mature deer would have allowed it). I was armed obviously, with only a quiver full of small game set ups, as deer aren’t yet open game.
When the deer fled the scene, I noticed a big squirrel crossing a draw about 10 yds from me, moving from one tree to another. I drew and touched anchor, glanced up the tree it was heading to and saw a smaller squirrel a few feet up the trunk. Putting two and two together, it dawned on me that this was a mother and a pup (if thats what squirrel young are called). She began coaxing the little guy to make a jump from one tree to another to no avail. Further inspection found another pup up the tree she had initially left to find her other offspring.
During about a 20 minute observation, I had passed up quite a few shot opportunities, allowing my heart to get the best of the situation and deciding that my satisfaction for taking game could not be filled at the loss of a member of this trio, but that if a mature male had shown himself, it would have been game on. Has anynoe else had an ‘ethical’ moment like this?
P.S. I did leave with another quiver full of feathers!!

+1 on the Limb Skins from 3Rivers. They are awesome and do not negatively affect the bow one bit.
