in reply to: Fletching glue #10136

I’ve had very good success with Bohning Platinum and Fletch Flex glues on both carbon and aluminum shafts. They do take a bit of time to dry, but are absolutely dependable. When dry, I apply a drop of glue to the front and back of the feather, which aids in locking it in. When finished, I put the tube of glue in a small ziplock bag and toss it in the freezer! Stays good almost indefinately. Allow to warm to room temp before using.

I shoot both a compound and a longbow. Both are 50 pound and drive arrows well through just about anything outside of Alaska and Africa. I do think the trend is toward lighter drawweights. Just look at the used stuff for sale on Ebay:
just about everything, wheeled bows and trad bows, tend to be high draw weights, typically 70 pounds for compounds, and 60 or so for trad bows. Low-poundage bows are tough to find. People seem to be unloading the heavy stuff.

Almost all you guys are onto the “industrial saran wrap” that pallets of building materials come shipped in, for stuffing your target bags.
I took this stuff and packed it hard into an 18x18x24″ cardboard box, taped it up really well, taped a paper target face on one side, and voila! an instant “block” target!
After shooting the crap out of one side, I taped another paper target face to another side (there are 6 sides) and am currently in the process of demolishing that one. I suspect it will last at least as long as a $90 commercial foam target, maybe longer.
Remember, practice makes for clean kills.

            Reg Darling,
You hit the nail on the head. The “losing gun rights” thing is a smokescreen.
I’d strongly recommend seeing the film “Food Inc.”

Steve McD, not to worry…. check this website:
              http://www.rmgo.org/alerts/2009-2099.shtml
It seems SB-2099 was introduced in 2000 and went nowhere.
There is no current SB-2099, and if there were, it would have to be made public and would have to come up for a full Senate vote. Seems to be a hoax. Not to worry.

Adding to the random answers I read about arrow type and weight: I’ve been shooting a 50lb reflex-deflex bow for nearly two years. Started out with xx75 1916 shafts and just felt they were too light, too whippy. I had some 4560 Carbon Express shafts around and tried them: too erratic. Back to aluminum: I’ve settled on xx75 2018 shafts 29″ long with 125g points. My draw length is just about 28″. Some would say my arrows are too stiff for my setup (especially since I use a B50 string, not fastflight) but they hit where I aim them, straight on, not tail out, and hit hard!
My best suggestion is to buy a few shafts of different sizes and give them a try. Then stick with what works best.
I’ve taken Bryon Ferguson’s recommendation: wood shafts are cool, but too much bother, too much variability. Stick with aluminum.

If your are looking for a tiny spot to focus on, try this:
Go to an office supply store and buy a package of 1″ diameter round neon yellow or orange stickers. For about $4 you can have a package of about 100 of them. They are found in the “stick-on labels” section. They show up great in low light, and are big enough, yet small enough, to focus on very well from 15-20 yards. They stick fine to foam targets, and just barely on burlap bag targets, but well enough.

Jerry, the suggestions TIC has made are good. There’s also a few things I’ve learned. I got a longbow about 1-1/2 years ago, after shooting a compound for four years with pretty good success, both on targets and deer.
As TIC said, shoot close and concentrate on form and repeating your motions and anchor point exactly every time.
Along with that, what has helped me is something I do with my eyes. Like you, I’m a RH shooter but am slightly left eye dominant. As I reach full draw and anchor, I visually sight up and down the shaft and to the target, I guess doing some mental calculation. Only takes a second or so at full draw.
My bow hand is very relaxed, and when I release, I try to hold my position with both arms until the arrow reaches the target. Doing these things as really improved my consistency to a solid 15 yards, and when I can do this to 20 yards, again, with consistency, I feel I’ll be ready to hunt deer with my longbow. Won’t risk a bad shot and wounded animal until then. Good luck!

in reply to: trad vs. compound #41401

Trad vs. Compound…I think about this all the time. I bought a sweet reflex-deflex longbow about a year and a half ago, and shoot it 3-4 times a week, mostly indoors in my shop on winter evenings and outdoors when I can during the day. Lots of outdoor practice during long daylight hours.
I also have a compound bow, picked up 5 years ago. I’m afraid that at this stage of my development, I still prefer to hunt with the compound because of its deadly accuracy and not wanting to wound and lose deer in the deep wood and salal in our forest. For myself, its an ethics thing: when I feel an adequate level of confidence, the longbow will replace
‘ol wheelie, but for the immediate future, it shoots targets only.
