So will putting collars on the rear of the arrow add weight back there to enhance performance like was discussed on April 1st? 🙄
in reply to: Re-Thinking old Thoughts on Woodies #14571I guess I’m old school cause I refuse to complicate simplicity.
I buy wood shafts spined 5# heavier than the bow I’m shooting, figured at the AMO 28″ draw, cut them 28″ cause my draw is usually about 27 1/2″, put 125 gr. points on them, use a slight left helical (there are many years of experience for the adage, right hand, left helical, left hand, right helical, more in a minute on that) with 3-3 1/2″ feathers. Sometimes four 3″. These smaller sized feathers I’ve just started experimenting with in the last couple of years because of some whippersnapper from ID.:D
99% of the time if that doesn’t work it’s because of a crook in the arrow I missed or I’m being sloppy on my release and my old school experience tells me there is lots and lots of arrow flight problems caused by a sloppy release. Just sayin:):)
RH,LW-LH,RW. I don’t shoot a recurve enough to debate to have an opinion about them but with a longbow, holding one’s hand, like I do, where if I raise my point figure a hair’s breath I raise my arrow off of the shelf, a RW fletched shaft starting to spin towards the bow can ruin your day when it imbeds feather parts and pieces in your finger. Sometimes caused by a bit too stiff of a spine, sometimes because of nock position, sometimes cause it’s out to get ya.
We never pondered a bunch when we built woodies, I still don’t but that’s because I’ve been doing it for a long time and what I do works. Kinda like Clay says, I dunno, I just make it work.
Another thought, some oldtimer, much better archer than I, said. “That’s what feathers are for”.

Your intuition is spot-on R2. After much time and money spent researching the issue, I can now conclusively state that: Cactus plants are alive 🙄
Does look like a bunny though…
Yup, only bunny cacti live around Memphis, TX.
If it had come to a committee decision of those around me, it would have been a beer matter for sure and someone probably would have watered the poor thing.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #13922I’ve been at Memphis, TX since last Thursday setting up a TBOT tournament Thursday and Friday, 50 targets, 30 for one course, 20 for the other.
I shot 80 targets Saturday and 80 today. After two days of target work, 3 of us, and two full days of shooting, this old feller about wore out. Happy though, I had a great time.
It’s about time that I pass on the target duties to the younger generation methinks. Maybe there is such???
Time to retire and just enjoy shooting.
I came across this neat little cactus and just had to share the picture.
It looks alive:D
in reply to: Mitten's article in the current TBM #7737One thing about y’all, the cook ain’t gonna be very busy. 😀
It all boils down to what ya got on your mind to be doin, do it and do it well.
Now if you want a bait of brookies rolled in cornmeal and fried in butter……………..
in reply to: Mitten's article in the current TBM #63614It goes to show that we don’t have to have the modern, the expensive, the “in” equipment to accomplish our means. We can do it simply and have fun.
We may want or desire, some feel the need to have the biggest, baddest and mostest.:) But that’s an individual choice.
Those that can take the simplest of gear whether it be archery equipment, fishing equipment or the tools of whatever activity they are pursuing and make it work, have fun and survive with these will be those of us who keep it all alive.
Mitten took his simple equipment and conquered and had an added bonus. Some of us fish simple and achieve.
I’m not knocking anybody’s equipment, tools, toys, don’t get me wrong, just trying to say that what we choose is our business and simple can be fun.
Congrats mitten. Great job.
in reply to: Mitten's article in the current TBM #63543Fly rod gives ya more reach uh.:? But ya gotta wear Levis and tennis shoes. Waders raise things up a notch:D
Looks cooler than a cane pole too.
Shoulda seen the looks when I used a cane pole on a lake on the Grand Mesa in Co.
This is kinda on the topic of doin it how you wanna.8)
There were just many trout feeding ‘right’ there as there were ‘way’ out there.
in reply to: What Ya NOT Got Goin'? #63541Yeah, a covey of quail don’t hold a candle compared to one of those big mamas getting airborne uh!
Your heart well Scott???? How bout yer britches??:D
in reply to: Stone Arrowheads #63533Yup! You’re a working man. How many tools do you use in your livelihood that you pick up to use and “just know” by feel it’s gonna work just fine?
When your tool is a bow and arrows, shot’em since you could walk, you’re gonna know by feel whether it’s kosher or not.
I’ve weighed arrowheads of different sizes and types of stone and there is no pattern of any kind. Big ones can weigh less than little ones, different pieces of stone that look similar can weigh way different.
When it comes to eatin’ lots of complications are not worried about or even thought of.
Learn how to shoot the d**n thing and go fetch supper.:D
My thinkin!!!!

in reply to: Mitten's article in the current TBM #63048Oh no, I’m in trouble.
I ain’t gonna tell ya the best way to fish the brushy mountain creeks for brookies. I’ll be tarred and feathered:roll::roll:

in reply to: Stone Arrowheads #62499Hey Scott, the pics not the best in the world but you can get the idea.
A lot of them from my mom’s old place in western CO., some from my aunt’s old land east of Aquilar, CO., some from here on my hunting lease, some from my old daddy-in-law’s place in south central NM. and others from????
Critch, that’s probably a metate, some like these, were permanent where the tribes camped for a period of times, others were smaller and portable. The rock laying on the big rock is called a mono. That’s what the grinding was done with.
Various kinds of wild grains as well as corn were ground in these metates.
