in reply to: Small game points? #37471
When stumping and hunting small game I have a supply of judo points, starting to dwindle though, that I use and just regular old blunts mostly when stumping with my wood arrows. With aluminum I like a field point with a flat washer or star washer if I can find them.
I’ve got into carbon arrows some and am pleased so far but on a retiree’s budget I just haven’t had the desire to smack them on rocks and trees and whatnot yet. Wood splinters are cheaper.:lol:
in reply to: King Kong is Coming #37414Stealth arrows to start with. Hope this works with photobucket app on iPhone??
I tried some experiments with EFOC with these shafts and of course with wood more weight up front is a major factor with spine. Simpler to stay with 125 gr. or perhaps 145 gr. to weaken a bit of a too stiff a spine and shoot a heavier wood for weight if I want. We’re always trying to improve and experiment and play but it’s really hard to beat a properly spined wood shaft with 125 gr. “sharp” broadheads and a +/- 50# bow for what most of us do.
I’ll leave my EFOC business to my carbon shafts and be happy with that.
I do have some 3555’s, 29.25″, with 100 gr. brass inserts and 125 gr. points with 47# longbow that are smoking. They come out right at 497 gr. total weight. I’m shooting right @ 27 1/2″ draw.
in reply to: Elkhearts, old and new #34464When did want and need become two separate entities when it comes to a new bow?:lol:
Kinda like putting a teaspoon of sugar in my cup of coffee, I don’t need it but I want it. Same deal!!:P Trouble is I can afford the sugar.
in reply to: Oldest Regular Equipment #34331Cool! You got something older than me and David! But not by much for me anyway :D:D:D. I’ve been wearing my old felt hat when hunting for 25+ years. My wife asks why, I answer why not. Scent killers don’t work but my lucky hat does sometimes.
in reply to: Scent proof? #33485I’m fond of using it during special doe only seasons. 🙄
in reply to: Scent proof? #33384I have this little gadget I plug into the cigarette lighter in my truck that warms scent oils up and spreads the odor around. I like the smell of sage so I use sage oil. I figure that when I get to where I’m going the deer think I’m a human that smells like sage so I just hunt into the wind smelling like sagebrush fooling no one. I like it though!:D
There were a couple of articles in F&S mag a few months ago dealing with scent control. They tried all kinds of scent eliminators and cover ups and never totally fooled their dogs. Skunk screen was somewhat effective, but to each his own with that stuff.
in reply to: Recurve Strings ? #33372I believe it be 3″ shorter for longbow and 4″ shorter for a recurve. Generally good place to start.
in reply to: Feather Arrow Rest………? #29909Just curious, does the “wet feather syndrome” effect feather rests?
in reply to: Elkhearts, old and new #29905Hey, I’ve typed some “gutter balls” in the past :D:D. Shot some with my bow too :lol: At least the results were the same.
Would like to be where I could see and shoot a shrew. Someday!!!! An “Elkheart” sounds way interesting.
in reply to: back from SA photo safari #25818I hate to re-use a word but “Awesome”….Beautiful animals! Glad for you…
in reply to: Success or not #22135Right on Alex, Ralph.:D
in reply to: Magic Beans!?! #21197Don’t believe that’s what I consider “organic”. I don’t get much of anywhere but the Texas Panhandle anymore but I guess canned hunting, hormone raising of “trophy animals is pretty widespread. I know there are some “trophy ranches” not far S.E. of my part of the world.
Hope it’s not a ‘bad thing’ to have a 15″ 8 pt. whitetail and 3×2 muley in my freezer. 😀
in reply to: Happy Thanksgiving!!! #16632Happy Thanksgivings pilgrims:D and may all be blessed.

in reply to: A Hunters Heart #62961I’m glad we have one in our ranks that can put the thoughts and feelings that many of us think and feel out to the world. The ability to express in written words in an articulate manner is a blessing. David’s words are sensitive when needed and sharp and to the point when necessary. I enjoy reading his works. Ralph
in reply to: Public Land hunting ethics #62278Some places they’re ain’t much except what you bring with ya. I had a friend once that shot a deer (rifle), went to fetch it, was positioning it to gut and that’s the last he remembers till he woke up in the hospital. Apparently someone shot him for his deer. He lost his leg from the gunshot. I know that’s probably the only one low life in the world like that but there’s plenty other trouble out there. 99.999% of the time things are pretty cool, your gonna come across people or just as your fixin to let loose or pull the trigger someone else beats you to it. Not much can be done about that.
Jim Finch and I had a dude tracking along behind us one time breaking branches, just making all kinds of racket. Late that evening Jim found where that feller was sitting in a tree in that vicinity so he sneaked (can’t believe the English dictionary don’t allow “snuck”) up behind him and scared the bedevil out of him. Tickled me!!!
