in reply to: 300 Tuffhead testimony #18903
Jp,
That’s a great story. It would have been really interesting to know what that arrow on the 2nd doe hit that made her bleed so much without expiring.
I had a similar result with my Tuffhead, after going through a bear’s scapula and sticking in the offside rib, it is still sharp, no nicks or bent tip, like you say just needs a stropping to be hunt ready again. They are impressive.
That snow makes me jealous! I miss the winters.

in reply to: Post EHD Hunts #17107I did not know anything about epizzotic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) until your post. I had to google it. How large of an area and how many deer did it affect?
in reply to: Yew Longbows #12190Hey Codger,
I shoot a yew selfbow I made myself. Its the first yew bow I’ve made. I love it. probably second only to osage orange. The hardest part is finding a tree that is not twisted or without knots and branches. It has great cast and memory.
As for hand shock. I only recently shot a laminated recurve for the first time, and man it was smooth! So my selfbows have more hand shock than laminated bows, but that may be my design error, not sure.
Anyway I love the stuff. Have a few staves drying and will be working on some more bows this winter.
in reply to: A wife's perspective #10066That was pretty funny man.
One time I had my girlfriend out with me, and we were following this buck’s trail. I was going really slow, and after about 1/2 hour I looked back to check in with her and she was 1/4 mile back sitting on a rock sunbathing!
Mark,
I started doing Yoga last year because I had a sciatica issue flare up. It has helped tremendously. There are muscles I never knew I had that I stretch in Yoga.
Forget the leotards. Yoga is Hard! I guarantee you will be shaking and struggling to support your body in some of those poses when you thought you were a strong guy (I sure did and still do struggle, its freaking tough!).
It has improved my balance, range of motion, and strengthened muscles… All of which helps when stalking game.

in reply to: Our Own Worst Enemy #62306Hey Bender, you’re right, by violating Wanton Waste laws they traversed into poaching territory. But they most likely had deer tags and were walking around with a firearm, hence “other hunters”.
Nice to know another bowhunter in the area.

in reply to: What is the complete opposite of a Camo Bow? #56794Cameron didn’t you just post another bow you finished:shock: You’re cranking them out man! This one is really good looking:D
in reply to: Our Own Worst Enemy #56792Thanks for the support fellas. I went and talked to the BLM Ranger today, and he was very empathetic and supportive as well. Also contacted the CADFW warden. That’s a good idea writing to the paper, I’m going to look into that.
in reply to: Bow building Goal Accomplished! #39679Hey Cameron,
I hunt with an AO tag too. Best thing for me is to drop down in some steep ravine with no road below me. That keeps most people out cause you have to butcher it down there and pack it up the hill, even if its not that far from the road (1/2 mile is sufficient to lose people if its steep). Or get out in the wilderness. Either way, even if I see rifle hunters out there, they are usually pretty good hunters cause its not for everybody to hunt those places. Have a frame pack at the truck.
Good luck dude, hope you can put a notch in that sweet bow!

in reply to: Filled My Buck Tag #39673Nice deer! and nice photo too. Hope your daughter gets one of those bucks!
in reply to: EFOC & Tuffhead combo #35891Then that’s good Ed, the more people using the best arrow setup they can the better. And I agree, odd more trad hunters don’t try it. When that book comes out let us know, even though its for compound shooters, I’d like to take a look.
in reply to: EFOC & Tuffhead combo #35463Ed, that’s interesting that you think there are more compound hunters using UFOC/EFOC setups. You’re definitely in more contact with other bow hunters than I am, but I didn’t think it was that common for compound users. Last month I ran into two compound hunters using fixed-2 blade broadheads and that was surprising to me.

in reply to: Warm Weather Whitetails #34733You know I usually do the early morning til the thermals shift take a nap hunt the evening. But I’ve seen does, bucks, and bears out feeding in the middle of the day when its hot. In a book called “Blacktail Trophy Tactics”, Boyd Iverson states that big bucks will get up during the middle of the day to eat, staying within 100 yards of their bed, and if you know where they bed you can have a chance. And he also says that in the early seasons when bucks are still looking for nutrients to grow antlers they move more during the day.
Sometimes I wonder if I’m missing something during my midday naps…? But I’m with you guys, it feels a lot better with some chill in the air.
in reply to: EFOC & Tuffhead combo #34152Yeah its rare to find a compound user without a multiblade or mechanical broadhead.
in reply to: Killed a Beautiful Bear Today! #33317Hey Etter, here’s one that let me kill him yesterday. I say let me, cause he walked right into me and would’ve literally bumped into me if I hadn’t hissed at 5 yards, which turned him broadside and allowed me the shot!
He’s my first bear with traditional gear. Spotted him feeding on fallen acorns, started to stalk him, when I decided that I’ve ruined to many opportunities by rushing in to things, so I waited next to an oak trunk, and that’s when he walked, feeding, up the ridge to me.
