in reply to: Cross hand-eye dominance #39523
Mojohand, may I suggest that first off you confirm that you are left eye dominant, this is how I would test, it is best done in the morning after a good night’s sleep.
Pick a well defined spot 5-10 yards away, point at it with both eyes open, close left eye, if the point of your finger remains on the spot you are right eye dominant, reverse the procedure and the point should now appear to the left of your finger, if your finger remains on target with either eye closed then you don’t have a dominant eye a bit like being ambidextrous.
Like Patrick says many people just change hands and for folks with left dominant eyes this does not seem to be a problem but for me it’s all but impossible I can’t shoot a bow, rifle or shotgun off my left shoulder but did manage with a handgun but very poorly.
Good luck and enjoy your new found sport, Mark.

Dave, my wife can be equally complimentary, she recently suggested that if I really loved her I would have married someone else, after 26 years! I was hurt.

in reply to: Flemish strings #29845Hold on a minute folks what happened to step by step, can someone just tell me what I need to gather around me before commencing this voyage of discovery.
I really need an idiot guide I’ve successfully failed to learn this art on two previous occasions.Mark.
in reply to: Swimming Reindeer Sculpture 13,000 years old #29813I’ve found this fascinating, could these people be herding reindeer as the Sámi do now in northern Europe. If they were semi nomadic then they would almost certainly have lunar calendars as you say.
Val’s insight gives another interesting angle and as he suggests if the herds of bison etc. had become severely depleted would this have encouraged these people to become herders to secure a valuable sources of meat, milk, hide and stock to trade and carry them through long cold winters.
The migration might have been a time to harvest not only meat and gather raw material but to replenish herds with calves after slaughtering their animals through the winter.
It’s like having a puzzle with half the pieces missing we will never see the whole picture.

in reply to: Swimming Reindeer Sculpture 13,000 years old #26317Hi Dave
Glad you enjoyed it, not sure about the marks, may have been made latter, but I doubt it. I know its not possible but just imagine holding it.
I have trouble comprehending the time that has passed since this was made and how even now how many of us do the same, my wife describes it as making kindling. Was it for his own amusement, trade or a gift after returning from a hunting trip none of these things will ever be answered.
I look forward to any other details you can get.
Did you read the comment from the museum’s curator regarding religious symbolism and the crucifix I have never thought of this angle.
Mark.
in reply to: Mittens?!!! #25518Hi Chris
If you would like a project may suggest something I saw years ago. A palmless sheep skin mitten that was worn with a fingerless woollen glove, the mittens were attached by cord in the sleeves that allowed the user to pull the mitt off and not worry about loosing it. Might even have ago myself.
