“look at ourselves in the mirror each morning” self-dignity, who is the real enemy here?
Dave,
I am very sorry, but I must humbly disagree with you on many of your points above. First, let me start with the cliché “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Who made them, or anyone, the people who define what “trash” is or is not?
Next, aside from the point above, your argument is held together by the assumption that every “canned hunt” is unethical, deer tied to a tree, type of operation. Again, I humbly disagree. Yes, there are plenty. I am not a fool (I think) but I really disagree with the “one broad stroke of the brush” mentality when dealing with anything, even the eco-terrorist people.
My view of this type of “hunting” is what many say about killing. It is “harvesting”. I go to the store and buy ground beef. I always come home with beef (unless the forecast around here calls for ½” of snow, in which case the shelves are bare). What chance did the cow have? On the other hand, an animal in a “caged” hunt at least has some chance. Very little, but some. Why, as brennanherr stated above, is a slaughterhouse looked upon as being more acceptable than a preserve. If anything, giving a person the ability to do it themselves sounds more noble to me. If you take a life, chances are you will value that meat much more than if you “picked” it from a pretty little shelf in a nice, climate controlled store where nothing dies and everything is just peachy. IMHO, the word “caged” more accurately describes the livestock industry (in many cases, again, I am not trying to do the very thing I said I am against and paint cattle farming with one broad stroke) every bit as much as preserve hunting. So my question is what is the difference of going to the store / farm for my meat versus to the preserve?
Now to another point. I couldn’t agree more with J.Wesbrock. Look at how the antis and politics ruin hunting and how they actually hurt the very animals they claim to protect.
On that same note, the “cleaned up by your enemy” thing is (IMHO) too simplistic. I am not for whaling, but am very much for the Japanese fleets. They are HUNTING. No matter what loophole they use, the fact is, they only take up to a certain amount, they do not poach, and the fact that the meat winds up someone’s dinner plate simply means the entire animal is being put to good use. “Shoot only what you eat.” How many here have said the very same thing? If these pirates / terrorists (finally labeled accurately by the courts) win, how long until they are in the woods during hunting season? PETA is already trying to change the word fish to “sea kittens”. Dumb, I know, but how long until the deer become “land dolphins” and moose and elk “land whales”?
Again, as stated by others, I let my $$$ cast my vote. I also see the “gated community” thing as an alternative that can keep the “slobs” out of the woods. Like the Blackbeard Island thread says, who would want to spend all that energy just to maybe get an 80# deer? Not a slob. Only someone who values the experience of the hunt and counts success as being blessed enough to even make it out there. Everything else is just gravy.
I also feel it is a slippery slope. Ban this, what’s next? You might think that it’ll never happen, but once some precedence is set, who really knows? I am not advocating anything here. I am only cautioning against any knee-jerk reaction (we have had enough of those lately). I can make many parallels about hunting a preserve versus hunting in a desert over the only water for 100 miles. I can give reasons, make excuses, etc. Quite honestly, I don’t even know the USHS’s stance on hunting. Still, this is a time when maybe some extra regulation can go a long way. But the number one way to regulate is simply to let your $$$ speak for you.
Again, all this is IMHO. I am not advocating anything. I also don’t believe that a preserve is “hunting”. I am happy with “harvesting” or the like. I know it’s a touchy subject. I do not mean this to offend anyone (PETA excluded). I am simply adding my 2¢. All comments welcome. No offence taken, I promise. Be well.

in reply to: Best Fletching Cement? #14467Etter,
I think it’s 3Rivers that has a “how to” video on using the tape. It’s basically strong double-sided tape that is the width of the vane. You put the feather in the jig, put tape on it, remove the backing from the other side exposing the second sticky side and then press on the shaft and you’re ready for the next one. At this time I usually press on the front of the feather with a fingernail and run it to the back while keeping pressure on it, just for added security as you may notice some spots that have not completely stuck after pressing it on with the jig (looking between the feather and arrow shaft). This adds another 10 seconds or so. After all 3 [or 4] are done, you remove the arrow from the jig and put a drop of glue forward and aft on the feather. Soon aas that dries, you’re G2G. An $8.50 roll is enough for several dozen arrows (depending on feathere length, it could be more). Just the time it saves is worth every penny. I guess this is the time when I have to add: I don’t work for 3Rivers or Bohning. I am a nurse. I paid for the product I am reviewing………
I believe this is the instructional video:

I’ve tried to find that one several times but it is not cheap.
Not to bring up old topics (or open old wounds as the case may be), but it’s $10 on eBook at the “A” place. Be well.

in reply to: Best Fletching Cement? #14283Etter,
Not sure if it’s what you’re looking for, but I have started using the fletching tape and it works GREAT. You still need a dab of glue on the front and back end of the feather, but that does not affect the speed at which you can finish an arrow. When using glue, I would wait 5 minutes per fletching to turn the jig to the next position. That’s 10 minutes per arrow. 15 if you wait for the last vane instead of chancing it and removing it right away.
if you haven’t used it, I would definitely say try it. I am pretty sure it works for all arrow types (Al, C and Wd), but you might want to double check. As far as holding, I have lost a few fletchings, but not in “normal” use. The last one I lost was while stump shooting. My arrow when right through a piece of dead wood and I guess one fletching scrapped off. It’s also real easy to do a repair on an arrow and be hunting that same day. I’m sure there are great cements out there, but ever since I bought the tape, I won’t go back to liquid. BTW: I use Al arrows. Hope this helps. Be well.

in reply to: What's in a Name? #14155Mine is the transliterated word for “frog” in Russian. I was born in the former Soviet Union and still speak the language. I like frogs, though there are some species of toads I could do without 😕 . I tried to write the word in Cyrilic in another post, but it didn’t work. So I just included it in a picture 😀 . Good thread, I often wondered the same thing. Be well.

in reply to: Arrow of Light #14112There are some kits available from 3Rivers. If you want to be more local/authentic, drop me a line. I have a few pre-made heads. They aren’t for hunting. They are not sharp enough. I didn’t make them, I am just using them for templates. I could give you one or two if they fit your need. I can send you a pic if you’re interested.
I believe this is the link to 3Rivers for a finished one:

and for the AOL:
and a DIY kit:

in reply to: Blackbeard Bound! #12182Etter,
You’re the best. 😉 Thanks for taking the time. I have too many places I want to go in order to make up for the years I thought that happiness came from an ATM machine 😳 . I figure I just have to make a list and start crossing stuff off. Sika deer, Proghorn, Elk, whitetail, mule deer, couse, ‘bous. That means I need to take some roadtrips to WY, CO, WA, TX, KY, TN, ID, PA (had to throw in the home state), GA, FL, etc. Thanks again for giving me a push just to start the darned list in the first place. No time like the present. Be well.

in reply to: Blackbeard Bound! #12064OK, not to get too ignorant on you, but could you walk me through the trip from parking your car to getting back in it? Just the highlights. I’d like to hear how it really is. Here is how I envision it, tell me if I’m way off.
Drive 12 hours. Park the car. Get your stuff and go to the boat (guessing will need reservations). Get on the island and put your stuff down where you plan to camp (inside of the 20 acre camping area). Grab your stand and go to “mark your territory”. Find a spot, hang your stand, leave some TP and go back to camp. Pitch your tent, have some food, go to sleep. Wake up, go to your spot, climb the tree, wait for a deer, climb down, go back to camp. If you are tired, dress like a deer and lay on the main trail, and the DNR will take you back in a gator 😆 .
Now, first question is: when/where is report time/place? Is this a Friday-Sunday hunt or only Saturday to Sunday?
Next, I am guessing there will not be any hunting on Sunday as noon comes pretty quickly, so it’s really a one day hunt 🙁 ?
Is there any hunting in the evening? Sounds like morning is in a tree and afternoon is a stalk?
You mention climbing sticks, are climbing stands ok 😕 ?
Are there porta-potties or is it “bring a shovel” 😳 ?
Beyond all of the planning, this sounds like it would be well worth the 12 hour drive. Any other info you can think of would be well appreciated. Thanks for the help so far. Be well.

in reply to: Blackbeard Bound! #11748Etter,
I guess I can post here as there may be some others who have the same questions. So, here goes:
I know you go to the second of the two hunts. When is that this year?
How crowded is it?
If you don’t have a boat, is there a ferry, charter, etc? Any ideas on price?
I assume you need a GA hunting license. Any other license/permit? (Also, will the 3-day out of state license be enough?)
Any tips on a packing list?
Any suggestions on where (on the island) to go, make camp, hunt, etc?
Are there any regulations as far as campfires, alcohol, stump shooting, etc?
How bad are the pigs there?
More questions to come, but that should be a good start for me for now.
Thanks!
Be well.

in reply to: Blackbeard Bound! #11682Etter,
I got some info from you prior. If you don’t mind, I’d like to PM you and pick your brain a little more. I hear you about the “success”. I would love to just be able to say I hunted the island. Just to have that experience. Pork or venison would just be a bonus. Let me know. Be well.

in reply to: Yea,,, I know I'm pushing the limits #11675I have to be honest, I find beauty in simplicity, and that bow is just beautiful all around. I love to see the blood, sweat and tears that bowyers put into their work to make literal works of art {with a purpose}. But I am equally impressed with something that looks like it was just picked up from the woods and was shaped by nature in much the same way as a piece of glass can be rubbed smooth by the rolling waves over a period of time. Anyway, great looking bow. Be well.

in reply to: How many bows do you have? #11669I have an old longbow, 52# @ 28″, 68″. No make or model, just a {shoddy} made bow I paid $100 for. I am pretty sure I heard it crack one time when stringing it. Oh well. I play around with it and will probably use it as a guide when I make my own selfbow. My next one is a InterNature? TD recurve 45# @28″, 62″?. It’s a take-down with a spot for just about any attachment you can think of, from stabilizer to quiver to arrow-rest. I actually shoot it off the spring-wire rest as the shelf is pretty flat and will probably not work well for shooting, although it is padded. My third is a Crow Creek, Black Feather TD hybrid, 52# @28″, 66″? (I can’t keep track of all these lengths 😳 ). Awesome bow. Love to tinker with it, tune it, shoot it, feel it in my hand. Just an awesome weapon. I hunt with it every now and again, but mainly use it for the regular/3D range. Next is my JavaMan American LB, 50# @ 28”, 66”?. This one, I “hated” so much that I ordered a second one about a week after I got it. I think my arrows each weigh more than the bow, and it shoots so quiet that I could swear the voices in my head drop a few decibels when I let the string go 😈 . This is my primary hunter, though that will change when the second JM is done (hopefully soon). It will be (if I remember) 70” and about 80# at 28”. I have started to consider taking the recurve out a bit more into some of the thick stuff as I find it difficult to maneuver the longer bows. Just a thought. As the weather gets a bit warmer, I will be getting out more and more, not just to shoot, but to “stalk” those 3D targets and see if I can get some shots of from various positions, angles, etc.
Now, if you ask the spousal unit “how many bows does your husband have?” Her answer would be simple: “Too many!” 🙄 Whatcha gonna do? Be well.

in reply to: The War of Arrows…. Great movie! #11642I had seen it around the same time WexBow posted on it. I have to agree with Dave about acting/story line, etc. I actually watched it twice. First time I saw the first half hour and turned it off. I picked it up about a month later. It turned out to get better after the first part. Maybe there is a cultural aspect that, if understood, would have made it more interesting, but the shooting scenes were pretty cool. It’s fantasy (like Lord of the Rings), but still cool to watch. I believe it’s based on some facts as far as broadhead design, etc. Anyway, difinitely worth another look. Be well.

in reply to: Gas Prices Keeping Me At Home #62766No kidding. I was really hoping to get out west, but between the out-of-state license fees and gas (driving or flying) I guess I should just be happy with the local hunting I have. At least until I get the teleporter up and running. Be well.
