That’s the killer. I’ve not shot a lot, nor have I really fully tuned her. It’s been shooting real well Dave. I’m close to being tuned, great arrow flight so far (GrizStik Alaskans currently cut 30″ w 315gr field points) Just off a bit ( arrows hitting to right of target line by maybe an inch / inch 1/2 with occasional mock kicked left ).

I feel like it looks “off” but seems to shoot real well… And he has been great about looking at it. He’s out of town this week which, as u know from my other post, is fine with me :D. In fact, I pulled in tonight to 4 deer in front yard, owl perched on my barn and you could hear coyotes lighting up my side and the other side of the lake!

I did bring the bow with me to continue bare shafting a bit 8)

        Hey Giggle

I didn’t fill anything out but did have a conversation and told him I’m a split finger shooter…

        Does that matter. I’ve heard/read a lot where it supposedly doesn’t …

I just have to laugh sometimes about going traditional while I type away away on my kindle which is hooked wirelessly to this magic thing we call the Internet and talking to people from around the country/world instantly. 😀

            Well put Alex:!:

As much as I crave the simplicity of being at my Adirondack Camp (Leaving for rest of week tomorrow afternoon right after I deliver my eggs for Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom project) chasing critters w my recurve the irony certainly not lost that I’m sitting in bed right now with my wife, communicating with all of you, around the country (& our friends to the North 😉 ) instantly, while typing on the iPad sitting in my lap :D. Add to that the posts I’ve made while in the woods from my iPhone and, quite frankly, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry 🙄

              Thanks Robin 😀

              But, of course, I have a question…

Does it matter of the silencers are reversed in the Heterodyning model? Meaning the shorter distanced puff at bottom and longer at the top? Just wondering …

                Hey Alex

In my wheelbows days I shot 2.5-3″ feathers and got great flight w broadheads out to 50 yards and beyond w my Matthews, shooting Easton A/C/E’s. Now I shoot either Beman MFX 400 or GrizzlyStik Alaskans ( depending on bow ) with 5″ lw parabolics and also get great flight (once I’m tuned! 👿 ).

I have been looking at Dr Ed’s studies utilizing his A&A fletching which appears similar to what your saying. I don’t know enough to explain it to you and have not YET tried it but it utilizes ( if I recall correctly ) short, high fletching meant to stabilize broadhead on a well tuned arrow.

There certainly are folks here WAY more knowledgeable on this topic who I’m sure can jump into the conversation.

                Good luck 8)

                  Hey CP

Should’ve been more clear. Yes I’m a staunch wool guy and in bitter cold I’ll swear by Ulfrotte silk blend BUT the blend is with polypropylene. I also use as a go to base layer as it wicks wonderfully and is comfortable next to the skin ( as are the silks ).

Love and wouldn’t give up my KOM/woolens for anything but, even lined, not exactly my first choice next to my skin 😯

                    Rayb

Sounds like heaven:!: unfortunately I have a very bad case of rheumatoid arthritis so the damp cold goes right through me:x. I love, and quite frankly, feel and do everything better in hot weather. Hotter the better. Makes my wife crazy as I LOVE 100* days w 100% humidity 😯 however, my most favorite pursuits, and my favorite place to be, is cold weather at my camp deep n the Adirondacks. Getting into real frosts already, last few weeks woke up to cruchy grass, and love it:!: you can almost smell the approaching rut. The bears are out in full force feeding, getting ready for the big chill ahead. when i walk through the woods, if im not paying attention, i invariably am treated (cursed?) with the sound of fleeing grouse as their wings beat furiously through my groves of aspen and sugar maple…

That true cold, with all the snow etc invigorates me even though my bones may creak a bit 😉

Big fan of DP’s books…I’ve read, and he’s been gracious enough to sign/inscribe each one, 4 of them now ( reading Writing Naturally as we speak).

As for Dr. Don, I seek out every article he writes and typically read them first. I’ve not had the pleasure of reading one of his books yet but plan to order one or two this month (I love to read when I’m in the woods, I know I know, I should be paying attention but to lose myself in a wonderful read about my favorite subject while sitting in The Good Lord’s Cathedral is an intoxicating situation I can’t walk away from -or put myself in enough 😀 )

Any suggestions as to which of Don’s books I should read first 8) ???

I’m sorry Alex. I’m still relatively new to this and never realized u were talking about Howard Hill. 😳

I assumed ( we all know that one!) you meant the “archery equivalent ” of the guys I see lining up shots 1200 yards away on some critter a valley and a half out to the horizon ! 👿 that’s not hunting. It’s a sniper assassination.

I totally agree with everything u said. Burns my a//-! How these guys are “pros” after a solid hour of shooting. Don’t get me started on the preserve thing. 😈

Anyway been a beautiful albeit quiet night in the deer woods here in Jersey. Time to head home !

Btw. Yes I do realize the irony of “railing against technology” as I post on my smart phone. 😀

lyagooshka wrote: [quote=David Petersen]Alex — with their high-poundage let-off, front and rear sights, and trigger releases, I must politely differ with you that compounds are “archery just the same.” It’s far closer to shooting a rifle than a real bow. Just a matter of keeping our terminology straight. 😛

Dave, I understand your point, and agree, but… I was saying “archery just the same” in terms of someone launching an arrow from a bow-type apparatus. I got into archery via the compound. I got into traditional archery because of the things you mention. But it got me into archery and then I was free to choose. You mention rifle, so just to poke the skunk 😛 , 80 yards is much closer to 20 yards than to 1200 yards (shots that can typically be taken at goats). An arrow going 300 fps is much closer to an arrow going 185 fps than to a 30-06 round at 2300 fps. AND (really gonna poke the skunk here 😆 ) I would like to bring up the 185 yard shot that killed an elk. It wasn’t a compound. No, it was a home-made longbow. I think we all know the shot I am referring to as well as the archer.

                          Anyway, point taken. Be well.

                          Alex

                          😀

Ok. You got me. Gotta ask… Who’s the “185 yard hero” 👿

Ridiculously Long shots, be they bow, rifle, muzzle loader , sling shot etc make me cringe. I love to play with my rifles. I can ring a 6″ gong consistently at 500 yards. With my compound I can put broadhead tipped arrows in a pop can at 50 yards BUT that’s at a range, with no pressure, perfect conditions etc. I don’t think I could ever bring myself to take those kind of shots on game (we’ll leave out extreme goat hunting here and I know a 50 yd shot very possible out west). I don’t know, something about it to me just doesn’t feel right…:?

Here’s a question…where do you put your silencers? Do you break up your string in measured sections OR do you look to see where oscillations converge after plucking?

I’ve seen/heard both methods and honestly can’t tell difference. I have some new SBD strings that I’m setting up and can’t decide which method to use….

                              Can’t stand the cold:!:

unfortunately the thing we all love the most tends to be the best in cold weather ( with the exception of course to all our friends in South West part of our great nation 😀 )

                              Hey Roger,

Just needed to say that I went to your site and have to compliment you on some wonderful pieces there….particularly the piece about your Dad, growing up and your assortment of bows… I came later in life to traditional archery though I did tinker with a bit in early 90’s when I owned a “speed shop” ( aka compound pro shop ). Your story, especially how we can feel the reverence and love you have for your Dad is touching…well done Brother 😀
