      Awesome clip!

Where do we get more? Dave mentioned a YouTube something or other. Do you have a channel?

Those bunnies remind me of a certain 10 pt I’ve gotten acquainted with this season…

        Thx Dave and Steve

        I know I’ve made a choice, the right one…I’ve honestly never had so much fun :!::D {Not saying I’ll never hunt with another weapon…still love my MZ’s and custom rifles etc…:wink: }

I did however breakdown today, and in moment of extreme duress, I did what we on this quest of ours could only consider unimaginable…incomprehensible……yep, saw my buddy Jeff at Allegheny Mt Bows here in good ole NJ and ordered a new bow…54″ 50@27″ LONGBOW (with a nice fat recurve grip of course) :!::!: 😀

ok I know…it’s an excuse but what the hell….8)

Pretty soon I might just chase that SOB down – the buck, not Jeff 😆

You know guys, Shotgun and Muzzleloader STILL open in my zones here in Jersey…

          Soooooooo

I’m sitting in blind tonight, about 415 does start moving past, from different angle…wind was great, in my face and they came from about a 45* angle past. As I’m watching them I see a shadow literally move through the blind. Before I realize, there he is, same buck, big 10pt, about 125″ give or take moving past me at no more than 6 yards!! 😯

Too jazzed/scared/stunned I don’t move for fear he’ll hear or sense me. He feeds through and stops broadside at about 14 yards :!:8) I got him, I figured:!:

He puts his head down to feed, I lean out slightly…not going to hit blind AGAIN!!!…draw…I feel my anchor point hit ….release and …. Good bye as I sail my ABS Ashby tipped MFX right over his back 🙄 😳 😥 😥

I made ANOTHER ROOKIE MISTAKE:!::!: and aimed at his chest, not a spot. 😥

I REALLY can’t believe this….this deer has now laughed at me THREE TIMES THIS SEASON:twisted: I want him sooooo bad with my Widow I can taste it.

How easy would it be to grab my Xbow (recurve limb of course 😆 ) or wheel bow or, for that matter a slug gun ( yes, good Ole Replubic of NJ is STILL open for deer – all weapons 8) ).

But if I did that I’d know I took the easy way …

BTW – it’s midnight or so now and my heart STILL pounding…good excuse to get a shorter ntn recurve 😉

Good point Steve….in my training wheel days I’ve blown up my fair share of carbons…not pretty. Those splinters are next to impossible to get out ( rubbing side of my hand now from something like 12-15 yrs ago 🙄 ). And if, God forbid, it blows/splinters on a critter, you must excise and disregard quite a bit of meat to be safe. That being said, I’ve never had it happen recently….when they were new 20+ yrs ago was different story. Been shooting them for long time, currently MFX & Grizstiks and I aint given them up anytime soon ❗

              I wouldn’t think so as they’re pretty much an inert material…of course molecular scientist I ain’t 😀

                Amoose

You got me! I’d be willing to give it a try next season. I think you may be on to something….I consider myself experienced ( with everything but trad gear ❗ ). I’ve been blessed to have hunted/fished all over the and with a host of folks, good and bad….

On a bit of a “downer” note, you must be careful with your choices….I’m an insurance agent/broker by trade and have seen lawsuits that would blow your mind…everything from negligence to poor performance to people just plain not liking someone and trying to turn an illicit “profit”… I’m not trying to talk you out of it, on the contrary, I’d like to explore your idea….just be sure you have a complete understanding btw you and your “huntin’ buddy ” about expectations etc…while putting things in writing would seem an obvious choice, I caution putting things in writing IN THIS INSTANCE only insofar as that may be viewed contractually, thus elevating you to a guide, with all the liabilities thereof….insurance and fun with the state being at the forefront of those issues…

                  Yes you’ve made it!!

That is why, I hope, we all hunt with stick and string.

                  Congrats.

I’ve been told this before and it’s very very true….it’s one helluva an addiction 😀

                    Hey Snit

I had similar problem when I started…after reading/chatting with the folks here though, things have vastly improved with regular groups 3-5″@ 20 yards and hope to get even better.

Listen to the guys…you’ll get there:!:

I’ve read with interest from you and others about Osage self bows….any ideas where I can pick one up, relatively inexpensively? 😀

Started this Trad thing w a Widow, PMA 50#@28″ 62″ ttt. Since acquired Bear Super Kodiak which I had fully restored awa Allegheny Mountain from bowyer Jeff Strauss here in NJ for my son ( light but fun to shoot and workmanship is awesome). Gotta say I love them all for various reasons but next bow I’m ordering is another Widow. As for looks, you can get them without the phenolic or red glass. Not sure how performance will be effected but sure beautiful:D

I’ve seen, and read about here and elsewhere sooooooo many incredible bows …. Any ideas how we can collectively increase our “Archery Acquisition Fund” ❗

Just my two cents but yes, completely agree with Don…I’ve found that ducks hung whole for at least 5 days, undressed do taste better than ducks I’ve shot drawn and cooked in the same day…in fact in an old Julia Child book ( I’m a foody 😆 ❗ ) which I unfortunately can’t recall title she goes into how undressed, hung fowl, particularly ducks/pheasants/grouse are substantially better, more succulent and tender that those quickly drawn and prepared….good luck and can’t wait to hear how it was.

Sounds like you hit the dinner lottery…

Wonder I applaud you. You’re a better man than I. To my way of thinking, the implement here is virtually irrelevant. Compound, recurve, crossbow, atlatl etc etc. I am just as disgusted at what was done. Period. I would have an incredibly difficult time ever sharing my precious time afield with these two.

That being said, and in this time when we all are giving thanks for our beloved forest denizens and the pleasure they give us, I am very impressed at your ability to try and rehab at least one of them. It is a noble effort, one which I applaud and, hopefully, you are successful in.

Good luck, God Bless you and yours and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

So Dave, I had to share this…

I’m currently in my favorite / happy place. My camp in the So West corner of the beautiful Adirondacks. Here for week of fun frolic in the woods w the people I love most on this planet and to give Thanks for it all…

Anyway, I walked outside early this morning to sit on my frosty deck (22 & gloriously sunny) coffee in one hand, already tattered eared copy of recently purchased The Nearby Faraway in the other hand. After sitting a few moments and taking it all in, sun rising opposite the barn, light revealing towering white pines, two does eyeing me as they nip their way across the clearing back into the dark boreal forest I sat and read Chapter 16, once, then twice. For those of you that know what I’m referring too, the feeling was incredulous. For those of you who don’t, beg borrow , buy (not steal 😉 ) a copy and devour it, repeatedly. You’ll immediately understand, as well as be able to articulate, how the wildness of wilderness affects us all. Truly remarkable.

Of course the most interesting dichotomy of a hunter/outdoorsman’s life in 2011 is the fact that as I came back inside for cup # 2 I went and leaned over the one spot of the kitchen counter where I sort of get a cellular signal and proceeded to post this thought for our brethren to read….good or bad ? I’m not sure…

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families. Be well my friends. >>>–> JM

I find reading goes hand in hand with the intellectual, introspective more ethereal aspects of what we do…

Whatever camp I find myself in, I love African hunting classics, Capstick, Selby, Pondoro Taylor etc…The adventure, even reading about it, is incredible. Having been there now, it makes the fire/desire to return even more intense…I also love almost any well written, intellectually honest, outdoor lit…

My new read is a very cool author I just recently “met” around these parts, goes by DP…I do have a bit of an issue though…I started reading Dave this year and have already “devoured” Racks, Heartsblood, and just about finished with Nearby Faraway and Ghost Grizzlies. My NJ season doesn’t end until Mid February and I spend ton of time at my ADK camp where I can chase coyotes until mid March…at this rate I may finish the “Petersen Catalogue” by end of season (I read between posts, morning and evening here in Jersey and mid day lull at my ADK camp as well as just about every evening until the Mrs hits me )…. With Fly fishing all winter/spring, plus turkey and bear in spring, I’ll run out of Petersen Prose this year I’m sure….

Dave, please pump out a few more books for next season!

Nothing worthwhile starts without a dream.

I’ve hunted a lot of things in a lot of states, provinces and countries archery, rifle, handgun, MZ (archery 1rst love of course!). I’m a “loyalist” meaning once I find the guide/outfitter I click with for the animal/area I’m interested in, that’s it for me, no reason to look further as far as that is concerned. I’ve enjoyed incredile trips multiple times with same folks. I’ve also had disasters with morons who have no business even calling themselves hunters, let alone elevating themselves to the level of guide/outfitter…

If your heart’s in it, and you’re doing it for right reason (and sounds like you are) then why not?
