in reply to: Surplus Wool Quality? (it just showed up) #17666
BIG wool fan here, I don’t know about mil surplus but I can attest to the fact that used is the way to go IMHO.
I have many KOM garments which I believe are some of the highest quality wool garments you can buy….the issue – the price is astronomical 😯 ❗
I have two pieces, a vest and a jacket, that I paid retail for (approx $1000 for the two of them). Once I came too, I had two realizations: First – best stuff I’ve ever worn. Period. From Alaska to Africa and all points in between. Second – no way I can possibly afford this so I thought long and hard, posted here, the Gang and the Flea and low and behold, 2 pairs of pants (worn once), bibs (never worn), two shirts (worn maybe 1/2 doz times between them) and a hat (brand new in bag)…
Total if purchased retail – $2300 😯
Total I paid – $600!!!! Less than the jacket I bought originally!!!!
This being said, I say have at the surplus stuff…you shouldn’t be disappointed !:P

But I got to ask, how did you destroy 3 Grizzly Sticks? Heard them things were built like Sherman tanks.
I thought the same thing Justin but I’ve come to realize that the whole world is hype and the only “Complete Truth” is the outdoors and what we are seeing in front of us at any given time! 👿
Yes, they definitely are tough BUT they broke like any other carbon hitting the occasional big granite boulder that jumps up in front of the damn stump 35 yards away that you don’t hold high enough for …
I’m shooting ’em at 29.5″ w full insert and 75g weight added plus 300gr VPA small game head ( I hunt with Ashby’s and target/3D shoot w 315gr field points as I like to stay consistent in all my shooting)…
Oh well, $180 later and another dozen shafts on the way(NOBODY KNOWS MY LINDA HERE, CORRECT?) I hate to say purchased on the Flea— as some big wholesaler sells them discounted 10$ per dozen….at first I didn’t do it as I’m a small biz owner (insurance agency who makes my living insuring other small biz) and believe small biz must be supported as we make the world go round. Then it dawned on me that even the big wholesaler must be buying from the manufacturer so it’s all good in the long run…
and $20 saved gets me 2/3 of a broadhead 😯

Steve Catts has some fantastic stuff at all price levels…and the sky’s the limit for custom work!
in reply to: Atom broadhead #12949No worries Gnome, that’s what we’re here for….sorry if I got a little preachy there but you’ll see we Trad folks are a passionate bunch about the critters and lifestyle we love ❗
😀
in reply to: Atom broadhead #12047I’m very sorry for what I’m about to say so forgive me….in my experience, absolute crap:shock:
Saw them a few years ago, shot them from multiple wheelies and, just for the heck of it, out of my 50# Widow about two years ago…
A. Can literally just squeeze them and they come apart
B. Not really sharp, especially if you compare side by side with a good single bevel head
C. Can’t withstand being poked through a burlap target (from approx 6 yards shooting Matthews 60# compound, two of the wires where broken off….)
D. Didn’t fly any better or worse than any other head, coupled with the fact that as for practicing with them, it’s a REAL issue as again, they do not hold up to repeated impacts into a block type target, never even bothered trying them on a more solid, Rhinehardt type target…
As you can no doubt tell..not real high on these things. I put them up in the gimmick category with those other abominations sold by some Sports-type Guide with the lazer guidance system built in 😈
What really torques me up is that someone somewhere is going to / has launched one of these ( or lazer disasters ) at some undeserving game animal….
AARRGGHHH!!!!!
Sorry if I’m too emotional about this but whatever happened to quality equipment, used by ethical hunters, in fair chase hunt 🙄 ❓
in reply to: Upland Game Hunting #8376Back as a kid my Dad, Uncle, cousins had a tradition of pheasant hunting day after Thanksgiving….did it for years and years, shotguns of course….last few years we’ve had Turkey Day at my place in ADK’s….I purchase between 15-20 birds, stock some of my fields and Dad, my sons, my buddy’s and their sons have at ’em….in last few years since I’ve started on this thing of ours I’ve tried w my recurve….haven’t hit one of the sobs yet!!! 😳
in reply to: Judo lessons #57175Hey Gigglemonk
not a big Judo fan for reason your saying…great for stumping though!
I use the ACE Hex in 300gr (hunt w Ashby’s and use 315gr matching weight fieldpoints from ABS for all practice)…
That 300gr Hex kills everything I’ve hit with it deader than dead 😆
using a 50# Widow PMA or my 52# Fedora Stalker 8)
in reply to: Bow Stringer #57171I wouldn’t brace any bow without a stringer. IMHO you’re asking for trouble. Not sure who makes (may be multiple makers) but I use the stringer with a nylon “cup” on one end and a simple rubber “block” on the other which rests midway up the limb. Doesn’t matter if it’s a longbow or a recurve…8)
in reply to: Blind Olympian sets new archery record #57139God bless that archer….:D
Incredible how our sport can make the world a bit smaller…
As long as my woods are deep and my forest wild, and no human inhabitants, I’m ok with it 8)
in reply to: Denton Hills, PA shoot #46045Found a place at Allegheny River Campgrounds…seems nice, and about 10 minutes away….looking forward to it ❗
Hi Troy :!::!::D
Just one friend saying hi to another 😉
Hey Troy
How do the rest of us get one :!::?::wink:
That’s beautiful.
in reply to: SBD bowstrings? #22813Question Dave and Scout (and anyone else!)
Looking at SBD site, how is ASL (actual string length) measured?
I get the top of the top loop to the bottom of the bottom loop when hung off a nail BUT what about twist:?:
Do you untwist to degree possible then measure or do u just measure as it “comes off the bow” ❓ 🙄
in reply to: New longbow! #22787First attempt :?::!::shock:
That’s a beauty for a seasoned bowyer….that’s a helluva first attempt:D
