I’m a little late to the conversation but I shoot left handed and am left eye dominant.  I started shooting a right handed bow when I was 10 (?) simply because that’s what I found in my dads garage.  When I enlisted in the Army I discovered that I was left eye dominant.  Took me a few years but I eventually bought a left handed bow.  I had always been a few inches left of where I was “looking”.  When I started shooting lefty and anchoring closer to the dominant eye I obviously improved.  Some say you don’t have to switch, that it doesn’t matter since we’re not “aiming.  I say switch.

My son and I discovered ice fishing! Who knew sitting on a bucket staring at a 7″ inch whole in the ice could be so much fun? But those blue gills, crappie and perch sure do taste delicious with some hush puppies on the side. I found a new reason to appreciate 20″ inches of ice on the water.

It certainly makes me proud to have taken my one and only deer on public land. This video made my stomach turn.

We have a similiar mentality at the firehouse. If you grab the power saw grab the sledge or axe also, they always start! I too prefer my bows over the shotgun.

Nice hunting everyone! I hope to add to this thread, going out Monday after a snow storm and cold front roll through on Sunday. Season ends the 20th in Illinois. Time is running out…

I don’t make my own strings, yet. But it seems that B-50, B-55 and B-500 are the popular ones. I’ve read that the B-50 stretches, B-55 stretches less and the B-500 stretches even less. Let us know how the building goes.

For the coming season I’ve been practicing with my Osage bow. I have to keep my shots at 10-15 yards. I’ve made longer ones at the range, but I’m not consistant. With my recurve I can reach out a little further and still be consistant. Like others on here, I know it when I see it. Passeed up several shot’s last year because it just wasn’t right.

Thank you for the kind woeds gentlemen. Cyberscout, I’ll be hunting around Curtis and Brady in Hayes/Lincoln counties. It’s about 1/2 hour south and east from North Platte. The only part I’m not looking forward to is the solo drive from here to there. Otherwise, can’t wait!

Here are the final pics of my first completed osage longbow. It’s 66″ from tip to tip. It pulls 45# @ 28″. I put a brown paper backing on it, stained antique walnut. Leather wrap is from a garage sale leather jacket I bought and cut up. The arrows are tapered douglas fir tipped with two blade zwickey’s.

The string is from Josh Sowerby of Oliver Stacy string’s. It really bring’s the project together in my opinion. Beaver fur silencer’s and pheasant feather (wind indicator) I added.

Hoping to get close enough to a mule deer this coming Sept. on my grandmother’s land in south western NE. Hopefully I can pull it all together.

                      Enjoy!

My first “trip” to hunt turkeys was with a quiver that held 6 arrows. I got 5 shots and missed all of them. The pressure was on me like never before. I was out west in Nebraska and every arrow I shot that missed sailed over the turkey’s back and into canyon’s (There’s 5 WW broadheads in SW NE if you can find ’em they’re yours). I searched for about 2-3 hours for the first 2 and then gave up after that. So, the following year I had one dozen arrows ready for business. But, I also learned that I needed to practice a lot! So, I’m a better shooter now, I carry 3 arrows with broadheads, 1 blunt for stumping/keeping muscles warm. But, I also have some backups in the van or motel. I never want to be looking at my last arrow and feeling that pressure again!

I will second the above advice about checking your eye dominance. I am left eye dominant but right handed. Once I switched to shooting my accuracy improved for sure. I was always 3-4 inches off my “spot”. Now I know if I miss it’s my concentration/release/follow through. Check it out, may be your problem. Good luck and stick with it!

Thanks for the kind words men. It shoots good as far as I’m concerned. My arrows that I have are over spined for sure. I’m assuming that’s why they drop and go right (I am a lefty shooter). Either that or the nock point needed adjusting, which I did, just haven’t shot since then.

I need to order some wood shafts that are spined properly then we’ll go from there. It is fun though to pull it back let ’em fly.

Nebraska’s opener is right around the corner. Gotta practice…

Round #2, had to do some scraping after I found out my wife’s blazer needs a new fuel pump, arghhh! Let me know how it looks. Thanks.

Thanks to those that gave their advice. It seems as though you’re all on the same page.

I have been e-mailing with Clay and actually following his awesome 3 part series on youtube. He made it look so dog gone easy. I’m hoping he sees this thread and has a chance to shime in.

I am holding at 60 lbs right now so I think I may be alright to scrape a little mid-limb to tips. In fact Clay already commented once that the top limb needed it more than the bottom. And yes the top is longer than the bottom. By about 2.5-3 inches.

Well, easy does it. Thanks for the input!

Thank you for your opinion on the bow. It’s 66″ from tip to tip. Right now it’s about 60# @ 28″. The limb’s are 1 3/4 inches wide at the fades and then they taper down to 1/2 inch at the tips. The tips are a little wider than that but I’m trying to save the pretty work till I know I have a good bow.
