in reply to: …been a long time comin' #10053
Awesome job man. Congratulations.
in reply to: Why do I love archery #63153Very well said Andrew. I too have that connection. Sometimes in archery, if we try too hard and don’t be still and let go, we will miss the mark, as in life.
in reply to: how many arrows for hunting? #63120This sseason I went to four broadheads only. I had six but I recently lost them. The last two years I carried a couple small game heads also but I decided to not “mess up” any opportunities at deer. We’ll see.
in reply to: Good Friend Gets His First! #55381Congratulations on such an awesome deer. I killed my first deer ever last year using a recurve and it’s an incredible feeling. I have “family” in the Statesboro, Ga area. They are from the Stalcup family. Again congrats.
in reply to: A little bowfishing film. #39364I can see how your videos have progressed over the last year. Nice work.
in reply to: "Elevated" rest.. #35561As far as the high spot or contact point for the arrow, my understanding is you should have it make contact directly above the deepest part of the handle. If not it can cause problems.
in reply to: KME Broadhead sharpener, Single Bevel? #54071I use a Lansky set that was my Fathers. When I take my time, I can get my Broadheads shaving sharp. I use the stones all the way down to ultra fine, which is 1000 grit. The last stone polishes the edge. I even use a jewelers magnifying glass to look at the edge. The broadheads I use are Bear Razorheads that were also my Fathers. I’m looking forward to the upcoming deer season since I upped the weight to 250 grains.
in reply to: How many bows do you have? #52996I own three recurves:
Bear Super Magnum 48″ 48#
Ben Pearson Mustang 58″ 50#
unknown manufacturer 62″ 50#
I also have a loaner recurve from my Brother in law. This is the one I took my first deer with, this year:
Shakespeare Ocala 60″ 50#
I also have a Black Widow recurve that was my Fathers that delaminated. I was devastated. 60″ 49#
in reply to: Personal Philosophies #49188I just turned 46 a few days ago and this is only my second season hunting. I have fished my entire life without trying hunting. My Father passed away eight years ago and I got his two recurves a few years back. I practiced a lot and became confident enough to take the required hunter safety class and to get my license. I planned to take my first deer with my Fathers Black Widow recurve but when it came apart while practicing about a month and a half before the season started this year I thought it was over. My brother in law loaned me his Shakespeare recurve to use this season. He is a compound shooter but my Dad had picked this bow out for my sister to give to him many years ago. I took my first deer this season in October with the very bow that my Dad had chosen. When I go out into the woods with this bow in my hand I feel the connection with my Dad. I love the simplicity of stick and string.
in reply to: Help with old bow #44698The brace height is typically measured at the deepest point of the grip. So, if you are trying to match a set brace height that is recommended, you will be way off. As far as twisting the string, one end of the string has a larger loop than the other. You will remove one end of the string and twist it while the other end stays on the bow. Twisting the string shorter will increase the brace height. I just recently made up a new set of arrows trying to increase my front of center. I bare tuned my arrows and achieved 25%. All the while tightening my groups considerably. You can find information on this forum about bare shaft tuning.
in reply to: DIY Back Quiver #36965Check back in the forum for a build of a St. Charles style back quiver by Duncan. His build was very informative and accurate, seeing how I own an original. His post started on Nov. 4th.
in reply to: Meat in the Freezer #11475Being that I am new to hunting and since I took my first deer this season, I wasn’t so sure about processing her myself. I did field dress her and remove the tenderloins. We ate them that night and they were delicious. I took her to a processor and had them finish her. The question that I have is, do y’all age your venison or do you process it right away? I have read a lot on this and I’m not sure which is correct.
in reply to: Let's build a St. Charles Quiver #58852Duncan, I believe mine is gen 2. The cover is smooth leather. I read that it is suppose to be Elk. As you can see, the bottom is aluminum with a wood back support. The ads that I have seen look pretty cool.
in reply to: Let's build a St. Charles Quiver #54594I have an original St. Charles Quiver that was my Fathers. The cool thing is that my carbon arrows fit perfectly. I considered using it for hunting, but I use a backpack and it would be difficult to use them both. I may just have to give it a try before this season is over.
in reply to: Bear kills deer #31148That is a huge six point buck. Congratulations on your deer. Way to involve the family.
