in reply to: Leaving you with regret….. #28971
My thoughts are with you and your family, my dad used to say, “it’s darkest before the dawn”…hope your sun rises soon.
in reply to: A few things I've learned #59439After not hearing an Elk or Deer for a day or so of hunting, don’t actually hear an animal and talk yourself into believing that it “couldn’t” be an Elk or Deer because you haven’t heard one while on this hunting trip. Treat every noise and sense as if it IS the real thing until determined otherwise. This informational item adds no weight to your pack!
Idabowin reply to: Happy Birthday, David Petersen! #48238Dave, belated Happy Birthday! Hope it was a good one, beats the alternative….no birthdays! Stay strong in mind and body and look forward to reading more of your wisdom.
Billin reply to: javalina outfit #16567Turtle,
Check with Kent Ostrem from Mahaska bows, he offers a Javilina hunt in West Texas from January to May. http://www.mahaskacustombows.com
Billin reply to: Getting started again #58360Hunter 1,
Welcome to the site, we just might learn something from you too:)
Billin reply to: Points vs. random drawing hunts #55103Thanks to all who have and will continue to post on this topic. I must say that this topic was brought up on another site and it quickly got ugly. Once again, I’m sure glad to be here on Tradbow!
Here in Idaho we use the “random” method for hunting tags (no points). It seems to work fine but I have been accruing points in Utah for Elk and do see light at the end of the tunnel, something that some random hunts here in Idaho don’t offer. Like Dave said, this is just the tip of the iceberg as so many variables come into play and effect the different methods of drawing.
Billin reply to: Hunting fitness #44760Most of us have a formula that works for “us” and for those who don’t, I’d be glad to assist in any way you’d like. We’re about five months out from Elk and Deer season, this is a great time to get something started (if you haven’t already) so that it’s not such a cram as the season approaches. It’s kinda like whitewater rafting, you can paddle once early-on before you get to the rapid to set your course, or you can wait until you’re on top of the rapid and paddle your butt off and hope the giant wave doesn’t flip ya! It’s easier to start now.
Billin reply to: The ugliest moccasins ever! #41543Chris,
Those are the fugliest mocs I’ve seen but like many things in nature that don’t look too nice, I think they would be a pleasure to slip into. So simple and with a few mods. for added durability and comfort, I’d order a pair (size 10.5)! In regard to waterproofing, how about Bee’s wax rubbed into the leather?
Billin reply to: Special Hunting Permits #39794Dave,
Gotta say it, I really dislike those ATV’s and think they shouldn’t be allowed during hunting season, that sucks that they ruined your Moose hunt. What’s the Timberline mule deer hunt? Is that an early season hunt, which zone? Sounds like your plate is full with all that you’re putting in for, good luck!
Billin reply to: New to archery #37293Jmed,
First of all, welcome to Tradbow! You might try looking at the classified sections of some of the other web sites if Tradbow doesn’t have what you need. Stickbow.com and Tradgang.com have extensive classified offerings and sometimes even have pictures. The prices seem fair and are often negotiable. Good luck on your search and let us know what you end up with.
Billin reply to: Texas Hog hunt #37271Great points by all! I guess the important thing, regardless of whether you agree or disagree to participate or be in close proximity to baiting hogs, is that an opportunity to hunt any method was available in an otherwise slow (for hunting) part of the year and that this hunt was relatively inexpensive (travel and 5 day out of state license). Another important part of this experience was meeting new hunting friends who were very welcoming. Next year I hope to return to Texas if finances permit and maybe I’ll bring home the bacon!
in reply to: Texas Hog hunt #35960By DIY, I mean not having to pay a ranch owner or tresspass fee, not paying a guide or anything like that. No, I don’t mean baiting but I mentioned in my initial thread, traveling to other parts of the country can be “interesting because of the local hunting cultures.” You picked up on that and yes, the local hunting culture does include baiting. How did I feel about that? Uncomfortable, because I don’t bait, I stalk. At the same time, I was a guest, an outsider, and observed the local culture and practices (baiting) but didn’t attempt to sway or change them. Puts ya in a quandry of sorts, not unlike some articles I’ve read here in TBM. I hope this experience opens up some good debate.
in reply to: Woodie Weights #46780I currently use them and have had no problem. I was glad to have found them since I needed more weight for my set up. Good luck to you.
