Nice curves.

in reply to: Need Encouragement #8052Been there done that. More with fly fishing than archery, but it is all the same. You are taking it FAR too serious. After all this is NOT life threatening. You are alone out there, don’t have to share the mistakes till you are ready. If you don’t make the mistakes you will not learn.
in reply to: First hunting setup #8001Been thinkin on this….
Last spring I made a dozen arrows. There was one psychotic, and one was severely depressed. So we are down to 10. As I practiced I noticed I didn’t always hit the bulls eye. Since there was no one there to blame, I decided to blame the arrows. MOST BE there were more mal adjusted arrows in there. So as I practiced I put a little dot on one of the fletches every time I hit the bulls eye. Actually I thought about naming the arrows, and writing everything down on a clip board, then thought about creating a database on my laptop, blah, blah, blah. Then decided the little dots were a LOT less work. So I shot the 10 arrows again, and again, and again… Making little dots every time an arrow hit within a 6″ circle.
The results were:
one arrow with 8 dots.
one 6
one 5
three 4
The rest had les than 4 dots, and one only had one dot. Keep in mind that the arrows LOOKED the same, weighed the same, same spine, blah, blah, blah… and had no observed personality disorders. All of which doesn’t matter. The brodheads are going on the six with at least 4 dots.
in reply to: First hunting setup #7817Not so sure I started out with all that much sanity, but I have all of the emergers, case shuck trailers, etc. up the ying yang. So I guess this is a comment with limited sanity. I DO think both posts are awesome. Just you make sure they shoot straight. As Grandma used to say “The proof is in the shooting.”
As far as the next few weeks go, stop in at a used book store (not cheap, frugal) and get a copy of WAR AND PEACE. Lots of words for a buck or two.
Raising children is the most important thing you will do in this life.. It will also be the hardest thing you ever do. PLEASE, keep it in that perspective. Didn’t get a fishing or hunting license for 10 years while raising my son. He didn’t want to go, and I didn’t have the time (a bit harder as a single parent), so I read books, tied flies, took him to soccer and baseball games. Most important thing is to be available, Brian is now 35, and has thanked me for being available, not much else, but he does appreciate the fact that I was in my room reading, and he could come in anytime (usually it was at 3:00 AM). Don’t give unasked for advise, just be there when he/she wants your advise. Print this thread and save it.
in reply to: MUSHROOM BILL #53392I’m sure I’ve seen more deer fishing than I ever will hunting. Don’t think they expect people to be walking in the river, and the sound of the river covers up any noise I made. Once I was within a few feet of two, that scared the living bleep out of me. Don’t know who was more scared, I swear I could have reached out and touched them.
in reply to: MUSHROOM BILL #53383There were times, up on a roof, when I was concentrating on work, and I suddenly looked up right into the eyes of someone who was watching me. Once it was into the binoculars of a lady in a second floor window across the street, other times into the binoculars, of some other contractor spying on me. Very common to look up and see the home owner walking out on his lawn to watch me, or ask a question. I surely didn’t hear them, nor did I see them out of my peripheral vision. Granted, since I was 30 or 40 feet off the ground I was hyper alert, but there is really no logical reason for me to look right in their eyes. I have no doubt that wildlife can do the same, since they are hyper alert 24/7. I have NOT noticed this ability when my life is NOT in danger. Only happened on the roof. Suspecting there is something that kicks in when we (mammals) are hyper alert. ColMike?? Aussie?? I don’t have the experience you do.
For the record, Bill is a very non threatening person, despite his 6’3″ stature, and size 10 shoes.
in reply to: Tree Saddle #53364Like R2 I “hung” in climbing belts on slate roofs for 15 years, and tried dozens of them to find one comfortable. I failed. What is more when you are sitting like that there is no air space between your butt and your jeans… That means COLD. I developed numerous clothing modifications to try to keep warm up there and always ended up with a cold butt, when I wasn’t literally sweating my butt off. When it was hot the belt restricted air circulation, and made it even hotter. Just like R2 said every part of the body was cramped somehow, and it always seemed like I couldn’t quite reach…

in reply to: My Version of Duncan's Quiver #47917I have a leather punch that I’ve had for ??? (too long) you could have borrowed. 😀
Not supposed to keep track of how much this stuff is costing. Throw out the receipt on the way out of the store.
in reply to: What would you do???? #46823I agree with JPC. Doesn’t smell right. If he can’t meet his commitment he should offer to return the deposit. You have a contract, and he is in default. You don’t KNOW that he is in the glue up stage, you don’t know a relative died, you only know what he has told you on the phone. When my son was in high school, he told his boss his grandmother died, so he could get time off to go to a concert. Since he had a new boss every year, his grandmother died three times. Right now Mom (the grandmother who died three times) is in a nursing home in New Hampshire and STILL thinks I need a haircut.
in reply to: My Version of Duncan's Quiver #46811Nice job, I think the scraps just might be more interesting than if you had bought one big piece of leather to make it with. Thinking of making one myself, just don’t think I have scraps as good as yours. 😀 And God knows I’m too frugal (not cheap, frugal) to go out and buy anything.
