This guy is one of my favorites. His book “Charcuterie” is great and his new one “Salumi” looks really good as well.

      Have fun!

A good tip is to weigh the breast after you rinse the salt. When it drops 30% of its weight, about a week, it’s ready.

Duck ‘prosciutto’ is amazing and easy to do with one or both breasts.

Cant really go wrong with any duck recipe in my opinion. For mallards my favorite is to marinate them with tangerines or soem type of citrus

If you cant get fresh tangerines where you’re at, the canned mandarin orange with some added lemon juice make a good substitute

        enjoy!

Great buck! Your winter courage is inspiring!

As for lion, i had it once and Im with David, not very good. Tasted like bad pork to me.

And the 225 penetration, I sank one up to the rim of the ferrule in a 4×4 yesterday while tuning. Totally missed the target. I think they are made from lightsabers and Guinness kegs. Cant wait to get a pig or a deer!

in reply to: Bows for kids… #51238

            Hey Alex

I work with kids at wilderness skills organization. One of my programs is making bows for kids.

I use maple boards usually but lots of woods will work.

For a 14 year old who is new I usually go with a 20# bow.

For a 5 year old, 10# can be too much some times and making a selfbow that light is tricky, but its not too tough.

So for the little one I usually make a 50inch bow that hits 10-12# @20″. The young ones, depending on height, tend to draw around 16 inches so the bow at that draw is usually <10#.

With wood bows for kids its a good idea to tiller it much longer than the intended drawlength and back it with something like rawhide. Kids are so tough on their toys, Id have a heart attack if a bow broke in a kids hands. Tiller the DL long to protect against the inevitable overdraws and back it.

For arrows the 3rivers ones are good as DWC said. You can also save a ton of money by picking out the clean 1/4″ poplar dowels or using whatever straight shoots, like cane, mulefat, willow, etc are in your area.

What kind of tree you got?

I’ve got hildebrand bookmarked as the place for Sitka spruce as well. Great to deal with.

David is spot on. Ill turn a dozen shafts and get them within 25gr. The best grouping 3 or 4 become my hunters.

The variables in organic materials can make for some fun surprises! Example: I made some bamboo arrows all with a 25gr variation. 3 hit consistently within 3 inches of each other… Two of them weigh 625 and the other weighs 602. I don’t get it either.

I try to keep mine within 25 grains. So the lightest might be 380 and the heaviest 405.

in reply to: Hardwood shafts? #37905

I’m using the 225 tuffhead field point. Three are shooting well at 31 7/8 and 70#. My bow is 51# and my draw is 29.5″.

Out at 20 yards they were about 2 inches nock high bare shaft. I fletched one and at 20 yards it looks dead on. Haven’t paper tuned yet.

According to the DSC this is too light of a spine but they are flying very well. Self nocks, no foreshafts.

Anyone tried bamboo arrows for HFOC? Im tuning a few right now coming in between 600 and 625 grains with 17% – 20% FOC TH field points.

This situation has nothing to do with the landowner wanting the deer to be shot. It has do with the landowner not knowing the seasons and her not wanting the gov’t to restrict what can be done on her land.

There are no complaints about the deer. She seems to be of the mindset that if its her land she can do whatever she pleases.

With that in mind, I don’t think depredation tags are the way to go. I think that educating her on game laws and deer biology would be more appropriate.

2 day horsepack into a Chilean valley to spend 10 days climbing. The gaucho helped us set camp and then left with the horses. Neither my climbing partner nor I packed the ropes.

Is that a wood shaft? If so, what spine and wood species?
