So do I. I got 4 boys and 1 girl, and so far they all like to come out shooting with me. Just need to get mama into it.

I kinda figured as much from the research I’ve been doing. I hate the thought of not being prepared and losing an animal because of it. I do intend on purchasing a heavier bow in the next couple of months. Like I said, got a bit of time before I can actually go on the hunt. I did not know about the vitals though. Good info, thank you. If you can think of anything else, please let me know. I appreciate any input I can get.

Never mind. I guess if I read a little deeper, I would have gotten my awnser.

Where does the Trad expo west happen at and when? Being new to this stuff, I went to the International Sportsmans Expo here in Denver, and was disapointed with the lack of traditional Archery exibits.

If you are in Colorado, Tom and the boys at Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear (RMS Gear) are great. Great selection of bows and equipment to include maintenance and they are friendly and professional. They are very passionate about traditional archery and bow hunting.

Gotta remember alot of these guys check this on the fly when they only got a few minutes to spare (myself being one of them). Thank you for the shout out though! Being a Soldier can at times be a rough and thankless job, but if it wasn’t hard everyone would do it. I miss out on a lot of hunting due to obligations to the Army, but with a current duty station change I am actually getting a chance to plan a hunt in New Mexico and start planning for a Elk hunt in colorado next year! This will be my first hunt ever with traditional tackle. Planning it is almost as fun as doing it!
To all those Vets and those currently serving, thank you.

Just want to make sure I am getting proper instruction for my dollars.

There is no need to purchase anything unless you want to. Most of the things you need you can find in his segment of youtube videos. Just watch and go out to the woods for practical application, practice and perfect your woodsman and bushcraft skills.

If you want purchase it that is up to you, but I tend to go cost effective for now.

Again, this is why I love this site. I got up this morning wondering how I was gonna figure out what arrows to get and how to determine it. Thank you again gentlemen.

I watch a lot of his youtube videos. I haven’t actually ordered or read any of his stuff.

I saw this guy on Discovery Channel on a show called dual survivor, researched him and found his site. Most of this stuff you can find in different books, military training, and things like that, but he does have some good “common man” info. He is a traditional bowhunter, and shows you how to be prepared. Fire, Shelter, water, food, all things needed if ever in a survival situation and he shows how to do them in videos, and shows you how to be cost effective about it. What I enjoy about it is I can take and use what info I need and the rest, well,,, it’s entertaining at least.
                        Hope it helps.

My next goals are to become proficient with a compass, and fire starting with a flint n steel.
How would you folks recommend I go about learning these new skills? The areas I frequent are thick forest made up mostly of Aspen, Alder, and Spruce, with little to no land marks to speak of. What type of compass would be best suited for this type of terrain, and do you know of any literature that might guide me in its use? Any recommendations for a good carry with fuel source to use with the flint n steel? I have heard wax cardboard is best, but I would like to know what you folks use.
I would also like to know what other skills have you found to be useful or even absolutely necessary when roaming around the woods? And perhaps you know of some good reading in this field of interest that you could share?

I have to admit, the shows are what got me interested in bows in the first place. I ran out and bought the first used lefty compound I could find. I practiced as much as I could until I could hit a tight shot group at 60 yards (or as tight as you could get at 60). I was dieing for hunting season.
But something just didn’t feel right. Those shows didn’t express the same feelings I felt when my dad would take me to the woods when I was a kid. Or how I felt when I would spend endless hours in them by myself or with my best friend (my lab/husky mix). We didn’t have all that scent stuff or expensive camo or anything like that.
When I found my father-in-laws old recurve in the shed, things changed. This, simple, light, classic stick felt right. It gives me that feeling I felt when I was a kid in the woods, like, I BELONG HERE!
Now, that compound is for sale on craigslist. The proceeds will get me a nice lefty longbow, Then its off to the woods to hunt some stumps, and as my skills grow, maybe something bigger, and tastier!
I am thankful for this site, and the people who use it. I have a lot to learn, and you guys are here for me and don’t even know it. Thanks.

Well, I suppose I should jump in here.

My name is Shawn and I’m new to Traditional archery. I’m a lefty forming bad habits by shooting a right handed Browning. I started with a compound but found the Browning Cobra in my shed (that belonged to my father-in-law)so I started shooting it and love it.
I’ve been married for just over 10 years and have 4 sons and 1 daughter. My oldest who’s 10 is starting to shoot with me also. Hopefully I can pass the tradition on.
I serve in the Army and will till they tell me I have to retire. I love the places I go and people I meet. I have been deployed to Mosul, Iraq which is the biblical city of Nineveh. Was there just shy of 15 months. Should be going to Afghanistan early next year, and will take my bow with me. For now I will continue to train the next generation of soldiers here at Ft. Jackson.
I’m also a sinner saved by God’s grace through His son’s sacrifice on the cross. Been that way almost 10 years now, with the help of my wife who assisted in leading me to Christ. I’m not very good a being a Christian I admit, but I will always follow.
I love the outdoors and spending time in God’s creation.

                              Shawn

I am new to traditional archery, and hunting as well. I’m 27 years old, married for the past 4 years, have a 2 year old son and another baby due at the end of April.
I started hunting as soon as I could walk in the woods w/ my dad. started bowhunting when I was 14. When I turned 19 IO enlisted in the marine corps where I served two tours in Iraq. On my second tour, I was shot with an RPG and lost my right arm and leg. I tried getting back into hunting right afterwords w/ little success. Tried hunting w/ a crossbow, but I can’t get a permit in new york state. So…. I “invented” my own release and taught myself to shoot a bow right handed. ( was originally a lefty). I have had some success w/ my compound so far, taking 3 bucks and 2 doe in the past 3 years. Last year got an old recurve from a friend and have been plinking away. have only gone turkey hunting w/ it so far and haven’t gotten a shot, but i love shooting it, even more than my compound.

I tell ya brother, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! I did 4 years in the Navy, got out for 10, and now I’m in the Army. I only done one deployment to Iraq, up there in Mosul. I’m a Drill Sergeant right now, but should be going to Afghanistan Early next year. Again, thank you and God Bless you for your service.
