I’m inclined to agree with Mr. Medred and Mr. Ek. Krakauer is a good writer who’s skill was wasted on this story.

Wooo hoooo!
in reply to: Fred Bears Memories of the Hunt. #25944Lovely piece.
in reply to: Please introduce yourselves, I'll start #23497I live on an island in Puget Sound. We have ten acres of mixed forest with a few dogs, goats, chickens and cats running about the place.
I shot a bow rather poorly as a kid and now shoot one poorly as an old fart. Getting a little better though.
With regular practice and some help from friends and you folks, I hope to get good enough to hunt with confidence.
in reply to: Good for Illinois ?? #15640I think that it important to note that the state of Illinois only restricted “new” captive hunting facilities. That sounds like the old split the baby method of appeasement. It would have been so much more impressive had they closed all existing facilities as well.
I also think hell is much too pleasant a place for the purveyors of and participants in “confined hunting facilities” not to put too fine a point on it.
in reply to: What's in a Name? #15571The guys I used to work with called me “gorilla belly” probably because of my kind and temperate nature. I chose to use my own name cause I don’t forget it too often …yet.
Cheers,
Gary
in reply to: Music to "fall" For #15562Vintage Al Green would be good. It’d be hard to hear over the outboard though.

I try to practice archery everyday after the animals and my 92 year old mother-in-law are all cared for and then a walk through my woods. I have a few firearms I enjoy, but they have taken a back seat to archery for now. My wife makes a number of products from our goat’s milk that I help in a small way with. Living on a small island as we do there is always a need to help out in community stuff. I read a lot and write poems now and then. I’ve always had a passion for pot/point hunting, but haven’t indulged in it here. I plan to putt over to the next island in my skiff this spring and start scouting for good a few good spots to hunt from come deer season. Oh, I also help a friend make 3 or 4 hundred gallons of cider every fall and 2or 3 hundred gallons of sauerkraut that we give away to other islanders. We smoke a lot of salmon too.
in reply to: The Trad Knife Thread #39426My wife and I carry Opinel No 7’s and I have two No 9’s that I use to trim my goats hooves with. All are carbone blades.
They hold an edge pretty well and work great as long as I don’t get them too wet, then they become a sheath knife for a while until they dry out.
Good thread!
in reply to: Ancient Edges #16531I have a collection of Stone artifacts I found on my grandfathers place in northern Arkansas when I was a kid.
I never made an arrow with one, but I did make a tomahawk with an especially large and beautiful one that I lost.
I’ve made a few points but never was good enough to duplicate the points used by the norther California tribes for bear and such. I worked on a site in school and did some survey digs for EIR reports for developers. I got to find and catalog points, pot shards and one turtle amulet..no, another guy found it, but I got to hold it in my hand and look at it for awhile. Finding this old stuff whether it was prehistoric or not was always an amazing thing. Never thought to hunt with one though.
Great thread!

in reply to: what bow now? #10571Welcome aboard! All I can say is that your first two steps are good ones. I’ve only been around a short while, but there are a lot of nice folks willing to share the wealth of knowledge they’ve gathered over the years with you.
My older brother found a nice old Bear Kodiak at a flea market for $10. I went the other way and ordered a custom Java Man longbow that should get here some time in the spring.
There’ll be folks that know a lot more than me about good choices for you along directly.
Good luck,
Gary Davis
in reply to: Facial Recognition #10350It’s true that corvids are amazing. An off islander had dropped a tree that had a nest of crowlets in it and he took them to a friends place and one actually survived and lived with them for over two years. One day the same logger came by to check on the young survivor and it attacked him furiously and it had never shown any sign of aggression towards a human previously.
I had a dog that always barked at deer that came into our clearing until he saw my wife watering a patch of grass for them and never he never barked at another one.
The mask test might be a good one,but then, the deer that know you might just think you had a hard night out on the town
the night before(grin).
in reply to: 1st Tradbow Harvest #10323Congratulations! That’s a beautiful buck. Inspiring story as well.
Thanks,
