in reply to: ARROW SELECTION #12034

Unfortunetly, for me much of my bowhunting career has been trial and error when it comes to what works best. I currently shoot a 54# @ 27in Custom Recurve from Jim Belcher. I shoot Cabelas carbon extreme arrows with 100 grain brass inserts and a 200 grain Abowyer Javelena lite broadhead and field point. I shoot either 5″ or 5.5″ fletchings. That gives me a 575 grain arrow with good FOC. I have spent alot of money on broadheads and will be changing to a brown bear by abowyer because of hissing with the Javelenia lite. I have also shot wensel woodsmans, zwickey’s eskimo and no mercies. My biggest issue has been finding a broadhead I can sharpen and that meets my weight requirment and doesn’t hiss or whisle. So although you maynot have to experiment as much as me, you will have to do a little to find out what shoots best for you. Start with shaft selection and then tune the shaft to your bow. Once you have a good flying bare shaft then you can select everything else.

The Ashby library has an interesting article about super short feathers and using pinstriping tape in order to disrupt the air to increase the feather control effect. The longer the arrow the more the feathers have a steering effect. I am experimenting with shorter and shorter feathers and still get good arrow flight. I am down to 4″ feathers and am going to try Razor feathers that are 2.5 inches and put a strip of pinstriping 1/4″ inch in front.

I have a 54# Jim Belcher patriot T/D recurve SSR. I love the ability to take it down and pack it in my suitcase. It shoots fantastic and looks even better.

Jesse, God made the Wild Boar for Trad-bowhunters, No limit, No season, Just hunt 😀

Kingwouldbe: Where are you killing hogs like that. I did a lot of hunting in Georgia and the biggest I got was a 300lb boar. Your right about the tackle, the grissle plate on a big hog can stop a bullet from a 30/30.

I have the Abowyer head that is shaped similar and am having a problem with whistling. Do the Massai have the same problem? If not please include me in the drawing as I have not been satified with the no mercy or abowyer heads.

Call Jim Belcher at http://WWW.belcherbows.com. He has a bow hospital and maybe able to fix your problem. He was able to straighten a horribley bent bow I bought off the internet and is now building me a custom recurve.
