in reply to: recurve bows #44451
RJS,
If you are in the East, check out Leon Stewart’s bows. He’s a terrific craftsman and very active in the PA Longbow Association. Mine’s a longbow, but he makes all styles. Good luck in your search. best, dwc
Arne,
Yes, this helps a lot. I appreciate you taking the time to write it down for me. It’s interesting stuff.
best, david
Arne,
I understand what stacking feels like, but what is it and what is it caused by? thanks, dwc
in reply to: End of Season #36576P, you don’t owe anybody anything the way you’ve hunted. I also applaud you for using the gifts of the highway to fill the freezer. Two years ago we would have gone without venison had it not been for some roadkill donated by a friend. Yesterday, I stood in a stand for 5 hours. I only had the odd hours of 11:30 to 4:30, but wanted to get out when it might be the last opportunity. I was tempted to take my flinklock for a walk up to some area where I might find more deer, but decided to stick to the bow in a spot I had a stand set up. The set-up is good, I think, but not yesterday.
In the end, when the season is over, you can look back at why you didn’t get out where you didn’t put the stand or look back and remember watching that little vole run around on the snow under the stand. Choose beauty every time. dwc
in reply to: End of Season #36526It is a bit of post season let down. There’s the build-up and the time out, then, well, the farewell. Agreed that opening it up all year would in some case diminish all of that to some degree. It’s the ride that’s part of the excitement. Tell the truth, I wouldn’t trade it.
We’re short on cottontails here. Plenty of squirrels. Those seasons are open into February. I’m sure I’ll get out some for tree rats to break up the work schedule. I’d love to go to Kazoo sometime. It’s a 10 hour drive from here, which means a couple hundred in gas alone out and back. I see that it starts in two weeks. Well, stranger things have happened, but I doubt I’ll make the run this year. I think it would be a fun trip with an opportunity to meet some of the famous and infamous!
All the best, d

in reply to: Coyote on Deer #35158When I go, I want to come back as a varmint. Seems like everything but a varmint can be hunted into extinction. Crows are tough, coyotes are tough, can’t get rid of roaches. Being a varmint is the life for me! dwc

in reply to: Coyote on Deer #34780Doc,
That does make sense. I also wondered that with healthier, bigger deer, does will be more likely than ever to have twins and even triplets. So there’s more left over for the coyote. dwc
I’ve seen whitetail twice here in Eastern PA, but both while driving and they were kind enough to stay off my bumper. A friend saw one in the area this year, but only once, and again, not while hunting.
Bad luck to shoot a pie-bald? That’s like saying it’s bad luck to pick up a penny face down. Anytime you find money (or meat), it’s good luck! dwc
in reply to: Noteable Quotes! #34186Dave,
I’m not sure I’d recognize Prine if he was sitting next to me. Sometimes that’s a good thing when you like an artist’s work. He’s a great story teller and I like his sense of humor. Dear Abby is a great one, full of fun with a point. Prine’s stories pass my personal most important test, they’re believable.
I just looked up Inspite of Ourselves, Prine’s duet with Iris DeMent on the tube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5axlwCBXC8 , and yes, he’s got some hairdo!
All the best. dwc
ps. keep us posted on your next work. peace, dwc
