That’s a relief that I won’t have to put my woolies on to mow!
When I started bowhunting several years ago I bought Columbia Gallatin Range Wool pants and coat. I thought about getting the bibs and probably should have, but this outfit works great and didn’t break the bank. Merino wool undies and an old llbean rag sweater and a wool scarf keeps me pretty toastie. The Gallatin range coat is heavy, but I can shoot in it easily. I took a two inch strip off the pant cuffs, sewed on some velcro and wear that around my left upper arm to make sure the sleeve doesn’t get in the way. Works great. Have fun and stay warm! best, dwc
Hi Folks,
It took me a few days to double check my notes, but here’s my stats.
Leon Stewart, LS Slammer Special R/D longbow
62″, 46# @ 28
Don’t know my draw length.
Beman Bowhunter 400 shafts
30′ long
50 gr. brass insert
75 gr steel adapter
225 gr Tuffhead
4 x 3 parabolic or AA style cut
Total weight 635 gr.
FOC is 27.9 according to Joe’s (and Alaskabowhunting.com ) calculator
I set up my field points and judo stumpers to match this set-up.
With the help of Troy Breeding, I bare shaft tuned a couple years ago and this fall I shot through paper to check and they were nice round little holes in the paper.
Only one small doe so far with this set-up. A shot through the heart at about 12-13 yards. She continued to walk about 25 or 30 yards and fell over. The arrow was buried 5″ into the stoney, dirt hillside beyond the deer.
I’ll stick with this set-up. The shafts are among the cheapest out there and they fly nice and seem to hold up quite well. I break a shaft or two a year stumping and I shoot almost every day. I do bend a judo head now and then and occasionally bend a steel insert. The shafts only seem to break after a dramatic side-swipe after bouncing off the side of a sapling sideways into another tree. I guess I need to shoot straighter.
I hand sharpen my heads for now, but am able to get them shaving sharp. Maybe a KME in the future, but a flat stone and leather works for now.
Thanks for this thread, Joe!
All the best, dwc

in reply to: bodnik bows #50374Thanks for this post. It helped me solve a problem that has to do with reindeer and a southpaw spouse. The nice people at KK were very helpful today so i put in an order for a whole kit. Thanks for posting your comments on the bodniks. Much appreciated. Best, dwc

Just a dusting here, but it was nice. It was enough to add some white to the ground to make things more visible. Seed the lawn? I didn’t even mow for the last time yet! I got behind on cutting firewood, so the grass was on its own. I might go out with the rifle in the second week, as I did the last two years when the freezer was still empty, but I’m very tempted to stick with the bow. I should have some good spots to hunt with a bow that I wouldn’t hunt with a rifle anyway. The deer might be in there more as the woods gets more populated in the orange season. With some luck I’ll get more time to get out in the woods than I have earlier.
I always enjoy the late season, too. That was my intro to trad hunting when I built a flinter and started hunting the winter season. It’s a great time of year.
Keep us posted on your progress. best, dwc

Sounds like a nice time out. Yesterday morning I got out for the last few hours of my archery season. Just a few minutes on the stand I had two bald eagles fly sid-by-side right over me, squawking away at each other. Two doe, about 70 down the hill were moving quickly until they came to where I walked up the hill and hit the brakes. They went back the way the came and I was hoping they’d circle around and pay me a visit, but it wasn’t in the cards.
Two weeks of the regular season and then the late season after Christmas to look forward to.
All the best, dwc

in reply to: Arrows and Snow #49054Paleo, you’ll get good at calling your shots and finding tiny holes in the snow beyond your intended target. Find the worm hole in the snow then rake it with a spare arrow a few feet beyond. Its just another form of tracking. Have fun. Dwc
in reply to: Sloooow Start, but Great Evening #47633Sitting here waiting for breakfast to settle in before my last morning in the woods for archery season. I can count the hours I’ve been able to get into the woods on my fingers, but it’s been fun so far. Had a spike come within 10-12 years last night. I really tried to get those spikes to either grow or shrink, but they didn’t budge. Nice to watch an animal up so close. I saw two larger bucks, too, but at a distance. Nice and chilly here this morning. All the best, dwc
in reply to: Finally—back in the fold #47627Hey Doc,
Good to see your name pop up. Getting settled will keep you busy enough, I’m sure. There’s good advice in taking the time to find the landowners and do some scouting. Lucky you to have a little snow on the ground! best, dwc
in reply to: Feeling Weird #47625I have a few stands up with the idea of a safe place to bowhunt during the rifle season. They are place in areas I know deer run to when things heat up in the woods. I’m not opposed to the rifle and killed my last two deer with one, but it really started to feel like cheating last year. dwc
in reply to: Unionsuits #46082Paleo, I just hope for your family’s sake you keep the hatch buttoned! dwc
