in reply to: DR.ED ASHBY BOW GIVEAWAY #15241
Just took a few minutes to enjoy Jonathan’s story. It’s well worth the few minutes it’ll take to read it. Congratulations on a story well told and a bow hard pulled!! Best, dwc
in reply to: Best target #48021I Have three types that I use. I set up bales, a la Graf, and it works well. I hang the stall matt so it swings and that scrubs off some energy. I also use feed bags stuffed with worn out tarps. Again, if they hang and swing the arrows don’t penetrate as far. I tried this set up with grocery bags but they punch out the back and make the yard look like a wally world parking lot. Lastly, I use a carboard box full of catalogs for my broadhead practice. When the face starts getting shot out just add some duct tape. Steve’s right. The less you hit them, the longer they last. Dwc
in reply to: Showdown of the Small Game Heads! #47930When I see a video or read about folks getting all those shots at grouse I just want to drool. I see so few grouse around here anymore I won’t even hunt them. Not that my wing shot ever threatened the population, even with a 20 ga. Just a little jealous! Dc
in reply to: What ya got goin? #26505DE, welcome back! Raising your daughter on fresh trout seems like a fine idea. Good luck on the phd, too.
R2, if you do fall in a cattle wallow, send photos! Dwc
in reply to: Mountain Cuisine? #14686Ed, ever hear your hiking buddies say, “here comes fruitcake?” Dwc
in reply to: The Trade-Off #31340JPC said it well. In my experience you won’t find your accuracy suffers at hunting ranges. I practice up to 20 yards regularly and 40 yards once in a while. At 40 yards I have quite an parabola and I actually use the tip of the arrow to sight. At 20 and under I’m either having a good day or not.
If I were to pursue 3D I think it would benefit to create a special set up. As a hunter, I want to stay as consistent as possible all year. I admire guys who can shoot multiple set ups well.
Lots of stuff I don’t hear anymore my wife says.
Never occurred to me it might be what she’s sayin. Never occurs to her either.
R2, I went to get my ears checked last year and found out that selective hearing was a real audio thing before it was a joke. You might know which kind of selective hearing you have if you don’t hear the words, but hear the frying pan coming.
Paleo,
If I’m in a tree, which is most of the time, I have a watch that I lay down on the deck of the stand. I can see it at a glance and keeps me from moving my hands to see the time. I’d like to say I can forget about the time, but having the watch actually helps me relax. I also like to keep a rough tab on what happens at about what time. I’m more worried a deer will hear my stomach rumbling that my watch ticking! best, dwc
in reply to: Re-Thinking old Thoughts on Woodies #36238We had a big Norway Spruce that blew down in my dad’s yard sawed into boards to build a tree house. I was amazed how light the boards are and how rigid they seem. I’m interested to hear how it works for arrows. Thanks dwc
in reply to: Would you like some muktuk with that moose meat? #33256I hope NC can get done by themselves, as they’re sort of alone out there. Dc

in reply to: 10 minutes to just kick back.. Enjoy #49052Beautiful. For some reason I kinda felt like the old man in Soylent Green, but it’s very beautiful and very relaxing. Thanks, dwc
in reply to: Dr ED ASHBY PERSONAL BOW GIVE AWAY #30408Joe,
I submitted my story this morning and when I went in to see how to submit I also saw that I missed the deadline by a week. Heck of a thing for an old (read that experienced ) news photographer to do! Anyway, the point is to share a story and I enjoyed putting it together. All the best to you, David
in reply to: Deer photos #28922The beauty of these animals will never leave me. I saw a few together yesterday morning and they are really looking scraggly with the winter coat coming off, but just amazing animals. Thanks for posting the photos. best, dwc
in reply to: help about FOC EFOC or UFOC #14229Hi Dom, well, I don’t have any experience with an animal that size, but I’ll try to stir the pot here to get you some more qualified responses. I think with the 300 up front you would be safe. I read that it might be on the bottom end of good, but folks hunted those deer with less foc. What’s fhe total weight of the arrow you plan to build?
I believe the proper order of things for penetration is something like this; straight arrow flight, sharp blades, weight of arrow and then increased foc. Of course, accuracy should have been the first thing. Let us know how you make out. Best dwc
