in reply to: Thinking of getting a custom bow #35203
Ditto to what the others said. It’s an adventure, in a good way. My bowyer, Leon Stewart, discussed the types of bows and advantages of construction, weight, length, etc. We also looked at wood choices and discussed advantages of performace with wood types. The process was a lot of fun for me and I picked up somethings about shooting that really helped. I ended up shooting my old Browning Wasp much better while waiting for my Slammer to be finished.
I enjoyed the process so much, I’d be happy to do it again, except that this bow should last me a lifetime for what I am hunting. If I get a chance to hunt elk or other large game, maybe I’ll look into a heavier bow, but I’m probably set.
Enjoy. dwcin reply to: Hunting and Camp chair #35009Very cool. Thanks for posting the photos. Good post season project to have for the late season. Thanks! dwc
in reply to: St Charles Style quiver #33770How about a build along for that seat, too?? thanks! dwc
in reply to: Squirrels 4 Duncan 0 #33765I’m with Steve. I’m still looking for venison, antlered or not. I think pound for pound I saw as many squirrels this year as deer. Archery for deer is over in a week, then I’ll chase the squirrels.
in reply to: Getting started on making wooden arrows #31004I can vouch for Steve. I’m no expert, but I’ve been making or assembling my own arrows almost from the start. I had a JoJan six jig, but sold that and bought a Pro-Fletcher. I use the fletching tape, so I don’t have to wait for the glue to dry. It works great. I know some folks use the more inexpensive Bohning jig and say it works just as well. I just follow the 3Rivers instructions and I have to beat up an arrow pretty hard for pretty long to loose a feather. It only takes about 15 minutes to fletch a shaft and you can vary the fletching to suit your specific needs.
The same goes for cutting and tuning your shafts. It’s all good. All fun. And cheaper, too.in reply to: I got the shakes! #30735I had a bad case of the fevor when I was just starting hunting with a rifle. I was in thrick woods and saw the bark blow off the tree several yards between me and the buck. He bolted but shakey me still managed to crank two more rounds out of my Granddad’s K98 before I settled down to hear the ringing in my ears. I still hear it when I think of it and cringe when I think that I fired off two un accounted for rounds into the woods. I’m sure I wouldn’t do that again, but the blood does speed up when a deer is about. I like the excitement, but can do without the shakes!
in reply to: Bear kills deer #30720Great story and a terrific family photo. Two trophies. best, dwc
in reply to: They say you cant go back #27833Very nice story. Brings back memories for me, too, although I didn’t get started with bow hunting until a few years ago. My first bow hunt for deer was actually when I was in high school. A buddy and I went to hunt some woods, but we didn’t have a clue. We stomped through the woods and fields like we were hunting rabbits with shotguns. Then nothing for many years until the bug hit me three years ago.
Thanks for a nice read. best of luck, dwcin reply to: " Primitive " Bowfishing Video #27190That’s funny. At first I thought it was some wierd type of chum. Good idea for a spool that does not have to attach to the bow.
in reply to: " Primitive " Bowfishing Video #27111Great video that explains the process. Good music, too! thanks, dwc
in reply to: I think more point weight will help #26710That might do it, but you’ll have a heck of a time getting it to expand shot out of your recurve! Maybe a ballistic tip would work…
in reply to: Shorty McGraw #26616George,
Great tale, well said. It brought an easy picture of the whole story to mind. Best, dwcin reply to: Opinons on Misses While Hunting #21539Hi Steve,
Thanks for the tip. I’m sure it’s a form issue as the misses were as consistent as as the target hits. Much appreciated. Good luck this year!
I’ve only been able to get out a few times this year. No shots. Yet…in reply to: SBD bowstrings? #21087I figured as much, but it gets the point across! The new set-up is nice.
in reply to: SBD bowstrings? #20766You sure about that?? dwc
