in reply to: Found a point and killed a hog…. #32854
The Grandfathers smiled when you found that ancient point and sent you a gift. 😀
I beleive Samick is a major producer of bow limbs and risers for target shooting. I don’t have any personal experience with those bows but I have a Volcano that I bought on a whim because it was so cheap. I was really surprised at the overall quality of the wood and workmanship. It looked almost as good as a bow costing twice as much and it shoots very good. I am careful with my things so I don’t expect it to fail from abuse. So far it has performed very well.
in reply to: An Old Coot's Contemplations…. #27281Steve,
So glad you’re back! Missed you, and thought about you alot. I’ve still got my old bows waiting again for that call from before. It’s why I got them in the first place 20 some years ago. Look forward to reading your posts.

in reply to: Homemade alcohol stoves #24040Here’s a link to a website that deals with the homemade alcohol stoves made from cat food cans.

Dave is right about the peak fuel it is hotter but you mentioned using wood or tablets. On this website it shows how to make a wind screen system for the stove which they call a fire bucket. It protects the flame and makes using the stove safer. You can also use tablets, wood chips or sticks in the fire bucket if needed, provided it is legal to do so. I camp at low altitude along coastal plain rivers so it might work there and being able to use a small amount of wood instead is attactive too since it is usually wet and the fire getting away is not likely.
in reply to: Homemade alcohol stoves #23048Interesting site. Lead me to check out the Super Cat home made stove. Now I gotta make one just for the heck of it.
in reply to: short longbow recommendation #22806I hear Annewakee is coming out with a longbow model. Not sure if it will be a short one though. Their recurves are beautiful.
in reply to: Sealing Some Surewood shafts #21548Yes, thanks to Dennis. He has motivated me to get to working on my arrows. That and the warmer weather we are having of late.

in reply to: Some Family Hunting and Scouting Pics #21251T you have an awesome backyard and a great family. I’ll probably never see the tops of those mountains now so thanks for letting me live awhile, if only vicariously, through you! Your family is very lucky to have you taking them out in that country. 😀
in reply to: 61 days away… #18552From the scat I’ve seen in NC when they have loaded up on wild beautyberry, um, its pretty easy to see with out picking through it. Its pretty loose.
in reply to: Bigfoot caught on trail cam! #18538Yeah! Messin’ with Bigfoot! Bet we can catch him with a quart of Breyer’s Rocky Road!
in reply to: Vintage Bear Arrows #17355Yeah Killdeer nailed it. Now you need some of the dark green razor heads.
in reply to: Stain/Seal/Cap/Crest/Glue Compatibility #15224Ditto on the Duco on wood or polyurethane. I wipe on the polyu with a rag after I stain the shafts. Stain type depends on what wood I’m using. Port Orford Cedar has more oil in the wood and might require a laquer or alchohol stain. Other woods like chundoo, hickory or ashe will take a natrual stain like walnut hulls and water. Here are some chundoo stained with walnut hull and finished with polyu.

I’ve had these for a while and they needed repair. I sanded off some of the original stain, sealed them, repaired the fletching, added a crest, and some small game tips.in reply to: Neck knife conversion… #15209Nice work! I’ve been thinking about converting one of mine to a neck knife. I could probably just add a lanyard of some type. Good point Steve on the breaking strength, had not though about that.
in reply to: My Dad's Old Bear Bow #11735Yeah, I would not modify it. Those old static recurves are valuble. That one has the brush guards built into the static limb tips. Cool. Maybe you could find a left handed one and have a matched pair.
