I’ve been thinking about this, what you wrote, Justin, for a couple days now.
I have always had a deep spiritual connection with the place I live in. Without this prairie, I would not exist.
I first touched a bow in February of this year, made a batch of arrows a month later, bought my recurve 3 1/2 months ago. Fact is, archery, well…awakened something in me. At the risk of sounding cheesy, it’s like a puzzle has been solved that I didn’t know existed – or a piece that I didn’t know was missing has fit into place. Let me be clear, none of this is to say that I am “better than thou”. It’s just that archery, and hunting in general, has profoundly impacted my life and family’s life. I only started hunting 10 months ago. A friend gave me an old .270 last fall, another friend taught me to butcher, and I wound up putting 4 deer on the table.
For me, hunting is akin to heating with wood.
Hunting, like cutting firewood, allows me to provide for my family’s primary physical needs. The bow, like the maul, is a physical tool that provides a spiritual connection to the land we rely upon. Archery feeds us both physically and spiritually. It’s like it was there all along…I just didn’t recognize it.

Not cheesy to me Ben. When we stop thinking we are just humans searching for a spiritual experience and start realizing we are really a spirit having a temporary human experience that we see how broadly connected we are to everything.
in reply to: Any Georgia Bear Hunters Here? #63070Nice pig and great pics too. Hope to see a Georgia bear pic post soon on this thread. Thanks for sharing your hunt with us.
in reply to: how many arrows for hunting? #59787I used to carry 6 arrows with broadheads in a Kwikee Quiver if I was going out all day. Now I usually just do half day hunts with a midday break back at the truck or camp so now a smaller bow quiver with 3-4 broadheads and a blunt or other type of small game arrow in a piggy backer suits me better in case I see an opportunity for small game. I may have extra arrows in the truck if needed.

in reply to: FIRST TRADITIONAL HARVEST !! #58579Wow! Nice!
in reply to: Corn feeders #57534I used corn for bait one season years ago after it was legalized on private land. It did not seem to increase my chances at a buck but there seemed to be alot of does and lots of yearlings on it. Then doe shooting was limited but today everything is legal starting on opening day so it may offer more opportunity now. The cons were having to constantly go into the area to replenish the corn supply. Seemed to be more work than it was worth and an extra expense too. So I have never used bait since. Maybe I could claim more kills if I had continued using it but to me it has been more fun to find what nature provides and hunt over that. But I don’t fault anyone that uses it if it is legal. For hogs, those are feral anyway, I’d say use it on them unless you want more challenge in stalking them.
in reply to: Wow! My first deer with a bow! #57518Very nice!
in reply to: Found some venison… #57513Nice deer! So Eastern Red Cedar. I’ve heard of bows made from it but not as common as the usual hardwoods. Usually backed with something. You have me interested in trying it. How long did you let it dry? Did knots give you any trouble?
in reply to: Congratulations Dave Petersen! #57099Well deserved, Congratulations!
in reply to: Good Friend Gets His First! #56406Congratulations on the nice buck, but I’m even more impressed with you handling that snake. I like snakes too but am forced by the wife to kill an occasional copperhead if she sees it. If I see it it usually gets a free pass. Same with the timber rattlers which are somewhat rare here.
