Jim, this is a great topic. In my regular haunts I usually know where 20 yds is to a tree or rock so I can figure from there when the deer show up. They never go and stand by my marker but having a mark helps when deciding to take the shot or not. Thanks for the tips too.

Good job Jason, and nice pic too. Don’t worry about the orange. Once squirrel starts on Monday here I’ll be wearing it too. Have had some close calls while in tree stands with shotgun toting squirrel hunters. 😯

Contact 3 Rivers. They sell Samick limbs and may have them for that bow.

I’m no elk hunter but I agree there is a time of day that we should make the call not to shoot. I may stay on stand after that time just to listen to what goes on awhile just for fun, then leave the woods in darkness. You made the right call, besides that bull will keep much better on the hoof for tomorrows hunt. 😀

Beautiful places. You are lucky to have them.

If you are climbing this year don’t ever forget your safety harness. There are guys out there that will tell us we don’t want to learn that lesson the hard way. I shudder now to think of all the hunts with little or no fall protection in my past. I guess I was just lucky. Today I would not go up without one.

I have done it when bucky caught me without my tab or glove on, but for practice? Not that tough I guess.

I like the Ace Hex Head for tough small game. While I’ve never tried pheasants with the bow I’ve read many accounts and it seems they mostly say that a 2 blade broadhead not quite shaving sharp is best because pheasants are tough birds. Chachalaca are probably equally tough. But if blount is preffered such as when using dogs, I’d go with a steel blount such as the Ace. It can be bought in variety weights to match the other heads you are shooting. I buy glue ons and glue them to inserts when I want to use carbons. On a side note you should probably use flu flus for birds or you may lose alot of arrows. I use a 3 fletch flu flu that has some speed but is not too slow.

We have always used the same recipe Mom used for calves liver. It is much like what Steve described except Mom added a dash of vinegar and worchestershire to the sauteed onions and let simmer. Sometimes it was just vinegar if we didn’t have worchetershire sauce. Don’t over do either one of these ingrediants. We do not use much salt as I don’t tolerate it well but I am used to eating foods with little salt. If you like alot of salt you might think my food is bland.

Another overlooked morsel is the heart. Cleaning the valves and tendons out of the insides is pretty simple then slice or dice as you wish and cook the same as the liver.

We also soaked the organ meats in salt water, changing it at least 3 times in the fridge. This, in my opinion is all the salt the meat needs.

mhay – The farmer story is priceless! I loved it. 😀

Not retired yet so can’t be too choosy about when I go so if we have highs in the 80’s I go early and late although the deer do move at midday I just don’t care to hunt in the heat. As was already said if we wait too long they will be spooked by the other season hunters out “scouting” and putting up stands etc. However, I do look forward to the first few crisp mornings with the leaves changing and falling all about. Nothing like it.
