Ben, thanks for the heads-up on Tung oil vs. finish. The learning process continues. Indeed I am using Minwax Tung oil finish, something like $16 for a pint! What did you pay for the real thing? I’m sure it would be cheaper to buy it pure and thin it yourself. I’m pleased with it so far, but the arrows haven’t yet been put into service so I have no idea how well it will hold up. But judging from the weight gain, the wood soaked it up pretty deeply so it should last a while, and be quite easy to touch up. I’m done with gasket lacquer and poly, for wood arrows as well as any wood bows I may build in future. The only “advantage” I see to the hard-surface dip finishes is shine, which I don’t need.

Ben, I just bought the brand the local hardware store sells. Being a newby to oil finishing I didn’t know there was a difference.

I want to second your question about fletching glue and oil finish. I have a dozen self-nocked spruce arrows finished with three coats of rubbed Tung oil, ready to go other than fletching, which I’m hold off on applying until I get a chance to bare-shaft the arrows to my inbound new selfbow. Frankly I never gave it a thought until you raised the question. I strongly suspect there’s no problem since Tung “oil” isn’t the least oily. But it’s still a good question, as well as preferred glues.

Shane, I’ve been thinking that if there are multiple cats and you can legally kill them, and the object is to kill them to get rid of a risk to livestock, rather than sport, I’d take a rifle out and just get ‘er done. You can also use an electronic game caller which will allow you to be a better position, like up a tree, and not have the cat focusing on you when it comes in. That’s illegal in some states but not many, and it’s totally unethical in sport hunting. But if you’re doing damage control anything goes.

I don’t hunt predators, period, much less with a rifle. But a few years ago after weeks of having two coyotes harass my dogs and wife on their walks–one snuck in from behind to nip my wife on the butt but our Golden got there in time to make a save–I took the scoped .22 out on their next walk and, when they came charging in barking, as usual, I took care of the problem pronto. No regrets. There is sport hunting, and there is necessity.

It would almost be worth the cost and effort of the trip just to be a fly on the wall where Alex and Col. Mike are at the same time. Esp. if Mike has his infamous jug of high-end Scotch (I never used to think I liked Scotch, until Mike taught me I’d never before had “real” Scotch). If we could get AusJim, Smithhammer and a few other Resident Tradbow Comedians there too, well damn I’d just have to come. And who was that guy who wore funny hats and was our lead comic in the early days and disappeared unceremoniously for a very long time then showed up again not long ago, for maybe two days and dropped off the flat earth again? Can’t quite grab his name out of the old cobby skull … how soon celebrity is forgot. :P:lol:

At the best of times this joint is turning into Comedy Central … and I love it! If I can’t be funny, at least I can be around funny people. 😛

I don’t hunt predators but I do know that this time of year, you can readily call in bears and cats with fawn bleats. Bear mostly just come shambling straight in, but cats will circle and sneak in, so scent control is paramount. Tests show that bear spray works just fine on lions. We have plenty of bears and lions and my wife carries bear spray always, but never a gun. She’s been growled and hissed at when the dogs got too close to an occupied kitten den, as have I, but nothing more. Thing about cats is that they’re invisible and see you all the time while you rarely see them. Should be an exciting hunt! Judging by rare attack reports larger people are almost never accosted by lions while smaller people are at risk. Maybe wear high heels and a tophat? 😆

JP, that’s a sadly beautiful overview of “how it happens” everywhere. A trophy house at a time, a logging project and a few more miles of new roads, every few years, then run some cows into those clearcuts and let’s designate some of those new roads, after their use is done, as ATV trails. Both ATVs and cows bring in invasive weeds that crowd out wildlife forage … one step at a time, invisible to those who aren’t really looking, and all support by the industrialists and their elected flunkies as “job creation,” as if that puts a blessing on anything we want to do to further destroy the world … and the good public hunting lands are the first to go.

Did it make “the book”? Ain’t worth a darn otherwise, I hear. And I trust you didn’t cheat and use bait. 😆 You can eat most anything if you turn it into jerky. I mean, if it works on goose it must work on whatever it is they make those things out of.

Doc, your thread title is a bit misleading insofar as a change in brace height due to string stretch will of course affect arrow flight … but EFOC or lack thereof has no bearing on it. Does your friend think that arrows with low FOC would not be affected by string stretch and consequent relocation of nocking point and arrow angle on the shelf? I see no EFOC cause-effect relation, as friend is attempting to imply. All critics of EFOC, at least in my experience, lack extensive experience and a real working familiarity with EFOC. In general, I agree with others that EFOC, or even degrees of increased FOC, deliver superior arrow flight under all circumstances. Any negatives such as increased trajectory don’t much seem to come into play at ethical trad shot distances. Does your friend shoot trad or wheels? In any event, never leave a strung bow in a car under any conditions. :P:D

Bob — Footed wood shafts are heavy, too heavy to add a 300-grain head to and not go way overweight for the 50-something pound longbows I now shoot. I still have a set of those, from an early experiment many years ago. If you want to shoot wood and want good total weight and don’t care about FOC, they’re a good way to go. But I want to hold total weight as close as possible to 700 grains, with 300 of it up front. It’s a good set-up with good balance between total weight and FOC, and as good as I’ve been able to work up with wood. But the tendency of wood to break behind the head is magnified with a monster head, so that’s the issue. And too, it’s play. Thanks for your good suggestion.

Bruce, here are the specs. Darned if I didn’t get the knife and ruler unaligned (no wonder I flunked out of engineering school even before I enrolled). Overall it’s 8″ long. The handle is nice and fat, the way I like it.

There are actually a few of us “crazy f…s” who think residents should pay more. I know that’s un-American by TP ideals, which demand more services for less taxes. But still, it’s just too good a deal. If only CPW could learn to be less wasteful of their funds maybe the movement could gain some footing.
