in reply to: Can you consistently hit a paper plate? #137608Good practice set up – sounds like to me —
I am mostly a ground blind/ stand hunter these days. My range is in a small steep little Arroyo behind my house – allows me to shoot some uphill/ downhill shots, just in case.

Yes, I too prefer tgts sized similar to the game (like your feed bag set up) I am training for- plus I like to place them at a ( average) proper height off the ground for said critter. This helps me simulate all aspects of the hunting shot at game for instinctive shooting ( at least i like to hope so )- which I do.
Ferguson quote is great- one of those easy to do in theory – but difficult in practice , at least for me.

I go back and forth on wether it is preferable to shoot at blank targets ( of various sizes imitating game ) to force myself to pick a spot, or use of an artificial aiming point ( paper plate). I realize if you group your arrows in the correct area you have a self made aiming point. At least the first shots are at a spot i have to pick. I also have a number of tgts at the back stop, at varying heights off the ground to make me adjust my aim etc. Currently I am preferring the blank tgt set up. Your thoughts

Sounds like you are well along on the tradbow adventure, having fun, and enjoying the journey –Great !
I thought the Samick Sage were mostly take down bows ? If you have one, that is a great bow to start out on — because you can buy different limbs to adjust weight to work your way up or down, depending on purpose or need.
Although it is always fun to get a new bow — Something I am guilty of periodically. The grizzly is a very nice hunting bow and easier to carry, but possibly a little more difficult to shoot for that reason ( lighter in weight ( actual) and shorter if I recall correctly )

in reply to: Diving into Wood Arrow Building #137357Hi Kristin
Sounds like you are ready to have a go at it. Hopefully some of our more expert wood arrow builders will chime in . I pretty much build arrows to shoot more for hunting / practice then for beauty- haha.
I don’t know about tru oil causing color issues on arrow shafts – I Havn’t tried it. In the olden times both tung oil and teak oil were highly thought of . But since you have tru oil, you could experiment by just building a couple arrows with it to completion and see if the color pleases you – or not.
Be attentive to detail while tapering and you shouldn’t have any trouble. I use the cheaper hand tool ( fancy pencil sharpener – Haha) which works fine for my purposes ( not a match shooter)
If you search prior posts here on the site I think you will find a LOT of discussion on the subjects you are asking about – if you run into difficulty looking up same, I am sure webmom can help.
I would start with 2 / 3 arrows jump in and see how it goes . I find if I take my time, and try to be as meticulous as i can – it usually works out ok. I think you will find the same.

You are not ” overbowed” if you can handle it —and it sounds like you are serious enuff to maintain skills at that weight level — go for it

Damon Howatt Hunters are a fine, popular bow. Congrats on picking one up at a good price.
Many years ago I shot 70 -80 lb bows – but not anymore – health issues.
My current heavy bow is a 60 lber , which I still shoot and keep in readiness for when ( unfortunately not this year ) I draw elk.
Have fun- heavy bows have their niche – if one spends the time and effort to master them, imho.

in reply to: Compass ???? #137244Richard
New one on me.
I have used the wrist band compasses ( still do ) but have not had a problem. Did you have problems with the same brand ? Bad batch ? Now made in ?
I use a suunto on my weak wrist. Had good luck with them
One of the things that can cause problems is some knife scabbards now have magnets to help hold the knife in. If near the compass —–

Not familiar with this ?
Is it about shooting arrows in the wind ? Ie – how wind effects their flight?

I understand your situation very well, I have the same affliction. The revelation for me was seeing R2s longer adjustable cord, on his home built custom made tab – thanks Ralph.
