My basic thought is always, let nature take its course. My second thought, is it able to- with all the manipulation by us. I like your last sentence, might have to borrow it for future use.

I find it interesting that the state doesn’t support the red wolf ? Is that unofficial. There doesn’t seem to be as much of a ” cause celebre” associated with the Red Wolf —

Yes on switching to smaller tgts to help focus ( on picking a smaller spot). I noticed a tightening of my group when I switched to the card. Yes, try the course it’s fun and more challenging than you might think.

Haha you are getting after it ! I might try the 15/20/25. But that probably is the limit of my ” instinctive” shooting skills. At least for the size of my current tgt backing!

          My thoughts exactly

Or a lot more coyotes around than wolves  —–

            Charles and Dave

Interesting to get info from members actually in the field on this issue. I saw a doc on the coywolf a couple years ago ( I thought it was about Chicago area but don’t recall NE somewhere). Have you seen any info on why this may have occurred . My understanding of the grey wolf is that it will kill or push out coyotes from its hunting areas ( in Wyo/ Montana ?).  In NM ( AZ too) we have the Mex Wolf and coyotes. I have seen a few of the wolves in the Gila – but so far they seem pretty spooky. They don’t seem to have impacted the elk much that I can tell. I know ranchers on the blue in AZ aren’t happy. wiki says hybridization of the mexican wolf and coyotes has been rare.

Then there is the red wolf ?! Stephen I read there are still a few running around north Carolina ?

              Q shoot

I used my 54″ shrew classic hunter ( Coffey built) 56# @ 27″ and shrew firefly w tuffhead brass points -wood arrows . Split finger – I stretched, but shot it cold. For reasons i’ll comment at the end .

              Paper plate 8 1/2″

              10yd —30pts

              15yd—-45pts

              20yd—-60pts

              Playing Card

              10yds —40pts

              15yds—-0pts

              20yds—-0pts

Snake shot bonus rd —-  0pts – it is harder than it looks

              175 pts

I was happy I hit the plate every time as that is my hunting ( kill area) goal. Although it was touch and go on a couple ( just caught the plate) But was surprised how poorly I grouped especially at close range. I think Jims idea makes an excellent proficiency/ qual course. Ie shoot it cold ( only every month or so* ) to see if your trng is keeping you in hunting trim. I normally shoot at tgts with no aiming point so i have to pick a spot . I found it more difficult to pick a spot on the plate for some reason( probably just shot at the whole plate ). I am going to shoot this periodically to see what happens and I will also black out the plate ( can’t see it) see if it causes any differences in grouping.

I really enjoyed shooting at the card very challenging and real – shooting one arrow from each distance.

The snake shot was tuff for me. Never shot that close before – of course I hit subsequently but only cold counts haha.

Thanks Jim a lot of fun

              Scout aka Ray

PS if you are wondering about the angle –my range is in an Arroyo that curves behind my house thus, the angle of the arrow changes the further out I get

Need to work on my precision before I try to go turkey hunting again —

              Pss

For those interested in not breaking an arrow I shot the snake shot from a step stool contraption I  have, so I could lay the tgt on top of the hay/ sand/ tgt debris and shoot at a downforward angle at it.

                Tom

Interesting and varied collection. I would go out and shoot them all this week – haha. With the pandemic – we all ought to be quite accurate by deer hunting season.  Not sure whats going to happen in NM — so far Spring Turkey is open.  I read in WA state they ( ” they , they ,  who the hell is they ” — finish the quote for the gold star )  postponed the spring turkey and bear season!?

Yes I have been known to trade my bowquivers between bows also. I have a couple eagle flights I use now. One I modified to fit my needs a little better. I find the same issues ie the quiver effects the lighter bows more. But like R2 I kinda like the extra bit of weight /stability.

                  Jim

I have often thought the American Indian ” side quiver” ( although i believe they moved them around on their person depending on the ” terrain and situation ” ) was the way to go for me. I think i’ll try and make one.

That is a pretty bold coyote coming up to the back porch. Inside the wire as it were.  The coyotes definitely impact the pets ( dogs and cats) here in my area. What part of the country are you in? Near a city ? I have friends in LA that have told me the coyotes there are becoming an issue. Then there is a hybrid called coywolves ( saw a documentary where they were living in Chicago I think ) cross between wolves and coyotes? I find this odd because here in the West wolves kill coyotes that are in their hunting area. Interesting evolutionary modification the coywolf if natural ? The coyotes pass thru my yard now and then, but usually keep their distance. I enjoy hearing them at night, but they can cause a lot of mischief.

                      Hi Tom

Sounds like you are enjoying your bear polar . A shootable collectable.

3 rivers still sells bow tuff under the Gordon brand . Havn’t used it so can’t comnent on it.

                        Hi Robert

Welcome . I have owned Schulz longbows in the past . Outstanding longbows ! Unfortunately my last one didn’t make it thru a move. I have not tried to sell one. But imagine if you put it out for sale at 1200.00 +- would be a good starting point on an auction site.

Maybe Stephen has some ideas on value, I believe he has spent sometime around Mr Schulz—–

                              Hi TSHMED

Looks like you have developed a great Ashby arrow.

Above 650 in weight – good FOC. Yes it’s a little stiff. You can try increasing the brace height and / or adding the full insert. Try this and see what happens. Or make another arrow/s and leave it a little longer.

                                  Fine with me Jim

I have not shot in competition in yrs so R2 or Richard might give us some rules and yardages – i like the paper plate( 81/2″ or larger ?) idea. I Havn’t shot past 25 yds in years either —
