in reply to: Let's See Your Fletching #23244
I second you on carbon shafting Dave. I’ve shot into the leg of a 3d target with an aluminum sleeved shaft and heavy head and hit metal with nothing happening structurally to the arrow. Here is my fletching:
3.5″x.75″ 4 fletch A&A out of East Tennessee wild turkey.
in reply to: Any folks near Greenville, TN? #22338Hey Doc! I’m not too far from Greenville. I’m in Bristol. PM me sometime. I don’t know of any trad clubs as of now, but I think kettlefoot shooting range has some shoots sometimes.

in reply to: "Hunter's" groups: the good and the very bad #51278After reading this article, I can’t help but draw a parallel to an instance happening here in Northeast TN/Southwest VA. We apparently have enough sportsmen and women to support a Bass Pro Shops and a Cabelas within 7 miles of one another. They are both being constructed right now (leveled a mountain for Cabelas but that’s another story). Anyway I know they’re not an organization with member dues, but I can’t help remember Bass Pro’s slogan from only a few years back, “remember, we all live downstream”. This comes to mind because they are doing absolutely nothing to lobby against allowing fracking in Washington County VA, primarily alongside one of the best smallmouth bass rivers in the state. Also, you see nothing from the NRA, who’s member density is no doubt high in this area per the amount of bumper stickers that can be seen.

in reply to: beginner bow #45388I had a Ben Pearson Colt (I think) once upon a time when I was younger, and it would be a good starter longbow with the correct target arrows. I think it pulled 20-25# or so. My little cousin has it now and is enjoying it. I reckon you could find one maybe on craigslist or some other classifieds. That’s a good little target bow though.
in reply to: Shrew brace height #45381Update:
So I made a string and served it, added some rubber whiskers, and finished the bow. Best shooting bow I’ve ever owned by far! Granted I’ve never had a custom bow, but this thing is sweet. I forgot to mention that Gary had originally made the bow for himself and had never put finish on it. So I had to finish it, but I enjoy things like that. Pictures to come…
in reply to: Shrew brace height #44731Thanks guys! Steve, to my knowledge he still lives over in Russell County. He said he just happened to have some extra stuff laying around so he brought it along. I didn’t think to ask about the height when I was there, I should have though. I figured between 7 1/2 and 8 though. I don’t know if he’s still building bows or not, didn’t think to ask him about that either. Had some honey-do stuff to get done at home!
in reply to: A new one to the fold #44051That’s awesome, congratulations! I married a woman who doesn’t hunt, but loves the time off when I go hunting! I told my brother he better look good and hard to find him one that’ll either hunt, or enjoy the time alone. Sounds like you’ve got a winner!:)
in reply to: Bright Fletching/Wraps and Hunting #32572I crested my arrows with fluorescent chartreuse krylon spray paint, and chartreuse feathers. They are very easy to track in flight, and I’ll bet they’ll be easier to find that the black and turkey fletched arrows I previously used.
in reply to: Paint instead of wraps? #24412I can gladly say that I have a great setup for this season and hopefully many to come. The paint worked out great, and after getting my arrows tuned I have around 24% FOC. CX heritage 250 shaft, 100gr brass insert, 125gr. Steel adaptor, 185gr grizzly broadhead, and a ~2.75″ aluminum sleeve footing. Also did the 2.5″x4 a&a fletch with a turbulator.
The shafts looked like 9mm holes when I finally got them paper tuned, and they fly great with the broadheads. Now we wait for the end of sept. And whitetail season…..
in reply to: What ya got goin? #15178Gorgeous country and pictures Smith! The stove will weigh about a pound and a half with the foil roll chimney. It’s two steam bar pans 2.5″ deep by 6″ wide by 10″ long (I think) haven’t put a tape to it yet. It nests together and is about 4″ thick broken down. Boiled a tea kettle of water in under 10 min. Last night. Hopefully I’ll get to put it to good use this season!
in reply to: Splinter on recurve. Back it? #14718It’s not standing up any, but the epoxy method sounds good. Next time I order some g2 I’ll put a dab on there and clamp it. Thanks for the advice!
