Well thanks for the compliment. For those considering the short long bow–I second every thing Mr. Elkhart said. Light, smooth, and moves easily in hand while crawling through the brush. When I took it to 3-rivers this past summer to proof for arrows–Dave E. said “wow that Shrew really launches an arrow–and so quiet”. With the right arrow–she shoots where you point her.
For Java Man
Was wondering–as I was on the wait list for a new Shrew–and never really officially canceled that after I got Dave P’s–can I use that wait time to move up the list for an Elkheart. If not, do you give disabled vet preference or old hunters–I mean we don’t have a lot of wait time left.
Sorry folks a mans gotta try for an edge–

in reply to: Santa came! New JMA Elkheart #55937Why?
Does a 65Yr. old retired Marine–who owns 3 bows (one a shrew)–has every thing that one could want in this life
–loving wife, outdoor business, etc. Then Why do I look at these pictures and dream about acquiring another bow from Mr. Coffey?
Perhaps it’s time that our webmaster scrubs this stuff, so that the adolescent AARP members are not required to justify another purchase to that loving wife. javascript:addSmiley(‘:D’);
Dave–Enjoy–looking forward to reports of it’s performance and your shaft selection.

in reply to: Tuffhead 225 gr. Penetration #49261The recipe is on page 150 of my signed copy of A Man Made of Elk. I know–why do I have so much time to chase these facts. Kind of hunkered down in 20-30kt winds–rain changing to snow later with wind gusts to 40kts. Should be an interesting weekend with 10-20″ of blowing snow. Dogs are happy snug in their straw filled houses waiting for next run.:D
Happy holiday to all.

PS. I really think 225gr. tuffhead is a bit much for domestic cat:lol:

Thanks for all the great info and pictures. Had my wife the professional photographer looking at them–think it’s a done deal.:D Curious, do you use the com wire as a trip wire? I thought the IR thingy did that.
Once it’s on site and producing will post. Once I figure out how to do that.

in reply to: High FOC works #14823Dave asked me to pass this on to you all about real FOC.
Some years ago I used to launch 40mm darts about a meter long weighing about 20lbs. from a 120mm tank cannon. These were fin stabilized discarding sabots. Moving at over 1500m/sec- at 3000m they penetrated the front glaces armor plate of a T-72 and exited through the engine–taking all with it and making pyrotechnics in an awesome display. The head was depleted uranium with a ball bearing cone that ensured no ricochet.
Some years later I learned that this round was 40%+ weight forward of center.
So back into trad bows after 42 years and I am shooting 18.33% foc. Should be sufficient for whitetail. Trust me I will be a lot heavier up front next year.

in reply to: Public Land hunting ethics #11438Etter,Dave,J. ET all.
As the discussion has rebounded from ethics of hunting predators to using dogs. I feel the need to add my 2 pennies.
Have trained dogs for some 50+ years mostly retrievers, pointers and flushers–no hounds. For many years never fired a shot as Etter says just watching and working the dogs was enough.
Today I mushed 12 husky’s with 21 girl scouts as their passengers and 10 mom’s watching. While my wife gave instruction in all that they were seeing and experiencing from how the live to all the equipment and racing. My training log shows that we (Linda and I) have some 15,000 miles behind our team.
Point of all this is to say I know about dogs and hunting with them.
Ethics–OK here I go. I believe that fair chase/trad bow hunting means one hunter with his equipment stalking our ambushing his quarry in their environment. IMHO that doesn’t include tree stands, baits of any type, or the use of dogs (except for upland game and for retrieving). It means in their environment so ambushing water holes is in the environment–the prey are particularly wary there so good luck.
Biology of predator control: It is known that when our species leave them alone predators and prey establish a balance.PERIOD. When prey exceeds the holding area the predators move in and establish a balance and they generally over produce but die out when prey populations reduce. Thus balance.
Our species screws it up when we kill all the predators so we have deer eating your garden. In the west we have lions eating your cats and dogs.
Having ranted I will end by stating that local game regulations seem to me to be somewhat effective in regulating that imbalance created by our society to the detriment of our wild.
I don’t hunt predators. They seem like family to me.

If your serious e-mail can use all the help I can get and best if it’s someone who thinks like me. Time to check on the dogs more when you respond.

Great video. Although I don’t hunt bear (personal) I agree with our DNR season to control the population. Where are you in MD ? I live in Garrett county. Perhaps we can link for some bow shooting. But if you have a chain saw and time I could use free help to clear trails.:D

in reply to: The funniest archery story ever? #53331Now that I have recovered from chocking on my dip of cope and blowing out my beer through my nose and have finally stopped laughing–perhaps you learned- ed gents can advise.
After this last weeks snow-i-cane with many trees down on our trails and I’m looking at a week or so with chain saw to clear–I’m now thinking –man what a chance for archery practice. Have some old alum. arrows I can turn into fire sticks easily–but what to put on the trees. No longer have access to c-4 or det chord. I’m thinking butane lighters (cheap) with powder from shot gun shells as the explosion. Maybe some gasoline to help–no problem with fire with all this snow. Will check responses tomorrow early before heading out. 10 year old brain in a 65 year old body. Hold my beer -And watch this!!:D:

Whoops I may have mislead with my use of the term mucks. I meant to say mukluks which is what I wear when temps are below +20 to -50. Check out mukluks.com. Not promoting that site but they are the best hunting footwear going IMHO. Oh, by the way, the fossil record shows that many of our ancestors lived to the ripe old age of 80 and were running 30-50 miles a day–while hunting. While we loose about 15,000 a year below the age of 25 in car accidents.
