Official total from Oct through today = 216 inches of the white stuff, although in the 60’s today it’s not over- 2 years ago we got 3 feet on 18 April:)
Watched 5 jakes and 2 gobblers this morning strutting their stuff–got rather muddy and wet sneaking out as not to disturb them, 8 days for the season to open–please no more snow!

in reply to: New Bow/The Good Hunt #60269Thanks for all the show of support–HOWEVER–after discussing with Dave and Robin, my idea isn’t going to work for our intended purpose. Sorry all–drop the issue.
Now I have to decide which bow to take stump busting while I scout for turkey this morning–Life is good:lol:

in reply to: Sika Deer Hunt #57628Dave/Cold pack -short answer yes. All are located in 6 counties on the eastern shore–that means across the bay bridge-east of the Chesapeake bay. Ah- about 6 hours driving from us in western Md. A quick glance at this years hunting reg.show about 6 different times for bow season. Not sure about out of state requirements and to be quite frank you have to be a lawyer to read our regs. particularly at night after a couple of–. If interested can investigate for you guys–I live in the hunters paradise of western Md. so would have to do some research for guides (I would recommend). If interested let me know–not to discourage but most of those deer live in heavily visited by tourists birding and such areas. I have spent many days over there on other adventures and considered them so habituated they were almost tame. I wouldn’t consider them free roaming–but I could be very wrong, and I don’t want to step on anyone’s AO–that I have never hunted. Let me know if you want further info and will get you some links in a day or so.

in reply to: HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK #57602Have to agree with Dave. I used to hunt them on the eastern shore years ago when I was stationed at the Naval Academy–they don’t eat well. Here in our mountains of western MD. spring and fall are announced by 100’s every day flying right over our house about 200ft.AGL. The sound of their wings and honks are magical. But I have a question for any ornithologists or hunters –why do they fly in a v formation with one side longer then the other?

in reply to: Abell's instinctive shooting books – a question #57584Jim–well that’s the downside of jumping out of airplanes–the upside is that you can practice form from you cheeks or knees which is were most hunting shots are taken–I mean when did you last fire at a bad guy from the off hand:P. Have you considered attaching a target to the toddlers(on a long lead of course)–great moving target practice–well unless the sheila is watching:lol: We hit the upper 40’s today great run with the dogs in the slush:?

in reply to: Abell's instinctive shooting books – a question #57548Jim–I’m certainly not an expert–but work on the form as he describes–2 meters from target draw and shoot–over and over. As my wife likes to say we Marines only learn by mindless repetition followed by blunt trauma. Then I discovered that I could concentrate on the spot– draw and shoot(without thinking about it) and walla hit the mark. I think you will find it money well spent mate (watch out for the video those guys are shooters and it ain’t that easy):D.
Then you can get his book on stalking and still hunting–I thought I was pretty good at that stuff (I’m still here after stalking prey that shoots back:evil:)–but I picked up some very good tips from that one. Enjoy your fall and winter I’m glad it’s spring on this end of the globe.

in reply to: wool or camo? #26581I wore camo for 32 years–when your hunting critters that don’t smell, hear, or see very well (two legged) it works great–but move and your seen. Wool is great–quite in the woods, warm when it’s wet and usually not made in china. Now that I’m no longer in the business of hunting our species–no camo for me. Besides–who wants to look like a Marine or soldier when we are out having FUN. A little camo paint on the face works great for covering that sign post and a face mask–if you have a white beard like some of us:).
The best camo is being still-no movement and silence.
Although I now see that our Navy submariners are wearing camo–haven’t figured that one out yet so I may be missing something.

in reply to: Good for Illinois ?? #18174Michael–sorry, a lifetime of acronyms. BCH–Back country hunters and anglers. TU–Trout unlimited. Wtf–Wild turkey federation. Rgs–Ruffed grouse society. I don’t support the nra–IMHO–their stated purpose- defending our constitutional rights is a cover to support the gun manufacturing cabal-the organizations prime contributor. I won’t go on with that thread.:?

in reply to: Good for Illinois ?? #17690Thanks Robin and CPT Frog–I used to have an adjutant that handled my lengthy rambles–retirement is heck. The good news is that Linda caught me before I put my fist through this new laptop–replaced one I threw down the stairs. Back to the trad. lifestyle– I now have pen and paper– can you send me the mailing address?
in reply to: Good for Illinois ?? #16638Dave–Web Mother–I just spent an hour responding with some great insight and got logged out:evil:
Summary of my thoughts follow:
1. IL ban on new game farms is good.
2. Humane society is not the enemy and Peta is deserving of nothing but scorn.
3. Education of non-hunters is key never pass up the opportunity– great organizations to help–BCH, TU, WTF, RGS, ( no not the nra).
Oh well I tried–my fault–got to in-depth and I don’t type that quickly.

in reply to: What's in a Name? #1544732 years in the USMC. After retirement in 02 figured I would just be Mike. Didn’t work out that way–everyone around here including my wife calls me Col. mike.:D
in reply to: Anyone eat coyote? #63642Just returned from the dog yard where I asked the ?– 18 husky’s looked at me and growled–eat what? They then said “ask monk to come visit”– I then got a lecture on cannibalism and how society frowns on the practice.
