in reply to: Bison Gear Packs #10341
Bruce not to change the thread but your display of items prompted my thought that a light was missing or I missed it. Anyway check out this link.

When cleaning the kill or running dogs when you need a hands free lite this is the best we have found. We do use a larger one for night runs with large teams–leaders 63 feet in front of me or in blizzard conditions–but for what trad hunters need for after the kill it works. The red option is nice when needed. About the size of a large quarter on your head.

Trust you have practiced with it–not on airplanes–as I found out many years ago. Have actually used mine for enticing hawks and crows to ground try it. Mine comes from survival kit I was issued about 40 years ago. Oh yeah it makes a neat fire starter with dry tinder and sun.
in reply to: Bison Gear Packs #9161Nice to hear the great reviews as I just ordered the first trip explorer model a couple of weeks ago–it hasn’t arrived yet. Meet Angelo at ETAR and was impressed with his gear.
Likely I will now carry stuff that I will never use:D forgetting that Lakota mantra.
Bruce neat to see a signalling mirror in your pouch–I thought I was the only one that still carried one of those.
Will post a review when it arrives

in reply to: Acute target panic… How to cure? #63294Lots of good info here. Arne’s recommendation for “outside help” is indeed great advice. You can film yourself–but having a knowledgeable instructor can save much frustration, bad habits—worth the cost.

in reply to: Acute target panic… How to cure? #62508In the meantime, try to NOT worry about the shot itself until you are at full draw. There is no point to aiming until ready to shoot and that is full draw. You wouldn’t aim a gun before you load it would you?

I have hesitated to respond to this thread–but here goes.
Remember that all that follows is a career in shooting from 3000 meters to 2 meters. And lots of good advice here and the bow experts are so much better then I. But– There is no such thing as an unloaded gun–sorry Arne.
We aim with our eyes—first lesson in close combat qualification (CQB) Is look at your target point the hand and shoot..Look Look Look and shoot. The form required for pistol/rifle/bow is IMHO the same. Factor in the stress of a hunt or combat and pointing the hand wins.
But before we get to that point you have to work on YOUR form–up close to the target–when you get a consistent close group –extend the range. To get to the point where you don’t think about your form–requires about 2 hours of practice a day for 30 days.As an aside that’s how long it takes to make Marines march in step. Or a musher in training to harness and hook dogs to the gangline:D
To sum:
Perfect the form
Perfect the aim
Shoot to kill

Trust I didn’t upset anyone–but if your still undecided check out Fred A’s books.

check out this months AARP mag. Location in ID. that may meet your desires—albeit cold but that will diminish as we continue to heat the planet. I’m actually looking seriously at that area—when we can sell the business:D

You will hear from a lot more experts then me–just back in trad bow after 42 year lay off. But–after you research this site and then think about the $. Save yourself some time and more $ just buy the tuffheads. IMHO8)

in reply to: Furthest shot on game? #5663512 yards on MI white tail–10 point eastern count, 35lb Ben Pearson recurve. My uncle was insistent that you get close. That was in 1969 after some 4 decades I will be out there again this season with a long bow. 20 yards with .30-06 on barren ground caribou while stationed on Adak AK.
Longest shot on 2 leg prey–550 yards .30 cal. with iron sights–never could get used to them scopes:D enough said about that as I feel web mom hovering over the red key.
Point is–IMHO if you are not getting within the sensory range of your prey and ensuring the shot is going to make a clean ethical kill then your not hunting–your sniping and murdering. No offense just my opinion.8)

hehehe ColMike, My mother used to say to me ” You get so excited about hunting, I’d bet if there was a rock throwing season you boys would be out practicing”…
Sad thing is, she wasn’t wrong…
David–Yes got in a lot of trouble throwing rocks. Trad weapons– have you tried throwing sticks. Great fun and I have actually gotten a couple of grouse and doves with them.
