in reply to: New vids on woodsmanship, etc. #28843
Good catch Ben, I’ll get that fixed for the next one.
Mike, these will all be free on the BHA site and on youtube.
in reply to: New vids on woodsmanship, etc. #28663Cameron, I’ve got one made of polyester that I use for backpacking. It’s 12X12 and weighs next to nothing. I just cut stakes in the woods.

that stuff is vinal isn’t it? I saw where a guy made a swiming pool from an old billbord add. Recycling at it’s best:D
in reply to: 300 gr. blunts? #40270handirifle, that’s a find idea pressing a field tip into a drilled out blank. I’m gonna have to make some of those up.

in reply to: Sitka spruce and EFOC, failed experiment #39039why not use you aluminum footing as shown, but with a screw in adapter. It’d be like you just cut the end off an aluminum arrow and slipped it over your wood shaft. That’d fix any breaking problems between the tip and footing. Seems like I’d seen somewhere that you’d done that in the past.
in reply to: 2013 hunting rigs #38929I’m a little late jumping into this thread. Been busy whittlin’. I recently finished my 2013 bow. I’d been shooting 62lbs@28 but decided to drop down in weight. This one’s 52@28 but I’m drawing a little farther. It’s probably pulling 54 or so at 29. My 75lb shafts are showing a little stiff even with 260 gr up front. Just ordered some 300 gr. tuffheads and field tips which should fix that. This bow is cut nearly to center in the shelf. shoots sweet with a high foc arrow. In the first pick the bottom limb looks a little weak but it’s just the camera angle. Can’t wait till opener..

in reply to: Making flemish twist strings #43728in reply to: cracked limb? let's patch it #37714AlexBugnon wrote: Hi Clay
Have you ever posted a video on exactly how to repair a twisted self bow limb?
I haven’t. Some of my bows have twisted limbs, which started with a twisted stave. If I tried to “fix” it now, after the bow was finished, it would throw everything out of line i.e., the nocks wouldn’t line up with the center of the handle.
I recently started a bow from a stave with a little bit of twist. I may try to take the twist our just for the heck of it. I’ll shoot some footage if i do. But this wouldn’t help with taking the propeller twist out of a finished bow.

I know what you’re talking about. I think that has more to do with how the hide was dried than anything. You can stretch a hide really wide, which will shorten the length, or the other way around. It it’s dried stretched one way, It’ll stretch more in the other when it’s re-wet. This really becomes apparent when working with buckskin/brain tanning.
good tip on Torges site.

Well thanks Dave, on all counts. I’ve built my first “real” bow while I was still in high school, nearly 15 years ago. I’d always been interested in it, and tried but failed many times until finding the Traditional Bowyers Bible – Vol1. After that, I just kept on making. Sold my wheeled contraption and never looked back. Aside from that, I’ve always been artsie and mechanicaly inclined, which doesn’t hurt.
BTW, the bow you have isn’t the one from the video series. We did a still photo build along on this forum way back when it first started. That’s your bow…
in reply to: Backyard grizzly attack! #29361Well, that bear’s gonna figure out where those treats are coming from one day. That dude better stash’em in a safer place or he’s gonna be speakin in a little higher pitch, if ya know what I mean…
in reply to: Red Cedar Shafts ? #26253I’ve never used western red cedar. I’ve tried eastern, though it’s not related (different genus) and, as Troy says, it didn’t spine out at all. Very lite. I’d guess WRC is going to be pretty soft and low spine as well.

No, I’m not counting the days or anything…
Holy crap, I just realized it’s only 3 months away. Elk for me. I won’t make it out till the 3rd week though. 10 days straight after that. I shouldn’t even have opened this thread. Now I’m gonna be thinkin about it. Make the time go slower.
in reply to: Question for Clay, et al #25904I just use poly. It seals everything up nice. The only thing you’ll need to watch is that the edges of the skin are glued down well. snake skin backings tend to lift at the edges if you don’t pay special attention.
