in reply to: Start them young #52542

That is very cool! It is a privilege to pour our lives into our children. Enjoy every minute Jim…My youngest is 19 now and we were at a Men’s Retreat with our church last weekend. We got an unexpected blessing of snow which we need in our area. Friday night we were heading back to our cabin and my son said I think I will sleep out in my hammock tonight. It was snowing very hard at that moment and supposed to keep snowing all night. I thought to myself – that’s my boy always looking for an adventure. Here is what we woke up to the next morning…

One day your boy will be pushing you…

I have been curious about the thumb ring – would there be any advantage to using a thumb ring with todays modern longbows? I am tempted to pick one up and experiment.

My son and I went out to a buddy’s place to shoot at our 3D deer…we had a hard time breaking up a new friendship. We would chase her away and get a few shots off and before long she would be back for more…

in reply to: What bow to buy #63446

I started off with a Fred Bear Montana Longbow and really enjoyed it. The price was right and it was very durable.

Here is my red dot attempt at 60 yards.

Oh well I tried to post a video – it worked once and then went all white.

Kingwouldbe – thanks for sharing great pics and story. I just returned yesterday from a two day scouting trip with my youngest son whose name happens to be Caleb as well. I showed him your pics and read him your story. My son is 19 and loves longbows as I do and hunting together is the best. We were scouting for Turkeys and found them – which is tough in our part of California on public land. We jumped a huge Bobcat, listened to the Coyotes cry out all around us at night and had a long-distance pinecone shooting competition. These are days I will remember for the rest of my life.

I extend my welcome as well. You will find that in addition to the great content and learning here – you will meet great people. I find myself much more at home with the Traditional family.

I also have the Masters of the Barebow videos and they deal with the gap shooting method with enough detail to get someone started if a person wanted to give it a fair evaluation of shooting style.

I use D-97 on all my bows. It has actually been my experience that the D-97 is a bit quieter than B-50. It may be a hearing issue but even when I have someone else shoot my bow and I stand to the side and listen it is dead quiet with the D-97.

I know that there are other factors that help quiet a bow. I do shoot a very heavy arrow as well.

I think a build along or some pics of the process would really be interesting. I want to know how to make a string from a plant. That is a necessary survival skill…

Dave – I wish our town had a history that was connected to the…Clovis. I will do some further research to see if there is a connection but to my knowledge our town name came from one of the founders of the city by the Name of Clovis Cole. I went back to verify that as best I could right now. I was not aware of the Clovis point, that I assume you are referring to. I quickly did a search and found some info on the Smithsonian.com site.

Clovis is about 2 hours from the closest coastline which is Pismo beach or the Cambria area.

I am now curious to know more about the Clovis point…

Rich – here is the string ready to come your way…bear in mind I am not a professional string maker. I just twist some for myself and for some bows I build. It is B-50 – I served the string but you will need to place your own nock. Enjoy.
