Merino is great. Australian Merino is the ducks nuts 😉 This is the particular brand I’ve used a lot of:
in reply to: Practice for Form #17218I got the same idea from Arne Moe’s youtube videos. It’s a really handy training aid.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #17210Ralph, great photos mate. Even though the plants and animals are different, I always get the impression I’d feel quite at home in your Texas countryside.

Ralph, mom was sitting watching and LAUGHED when it came down and clunked him in the cheek! I think she snorted “Good shot!” before she realised he was crying.. so somehow I ended up the good guy! In marriage, I find it’s the little victories that count most 😉

And quick he was! I took the photo before saying ‘stop’, which is where I went wrong. The arrow went straight up, hit the gutter and came straight back down, nock first into his inquiring little face.
I actually thought it hit him right in the eye. It is that time of year!
in reply to: studying elk #15423John,
I’ve got a copy of Racks and reckon it’s a great book. BHA also did a little 3 part blog on Elk Hunting Tips, here’s the links if you haven’t read them already:
http://www.backcountryhunters.org/index.php/backcountry-blog/748-diy-elk-hunting-tips-part-1
http://www.backcountryhunters.org/index.php/backcountry-blog/749-diy-elk-hunting-tips-part-2
http://www.backcountryhunters.org/index.php/backcountry-blog/750-diy-elk-hunting-tips-part-3
Between Racks and that BHA blog you’ve got about everything I know about elk, which is to say nothing first hand. Hopefully some of the experienced elk hunters that haunt the forum will drop in with some reading tips 😀
in reply to: GPS Suggestions #13355handirifle wrote: Having a GPS and that radio, you could give coordinates and have rescue come right to you, instead of searching a 40 sq mile area.
I used a hand held VHF with built in GPS that was neat, for just that reason. The GPS would only give you a current location, but for emergency calls it was perfect. I think it was an Icom.. worth about $500 though 😕
in reply to: New Bow!!!! #13345That’s a lot of bow for under 300 bucks!
in reply to: Recurve vs Longbow #13327Hey mate, I just did a little googling and found at 10gpp the Hoyt getting around 180fps and the Martin getting about 160fps.
I wouldn’t worry too much about that speed difference and focus on the one you shoot more comfortably and consistently.

I would imagine in AZ, just like here, lots of streams just kind of peter out into the dry ground. Quite a few early european explorers followed promising streams to dehydrated doom 😯
in reply to: Longbow shot while sitting #13010I’m pretty sure H Hill said he would just about lay his bow flat like that for short shots. And in my little experience, sitting with your back against a tree is one of the best ways to see things in the woods (as long as you can resist dozing off.. not one of my strong points). So shooting a bow like that while sitting seems a perfectly natural, and wonderful way to send an arrow 😉
in reply to: Kayak hunt fail.. #11211So last year I paddled around a different island up here, Hinchinbrook, which was spectacular (amongst all the natural wonders there is an American B24 that crash landed on one of the peaks in ’42 and a 5 star eco resort that was abandoned about 3 years ago.. its like Jurassic Park, sans dinosaurs). Anyway, I’ve complained I didn’t see any crocs. This story came up today about a couple of fly fishermen that got followed around by a big bull croc. If I ran into that fella in my kayak, I’m not sure I’d be around to complain about it…

I never got to where you were, but I did some flyfishing for barra closer to shore. As I said when I returned from my first visit, if I were 20 years younger my next ticket would be one-way! Don
Don, one of your books came up in a conversation with another bowhunter I met here last year and he had a photo of you at my local club from about 10-15 years ago I think, doing a book signing. It is a small world.

Our Nautiraid double is ready. With your power up front and my brains in the back seat-and I’m only 67–how about around Cape Horn. And just to keep us on thread we can take our two piece elkhearts for some bow fishing:lol:
Mike, I’d be on board in a second! If only I hadn’t just committed the next 2 years of my life away to 6 day working weeks haha 😕
